[Editor's note: RJB talks about how he'll keep going back to Ninja Gaiden until he beats the game flawlessly for his Monthly Musing. -- CTZ]

Why would anyone subject themselves to this torture, time after time? Because I can.

I can finish Ninja Gaiden on NES. I can do it with no continues. I cannot, however, do it in one life. I almost made it, once, but I died against that bastard Jacquio.

And that's what keeps me coming back.

Ninja Gaiden is a series well known for its brutal difficulty. While the recent 360 title might have gone too far and relied on cheap tricks, like infinite staggers and juggles, to defeat you (a problem exacerbated by the ridiculous camera) the original Ninja Gaiden on NES relies purely on skill and timing to get through.

Obviously, there are some cheap moments, like birds that spawn mid jump and knock you to your death. But once you know they're there, or if your reflexes are fast enough, you can hit them the moment after they spawn and safely make your way through.

The most epic video game opening of all time...

Playing Ninja Gaiden isn't like playing a simple platformer. It's not a basic left-to-right action game. Ninja Gaiden needs to be played like a finely tuned instrument. You have to know each note, and hit it at exactly the right time.

Finishing the game takes less than an hour. If I've got an hour to kill before going out, I can fire it up and have it done before the girlfriend has her hair done. This is another one of the reasons I keep coming back. It's quick, but it's not easy, and it's always satisfying.

This is why I replay it, time after time. I want the perfect play through. Like pianists who play Bach without dropping a note, I want to play Ninja Gaiden without missing a life.

It is a matter of gaming pride that I do this (and hopefully record it). This isn't about Achievements or Trophies. Ninja Gaiden is from a time before such crass novelties. Ninja Gaiden is from a time when simply getting to the end was the feat, not unlocking all the points for an e-penis no one cares about.

Ninja Gaiden was from a time when finishing a game meant something, was something to be proud of, and finishing Ninja Gaiden was one of the greatest things you could do. Ninja Gaiden is from a time when gaming achievements were looked on with awe, not with derision and the label of being an "achievement whore", as if gaming pride can be shilled out by the console makers, a petty lure for the "hardcore" crowd.

Ninja Gaiden is beyond such pettiness. It is what it is, and you can take it or leave it.

And I can't leave it alone.

Ninja Gaiden has, for me, that perfect blend for replayability: Short, brutal, fun. And I will perfect it. I will play it until I do, and then, when I have bent Jacquio over and made him my bitch, I may finally put the game to rest.

But probably not, because after I do that, I know I will need the high score.

You get used to it...

P.S. Ninja Gaiden was actually called Shadow Warrior in Australia (as part of the PAL region) because ninjas are illegal in England.

You, sir, are a true gamer. Stories like this bring a tear to my 8-bit-loving eye. Ninja Gaiden is a fantastic game (although I'm partial to 2). I hope that you get that perfect run. *eyes Castlevania* Excuse me for a moment...

I love Ninja Gaiden to death. I lost the tape, but at some point in middle school my friends and I got together and actually played through 1 and 2 while recording all the cut scenes on VHS. I think the part where Earnest Hemmingway dies is still my favorite.

Wow I didn't know Shaddow Warrior was Ninja Gaiden, then I have played it when it was originally available :-)

The first Ninja Gaiden is one of the best games ever.

I recently played through Ninja Gaiden using many, many continues. The game is ridiculously hard, and for the wrong reasons. I would find myself dying mostly to the aforementioned "mid-jump spawn" birds, but also there were some points where a monster's spawn point may be directly on the edge of the screen, and the monster will spawn infinitely until you move forward. But you can't move forward, because you have an endless stream of 'roided out football players flying out onto the screen blocking your progress, sometimes knocking you back and triggering other spawns you already struggled to cross.

I'm sure it's all patterns, just like every other NES game out there. I can play through Megaman 2 with one life, but I'm just terrible at the Ninja Gaiden games. Every single one of them. The first brings out the worst in me, though.

Makes me feel like I'm eight years old again.

This year... I too have beat Ninja Gaiden 1, as well as 2. Its insane hard and reaaaaaally pissed me off when I died at a boss and had to go back like an entire level.
After beating it, I made sure to call everyone in the room to see I actually did it... yes I am that sad.

How in the hell can England outlaw ninjas? Blasphemy like that could get the Queen shuriken'd to death instantly.

Ninja Gaiden is, without a doubt, one of the hardest games I've ever played

I remember hearing horror stories about Ninja Gaiden as a young gamer and thinking the game made F-Zero look easy. Turns out, they're both big difficult pains in the ass.

I can't beat that boss at the top of tall mountain, not enough health to beat him.

I think it's easier killing a legion of real ninjas than it is to best Ninja Gaiden.

Well done sir, well done. A fine shout out to the darkness and a fine story to accompany it...

Not to sure on the legality of this (and if anyone wants to shout at me, meh, go for it) but website called www.nintendo8.com that emulates a bunch of games in Java. They dont have part one, but part two is bad enough :)

Own the original NES cart and the VC release since this is one of my favorite games of all time. Ninja Gaiden is actually pretty easy to beat without dying once you get everything down. For a while I would play through and beat it once a day (takes about 15 minutes or less if you don't die).

I bought this on my Wii and its a fucking awesome game... I just suck hardcore and can't beat the second level. I got to the boss once then died... ironically the only time I did that I was drunk.

So... what's your method to kill Jacqio and the demon. I'd imagine on a single life, you'd only have enough magic to kill one.

To kill Jacquio, I just save up my magic and use the Fire Wheel to fire up at him. To defeat the final boss, I just use the "hold down and jump while hammering attack for rapid fire sword swinging action" trick.

Also, front page!

This was the very first video game I ever owned, and is by far my favorite video game of all time.

My only regret is that I never beat the game...I could get to the final boss, but I would always choke on the home stretch, then the controllers would fly...

@nukka jdav, that happens to me every time I play mario party, when I drink with my buddies. we set a bunch of scores we can't touch the next day, all of us curious as to where our new records came from.

I hate it when I'm better at a game while I'm drunk. Still awesome though.

I have it on the VC. I'm kinda rusty, though. Still so awesome.
Good luck on beating it without dying. I've never done it, and I don't know if I could.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The original arcade Ninja Gaiden is superior to the NES games.

If you die or continue anywhere you get sent back to the beginning of the room/level, EXCEPT for the final boss. I can never beat him and I always get discouraged when I get sent back 2 levels.

The easiest way to beat the game is to get the jump and slash technique and hold onto it for every boss fight. They all go down in one shot. It's tricky to get there because you really have to watch out for flying enemies and you need to pick up the chi worth ten points, but not waste any magic on any other powerup. Once you know where things are, it's pretty easy though!

NG 1 and 2 for the NES are easily two of my favorite games ever. I still prefer 2 though.

NG2 for the 360, which I looked foward to for what, 4 fucking years? - was godamn glitch city. I didnt finish it because of disappearing godamn bosses.

Ninja Gaiden for the Master System was awesome too. It was a different game with slightly different mechanics and slightly more detailed graphics. Definitely worth a look for fans, given how cheap you can get that stuff.
