Insomniac loves sequels, so it should MARRY them photo

Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price has been sharing his appreciation for the most well trodden of videogame ground, the ever-present sequel. Price declares that sequels allow developers to "hit the ground running," making for better games by cutting out all the preliminary fuss associated with a fresh IP.

"Developers can hit the ground running with sequels. The game’s story and art style have a solid base, the tech and tools are stable and the basic gameplay mechanics have gone through plenty of tuning in the first game.

It’s certainly a liberating experience when you’re no longer arguing over the main character’s name, or waiting for basic systems to be implemented.

The end result is usually a game that’s bigger, more polished and has more innovative features than the original game."

I always found it funny how, with movies, the general rule is that a sequel invariably ends up inferior to what came before, but with games, sequels tend to be better. This goes some way to explaining that, I suppose. Developers spend too much time arguing about character names to make a good game the first time around ...

confirmed!

@solidgoomba Like Rainbow Six or most Ubisoft games? I know were not talking about this but they need to do something with Nathan Hale he is just not cool enough. I think some people brought it up on GT.com and it's true he has no hook or catch to him that makes him cool. He's just got this retroaids thing going on and I'm not to sure how cool that is.

Just look at the difference between Turok and Turok 2. Perfect example.

Translation: We don't have to work as hard with sequels.

2.2gigs for a damn beta....

I think it would have been pretty easy to say that sequels are easier to do than creating a whole new game.

I haven't found this to be the case with the R&C sequels. I definitely thought the first one was better designed and more enjoyable than the rest. Also they needed to take more time developing the sequels rather than pump out one a year like they did.

It may make development easier to go with already finished ideas, but keeping things fresh and new is paramount to keeping players interested.

Publishers love sequals, less risk, less cost. Everyone else however i'm sure would like some VARIETY.

Price forgot to mention that consumer won't buy anything that doesn't resemble something that came before it. That being said I do love Insomniac.
