Int'l Xbox 360 Hard Drive Watch 2010: EU cuts 120GB price photo

We've been watching the Xbox 360 Hard Drive situation. After that Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle came out, we were sure a 205GB separate drive would be released. But it didn't come. Later, Aaron Greenberg gave us a bit of hope for one. Last week, Xbox Japan announced that they would get the 250GB drive for over $170. Now here's one more sign pointing in that direction: a price drop on the 120GB.

While the 250GB is not confirmed for Europe, a price drop of the 120GB is. It goes down from £99.99 to £79.99 while supplies last, which may indicate that MS is making shelf space for larger drives.

This quote is less encouraging:

Microsoft is now offering a standalone 250GB hard drive in Japan to provide consumers in Japan more storage options for their games and entertainment," a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer. "We work closely with retailers to determine the best approach for our products on a region-by-region basis."

Still, I think it's coming. I just hope it's priced for one on a blogger's salary.

A 205GB HDD?

Gotta get me one of those.

But if anyone actually thought the 250GB wasn't coming standalone, well, they don't know Microsoft that well.

Wasn't a similar statement made about the 120GB's when they came out? Regardless, MS would be smart to release these to market since their competition is offering a 250 GB standard now. I managed to grab the MW bundle, so I'm good for space.

Ughhh. I've been at 1GB or so of space left on my launch-20GB. Having to delete DLC to make room for newer DLC is getting tiresome.

@Carlton Banks: I am, actually, I didn't know the PS3 was $170. Fail troll is fail.

170$ for a 250gb is crazy anyway, it's almost as expensive as the console itself.

I can get a 1.5 Terabyte harddrive for my pc, for less than £100.
Microsoft's pricing is fucking insulting.

Me too Carlton! I'd like to buy a $170 PS3, because that would be a really good price and I could supplement my launch 60 GB PS3. Oh wait, they're not that price?

Oooh, that's right! I forgot, you're a tool. You make an entire platform look embarrassing, despite its qualities. And I'm certainly not talking about the Xbox.

Back on topic: This pricing is idiotic, and borders on abusive. People should stop buying them at this price.

I'm not saying that 360 HDDs (with custom enclosures) should cost exactly the same as internal PC HDDs, considering those are sold close to cost and on-sale/clearance isn't the same as MSRP, but I imagine these fuckers have close to a 60% profit margin, and that seems excessive when their purpose is to let you buy more things on marketplace.

Then again, it's the market (i.e. buyers) that allows this pricing...the stupid, stupid market.

carlton has a point.

why bother buying a 250gb hardrive for $170 when you could buy a brand new console for $300.

Microsoft is being retarded. I have all three current gen systems, so my points are vaild and not fanboy related. Its just ridiculous that microsoft wants you topay so much for a proprietary hdd

Looks like I'll be picking up a couple of 120gb harddrives instead. They should be at an acceptable price level second hand now.

Either way I desperately need to replace my two 20gb harddrives...

I don't disagree with you, but that is the worst reasoning I have ever seen. Just say what you're saying without a disclaimer. You shouldn't be on the defensive, you're stating your opinion, and one most people (myself included) would agree with anyway.

HDD's should be cheaper, with their Games on Demand service downloads averaging 6-8Gb without any DLC, it would benefit them to offer HDD's at a better price.

I'll stick with my 120Gb.

As I say every time... yes, the HDD's are too expensive, but comparing them directly to OEM HDD's is just fucking stupid.

A 360 HDD you buy, slap in, and use.
A PC HDD you research, try to find a good price, buy an extra SATA cable, open your case, find an open power cable, find an open 3.5" bay, screw it in, connect everything, format, and (possibly) install an OS.

Are the prices too high? YES. Should they be 1:1 with regular HDD prices? NO.

MS should have gone the Sony route of having a laptop HDD bay instead of their proprietary system.

@Konrad9 or maybe just sell the appropriate enclosure for $40 bucks or whatever they deem appropriate so one can put the right size drive that they need into it.

I've opened up my xbox hdd, and honestly, the only thing the have in there is a conversion cable to make it work with the xbox hdd interface. I'm surprised the hacking community hasn't made tutorials to upgrade to the 250GB hdd with your own hard drive, unless of has not found a comparable model yet. Had they?

My 10GB harddrive will not be enough when I finally get my 360 online. Could they drop the price of the wireless adapter while they're at it????

In defense of Carlton, I'm getting a PS3 Slim for only $160. But that's only because my 60gb YLOD'd on me, and so when I went to the PS site to file a claim to get it fixed, they offered me a trade, so I send them my now dead fat PS3, and I get a new 120gb Slim for $119 + tax & shipping = $160. Not sure how long it lasts, though.

@Enossir I don't know if I would go so far as to call them "people" more like suckers. Granted I only have a 350gb Hard Drive for my PS3 (original 60G), I can only shake my head at this when people even consider it. You could have saved 50 bucks and got 3x or more space.

@ greks224

You can't use a custom HDD if you connect the unit to Live, you'll get console banned in hours. I use it on my not-so-legal 360, and have my games backed up on it.

A cheaper option for people of a less criminal nature would be to get a 360 HDD transfer cable for like £12, and back stuff up on your PC.

Ok, the vitriol in my last post was probably uncalled for, and for that I apologise, but seriously - don't act like such a douche. Congratulations on having a 250gb 360 'n'all but personally I didn't see the point in upgrading just for extra space.

I really hate my 20GB HDD more each day. I'm playing through ME2, and the load times kill me. I need me a bigger HDD, and 60GB would be enough for me, but 120 would be nice. For the 360 though, I feel 250 is too much.

$150 for the 120 was needed in my case. I have 18GB worth of Rock Band content alone. I have a 40GB PS3 and that seems fine for my purposes as I really only have console exclusives and Tekken 6 for it.

I so want that. At least a 60gb HDD. 20GB HDD is the suck. U cant even have a full Install + DLC of Mass Effect 2. But i so do not want 80€ for a 60GB HDD if i could get me at least 1TB for that price.

I would definatly purchase one of the 250GB hard drives. And why buy a whole nother system instead of jus going ahead and buying the 250 hard drive! Maybe you dont need a whole nother system! lots of things that could be done with the 250 hard drive. www.gamegawkers.com
