InstantAction is closing, Torque in the clear for now photo

As announced today by Torque director Eric Preisz, InstantAction is closing down. It was an in-browser digital distribution outlet that allowed you to play full 3D games without having to immediately download them in their entirety.

"While we are shutting down the InstantAction.com website and Instant Jam game, Torquepowered.com will continue to operate while InstantAction explores opportunities with potential buyers for Torque," writes Preisz. "We thank all of our past and current customers for their support."

In a time where cloud gaming is becoming increasingly popular, and the competition is growing fiercer, it's sad to see a company go down like this. Let's hope they can find a suitable buyer for Torque.

This is actually pretty sad to hear. InstantJam impressed me at PAX, and the InstantAction guys seemed really enthusiastic about it. Hopefully the game will live on somehow.

Not surprised. THeir entire customer base is full of idiots looking for a make-game button.

I've used TGB and PSK, it's nice, but nobody to date has made anything close to compelling with it. Unless you consider shovelware on BigFish compelling.

Now, with UDK, why PAY anything (let alone the $800 price tag for Torque 3D) for a product with zero docs and zero support.

Yes, there is a $100 Binary Only version of T3D. And you can't do shit with it because to do anything useful with Torque 3D you need write it in C++. There is no way to override default engine behavior without doing so.

I'm not sure how a business with a product that only attracts Big Idea morons and cheapskates is attractive to anybody.

Wow uh, no, just no. I mean I saw this coming when they sold the company to investors, poured too many resources into an unfortunately marketless website (high end multiplayer only games + web portal do not go together), and got caught up in an arms race with technology most developers couldn't even use.

But still, to say nobody ever made anything worthwhile with the tech from the people that damn near invented modern indie gaming is just ignorant and stupid.
