We've been watching the Xbox 360 Hard Drive situation. After that Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle came out, we were sure a 205GB separate drive would be released. But it didn't come. Later, Aaron Greenberg gave us a bit of hope for one. Last week, Xbox Japan announced that they would get the 250GB drive for over $170. Now here's one more sign pointing in that direction: a price drop on the 120GB.
While the 250GB is not confirmed for Europe, a price drop of the 120GB is. It goes down from £99.99 to £79.99 while supplies last, which may indicate that MS is making shelf space for larger drives.
This quote is less encouraging:
Microsoft is now offering a standalone 250GB hard drive in Japan to provide consumers in Japan more storage options for their games and entertainment," a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer. "We work closely with retailers to determine the best approach for our products on a region-by-region basis."
Still, I think it's coming. I just hope it's priced for one on a blogger's salary.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Gotta get me one of those.
But if anyone actually thought the 250GB wasn't coming standalone, well, they don't know Microsoft that well.
Wasn't a similar statement made about the 120GB's when they came out? Regardless, MS would be smart to release these to market since their competition is offering a 250 GB standard now. I managed to grab the MW bundle, so I'm good for space.
Microsoft's pricing is fucking insulting.
Oooh, that's right! I forgot, you're a tool. You make an entire platform look embarrassing, despite its qualities. And I'm certainly not talking about the Xbox.
I'm not saying that 360 HDDs (with custom enclosures) should cost exactly the same as internal PC HDDs, considering those are sold close to cost and on-sale/clearance isn't the same as MSRP, but I imagine these fuckers have close to a 60% profit margin, and that seems excessive when their purpose is to let you buy more things on marketplace.
Then again, it's the market (i.e. buyers) that allows this pricing...the stupid, stupid market.
why bother buying a 250gb hardrive for $170 when you could buy a brand new console for $300.
Microsoft is being retarded. I have all three current gen systems, so my points are vaild and not fanboy related. Its just ridiculous that microsoft wants you topay so much for a proprietary hdd
Either way I desperately need to replace my two 20gb harddrives...
"I have all three current gen systems, so my points are vaild and not fanboy related."
I don't disagree with you, but that is the worst reasoning I have ever seen. Just say what you're saying without a disclaimer. You shouldn't be on the defensive, you're stating your opinion, and one most people (myself included) would agree with anyway.
I'll stick with my 120Gb.
£50
A 360 HDD you buy, slap in, and use.
A PC HDD you research, try to find a good price, buy an extra SATA cable, open your case, find an open power cable, find an open 3.5" bay, screw it in, connect everything, format, and (possibly) install an OS.
Are the prices too high? YES. Should they be 1:1 with regular HDD prices? NO.
MS should have gone the Sony route of having a laptop HDD bay instead of their proprietary system.
cause i just bought Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
for 100 USD hmmm huurr lol@consolepeasents.com
You can't use a custom HDD if you connect the unit to Live, you'll get console banned in hours. I use it on my not-so-legal 360, and have my games backed up on it.
A cheaper option for people of a less criminal nature would be to get a 360 HDD transfer cable for like £12, and back stuff up on your PC.
Haha! You're so right! I totally should have bought a brand new 360 for no fucking reason when I could just go and pick up a preowned harddrive on the cheap.
You're evidently so much much smarter than us all! Congratulations!
