The Internet Matlocks are at it again, this time digging around the files for the PC version of 2K Boston's BioShock (maybe you've heard of it). The discovery? References to "new" Plasmids and downloadable content.
Found in the "manual.ini" file, the "Downloadable content anouncement" of something called "Plasmid Pack 1" reveals the following message:
NEW FROM RYAN INDUSTRIES!
Having concluded clinical trials on four new Genetic improvements, Ryan Industries is proud to announce the general release of their newest products:
Machine Buster
Vending Expert
Sonic Boom
EVE Saver
Look for them at a Gatherer's Garden near you!
While it's unknown whether or not these Plasmids will be part of a free DLC pack or something more sinister (like you having to open up your wallet), it's obvious that the content is there. But what would be new Plasmids be worth to you? How many Little Sisters would you harvest, and how many American dollars would you spend?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Sonic Boom?
I lol'd
Give me ONE reason why I should pay for that? It's akin to making me pay for the ice arrows in Ocarina of time.
I swear I need to punch something fluffy now....
It ain't up to Microsoft whether or not this will cost us.
The publisher decides that, so it'll be Take-Two taking all the flak.
I'd like to think that they thought these plasmids rather superfluous to overall game experience so left them out of the final game but still in the code so they could be unlocked once the first month buyers all well and truly done with the game but could then go back and have some fun have some fun with some new shit.
That was an appalling first sentence by the way.
As long as they don't charge me for this shit I'm fine. I'll quite happily pay 800 of my Microsoft points for a new level or two though. (If you are reading 2K, how about a new character present when a lot of the shit started going down, that big daddy I keep seeing pictures of and a few new plasmids/tonics that are useful)
That's because Microsoft Game Studios published Gears of War
How much autonomy do publishers have when putting stuff up on Live then? Microsoft hosts all that stuff so they must have some say in what happens surely.
Epic Win.
@m3ds
Don't you mean the Sportsboost one? Pretty sure it does that, I had two of those equipped (lvl 1 and 2), used it with 2 ice fields (lvl 1 and 2) to take down a Bouncer with just a wrench.
Wouldn't pay two cents for 4 plasmids, 4 levels though? I would pay for that.
*Yes, I realize that films are very different than games, but they are still part of the "art circle," and that's how I'm using them in this example.
Don't quite see the point if it's money demanding.
Maybe they can put that on DLC.
You make a good point, but I don't think there's much of a comparison. While BioShock is artistically on-par with, and superior to, many Hollywood movies, they're still different types of art. (That's not to say that one is superior or inferior, though.) A movie, by its nature is a statement. It's there, it happens, and then it's done. Games are much more flexible, allowing for more content and possibilities. Some even come with multiple endings built right in. In other words, the content can and does change, due to their very interactive nature.
It's a bad thing when George Lucas goes back into the original Star Wars trilogy and starts removing actors and replacing them with new ones, or changes the entire tone and meaning of scenes. It's not so bad when CliffyB, for example, drops a new boss fight into the PC version of Gears. (Sorry, I couldn't come up with a better single-player example of updated content.) Does that make sense?
Personally, I'm all for downloadable content, so long as they don't charge me an arm and a leg.
my only logic is that since they are no multiplayer servers to maintain, they can get away with a free upgrade.
But I won't hold my breath...
If they ask more from me after I bought their game first hand! Screw them. GAME WAS AWESOME. BUT NOT WORTH A DOWNLOAD. Sorry about anything but my first sentiment
