Quantcast

I thought I'd take a minute out of your time waiting for the launch of the Wii and PS3 to tell you a quick little story. I was talking with my dad yesterday about coming home for Thanksgiving and all that, and I mention that I'm going to be waiting for a Wii at launch, and so he should expect to see a $400 or so purchase on the credit card (I have nowhere to cash my paychecks around here, so I have to do it when I go home). He suddenly perks up in the conversation.

Him: "You're bringing it home, right?"

Me: "Yeah...why, you want to play it?"

Him: "Oh yeah. It has a motion sensitive controller, so you can play things like golf on it, right? I really want to try that out."

Now, my dad is not a gamer. He's in the finance department for a large insurance company. He usually plays FreeCell on the computer, and he played games with me once in a blue moon when I was real little. Now, he was honestly interested in playing with the Wii, without any joking suggestions from me. Unfortunately, I won't be able to bring the Wii with me for Thanksgiving break, due to me only bringing a carry-on, but he'll get to play with the Wii all during Winter break. Any of you dtoid readers have your parents say something like this?

Anyways, you may now return to your regularly scheduled Destructoid. Or Japanator, too . I know you all want to read it.

When I was a wee tyke, my Dad brought the Atari 2600 into the house. He was the total king of Space Invaders (real old school). For years Dad wouldn't touch the new consoles..they were too difficult, fast moving, confusing....but he is psyched to try out the Wii. He's impressed that itlooks so fun with the motion sensing and sense of fun. I'm looking forward to playing some Wii sports with the old man this weekend and beyond.

My parents never said that. My mom plays mahjong and such, but that's about it. My dad used to play Othello with me on the NES, but he was way too good at that game at the time. I live a long distance away and I doubt that I'll be seeing them at Christmas. I will see them at the end of this month, though. I'll see if I can get him interested in Golf or Tennis or something.

I think my parents are more excited about the Wii launch then I am... As far as I know they're gonna be standing in a line waiting for one just like me.

PS: My dad (a 55 year old man) is legendary at Turok and Turok2 and he really wants Acclaim to make a new Turok game for the Wii. I agree with him on that.

Not bringing it home with you for Thanksgiving because you're only bringing one carry on? That's no excuse. I took a week long trip to Dallas once, brought one carry on, and it was enough to fit my GameCube, a few games, all the cables, a controller, and still have room for what clothes I'd need. Considering the Wii's even smaller than the 'Cube, this shouldn't be an issue.

Well, it's either the Wii or my laptop. And I don't want to have to write Friday Robot Intermission for Japanator on the Wii. That'd be hell.

I'm really excited for the Wii in that its the first time I'll be playing with my mom and dad (outside of the odd round of Hot Shots) since our Colecovision.
