The Internet Matlocks are at it again, this time digging around the files for the PC version of 2K Boston's BioShock (maybe you've heard of it). The discovery? References to "new" Plasmids and downloadable content.

Found in the "manual.ini" file, the "Downloadable content anouncement" of something called "Plasmid Pack 1" reveals the following message:

NEW FROM RYAN INDUSTRIES!
Having concluded clinical trials on four new Genetic improvements, Ryan Industries is proud to announce the general release of their newest products:

Machine Buster
Vending Expert
Sonic Boom
EVE Saver

Look for them at a Gatherer's Garden near you!

While it's unknown whether or not these Plasmids will be part of a free DLC pack or something more sinister (like you having to open up your wallet), it's obvious that the content is there. But what would be new Plasmids be worth to you? How many Little Sisters would you harvest, and how many American dollars would you spend?

It frustrates me that the content is already on the disc and we need to buy an unlock key. Why do developers hold out on us and pretend they made something new instead of actually adding to their product?

They'll get a big fat amount of Zero pesetas/euros/rupees/yorloks from me.
Give me ONE reason why I should pay for that? It's akin to making me pay for the ice arrows in Ocarina of time.
I swear I need to punch something fluffy now....

While I love my Bioshocks, this is bullshit. You KNOW they aren't going to be free, not with Microsoft's nickel-and-dime success recently. 4 new plasmids? Why? I've already beaten the game, twice. What is the point of going back and playing it AGAIN just so you can use 4 more plasmids?

Sweet more plasmids for a game that I only used about 3 plasmids....no thanks.

It ain't up to Microsoft whether or not this will cost us.
The publisher decides that, so it'll be Take-Two taking all the flak.

It might just be some left overs. In one of the early walkthroughs of the game they had a speed boost plasmid. Of course, I could easily see them touching these leftovers up and selling them for 400 Microsoft Points.

I'd like to think that they thought these plasmids rather superfluous to overall game experience so left them out of the final game but still in the code so they could be unlocked once the first month buyers all well and truly done with the game but could then go back and have some fun have some fun with some new shit.

That was an appalling first sentence by the way.

As long as they don't charge me for this shit I'm fine. I'll quite happily pay 800 of my Microsoft points for a new level or two though. (If you are reading 2K, how about a new character present when a lot of the shit started going down, that big daddy I keep seeing pictures of and a few new plasmids/tonics that are useful)

sLife: not true. Epic wanted to release the Hidden Fronts map pack for Gears free but Microsoft forced them to charge for it initially only allowing them to distribute it free after a couple of months.

True that, and overlooked by me.

How much autonomy do publishers have when putting stuff up on Live then? Microsoft hosts all that stuff so they must have some say in what happens surely.

I would pay 2 bits for Bioshock even whores deserve that much and Microsoft games are becoming the 2 bit whores of the PC world. Or would that be 8 bit on a PC? Anyway I agree with that other guy that agreed with that other guy already above me.

@m3ds
Don't you mean the Sportsboost one? Pretty sure it does that, I had two of those equipped (lvl 1 and 2), used it with 2 ice fields (lvl 1 and 2) to take down a Bouncer with just a wrench.

Wouldn't pay two cents for 4 plasmids, 4 levels though? I would pay for that.

People need to read the links. There is a LOT more than just 4 plasmids. There's an entire AI group that's not implimented into the game that looks like it can be unlocked. There are 'drones' that seem like mobile cameras. There's an entire tonic track that lets you control them, or hack them, or make them friendly, etc. Those 4 plasmids are only a few of the plasmids found that aren't in the game already. Some others include ElectroBoltZero, Telekenisis 2, 3 levels of drain life, and revival.

Is this really necessary at all? At what point do we draw the line and say "this game is near perfect, we don't need to update it?" I know I might incur the wrath of Rev. Anthony for saying this, but when they finished a film like The Godfather, did they go and offer "additional content" for the already finished product?* If you're making art, make it your statement. Don't keep evolving your statement over and over again.

*Yes, I realize that films are very different than games, but they are still part of the "art circle," and that's how I'm using them in this example.

Maybe they can put that on DLC.

I already played through the game twice and got all 1000 achievement points for the 360 version. Why do I need this DLC? This amazing game is just going to be put on the display shelf for now. I'm done with it.

It would need to be quite a bit more content than just a few new plasmids to make me actually pay anything for it.

You make a good point, but I don't think there's much of a comparison. While BioShock is artistically on-par with, and superior to, many Hollywood movies, they're still different types of art. (That's not to say that one is superior or inferior, though.) A movie, by its nature is a statement. It's there, it happens, and then it's done. Games are much more flexible, allowing for more content and possibilities. Some even come with multiple endings built right in. In other words, the content can and does change, due to their very interactive nature.

It's a bad thing when George Lucas goes back into the original Star Wars trilogy and starts removing actors and replacing them with new ones, or changes the entire tone and meaning of scenes. It's not so bad when CliffyB, for example, drops a new boss fight into the PC version of Gears. (Sorry, I couldn't come up with a better single-player example of updated content.) Does that make sense?

Personally, I'm all for downloadable content, so long as they don't charge me an arm and a leg.

Please be free, please be free, please be free, please be free, please be free...

my only logic is that since they are no multiplayer servers to maintain, they can get away with a free upgrade.

But I won't hold my breath...

There are a bunch of .swf files in the BioShock directory. These appear to be ShockwaveFiles. I expect that you could run them through a decompiler and learn some stuff.

If these were included in say a new expansion pack (say they did an expansion along the lines of the Half Life expansions with you taking the role of another character at the same time as the main protaganist), with entirely new levels etc, that would be the only case whereby I would buy them. There's no point buying new content for a single player game I've beaten unless there's new levels to conquer.

bioshock is awesome. loved it. it was all about the atmosphere for me. but everything else was kinda eh. 75% of plasmids/tonics you dont use or need. they could have added more metroid type exploration. like using fire to melt an ice covered door (yeah i know you dodo that)or ice to put out fires more stuff like that. i noticed some breakable walls ,like 3 and one leads to a wall behind it. more hidden stuff would be nice. or a high jump plasmid to get to areas unexplored. or different hack games for the different bots. 1 for turret, 1 for cameras, 1 for bots. etc. so much more could have been added to this game. rapture looks so much bigger when you look out the windows but you never get to see those places.

Not to pee in anyone's Cherios, but that could just be leftover code laying around. Levine said there were several plasmids that didn't make the cut. Perhaps someone was just too lazy to cleanup?

But hey, "..believe everything and you'll be right. Half the time". =)
