Insomniac: Super Mario Galaxy may have borrowed from us photo

In Kikizo's recent interview with Insomniac, Marketing Director Ryan Schneider said that he thinks Nintendo's upcoming Wii title Super Mario Galaxy may have borrowed a concept from an Insomniac game.

One that we're even extremely flattered by is Super Mario Galaxy, with their spherical worlds; we did spherical worlds in Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal. It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy. Granted, he's doing it in a different way, but it's still a spherical world, so it's flattering to see those sorts of things.

Schneider also brings up another PS2 game that "borrowed" from an Insomniac title, but this time he's a bit less complimentary, and he doesn't mention the title's name. He says that this one is  "more or less a direct rip-off of Ratchet and Clank."

The full interview on Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction covers the development of this PS3 title, the battle against casual games, and R&C's fancy in-game cutscenes.

[thanks, JV]

well, at least he wasn't a douchebag and said "HEY ITS OUR IDEA YOU BASTARDS!" Dude doesn't seem to be 100% sure Miyamoto borrowed from them and he's humble...i like.

There was a huge argument about this an gamespot. My thought is insomniac needs to shut the fuck up.

You know what they borrowed from Mario? THE THIRD DIMENSION!

oh and look, they "borrowed" spherical worlds from Yoshi's island

Seriously insomniac needs to get their shit straight, with out mario 64 there would be no R&C, they shouldn't even think that they're such big shit that Mario would copy them.

I found the spherical worlds in Ratchet and Clank 2/3 to be the weakest parts of the games. Also, from what I have seen from the Galaxy videos, they function quite differently.

Also, covah's post.

Insomniac are idiots.

Shigeru did not steal from them.

Also Jak & Daxter 1 is better than the entire Ratchet series (even though the other Jak games sucked ass).

Fin.

It seems ridiculous that he would say something like that. It'd be like John Romero saying something like "Yeah, it seems like Cliffy B and the boys at Epic borrowed our idea of using a chainsaw as a weapon. It's really flattering to think that it made such an impact on them."

Or like, HEY THEY USED SQUARES AND WE USED SQUARES THEY MUST HAVE GOTTEN THE IDEA OF GEOMETRIC SHAPES FROM US!

Yes, as was said,, we need look NO FURTHER than with our dear friend, Sonic the Hedgehog to see a MUCH earlier use of "sperical worlds."

And the developer MAY be putting it in the hypothetical, but honestly, it still sounds like he's being a douche. I can't imagine that Nintendo played Ratchet and Clank and said, "Hey, let's design an entire GAME CONCEPT from some of the worst levels in THESE games!"

And this, 'Stealing concepts from other games' bitching is getting old. EVERY game made is it's own take on previous games' mechanics. The best games end up being made by people putting their own spin on other's ideas and fine tuning it further.

Is Halo the first FPS? Not even close. Is it probably the most widely KNOWN FPS at this point? I'd guess so.

If Mario Galaxy is guilty of taking an idea, it's from "Le Petit Prince"(The Little Prince). A well known classic French kid's story where the protagonist goes to a bunch of little planetoids and interacts with a character that lives on it. The author himself drew the illustrations and all the worlds where little bigger then the protagonist himself.

But he did jump and 'fly' from little planet to little planet in a very Mario-Galazy sort of way.

And that story was written ages ago when the NES would have been considered sci-fi(1943).

A nice summary of the story here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Prince

(I see in the bullet points someone already made the correlation with Mario Galaxy)

We had to read the story for school way back(that's what French schoolin' does to ya).

Riser Glen's Avatar

Well, there needs to be some clarification here. He's not claiming anything negative such as stealing, he's claiming that they may have been a factor in the inspiration of Galaxy.

But, I still find that to be a bit far-fetched, seeing how the concept isn't really new. That plus the planets seem to be a large factor in the gameplay. And if they are, that would mean that the games premise was developed under the inspiration of Ratchet and Clanks sphere-levels.

realyst at 10/06/2007 11:49
But Riser, again, I point to Le Petit Prince. And it's just the kind of storybook Miyamoto would have stashed under his pillow.

From Ryan as Insomniac:

Hey peeps. This topic has touched a nerve! Figured I'd jump in and settle the question of what I really meant on the Super Mario Galaxy question. (Wish I could have been more articulate.) First, and more important, I can tell you that we're going to be running at a solid 60 fps in R&C Future. We've been consistent with saying that in interviews and on our podcast once we were able to confirm 60. When I commented about 40-50fps, we were still optimizing. We've gone gold since this interview was taped, and everyone should be pleased to know our framerate is as consistent as past R&C games.

Second, regarding the Galaxy comment. I have no idea whether anyone on the Galaxy team looked at past R&C games and was inspired by our spherical worlds. It would be flattering to think so, as we're all HUGE fans of Miyamoto-san and of all his games. Maybe that's just wishful thinking :) I'm sure it's safe to say that our team has been inspired by a huge variety of Nintendo games, including Mario! Bottom line: If you know Insomniac, then you know the last thing we're interested in is chest-thumping...that's *not* our thing. Ted wouldn't stand for it, trust me.

Hope this helps clarify things. Thanks though for reading the article...man, I look freakin' tired in the photos and like I need to eat more!

Take care, guys. Hope you check out our new podcast when we go live tomorrow...kick-ass Mystery Guest that just wrapped up a very kick-ass public beta.

Why does the fact that Super Mario Galaxy has spherical worlds mean that Miyamoto-san played Going Commando or Up Your Arsenal?

I mean its great that they did not come out and say "Galaxy obviously stole from us," but what they did say is not much better.
