Insomniac CEO talks multiplatform, but still loves Sony photo

Insomniac CEO Ted Price enjoys his close relationship with Sony quite a bit, but also sees the benefits of allowing titles to go multiplatform. In an interview with Gamasutra, Price admitted that he could “see the other side” of exclusivity and the profits that big games make by being playable on other platforms.

From the interview:
But, then again, we see the other side too. We see games that are multiplatform succeeding wildly, and doing great, and that too is a fantastic place to be.
By the end of the interview, it is clear that Price enjoys his piece of the Sony pie. He admitted that without Sony’s help, a game like Resistance wouldn’t have had the amount of success that Insomniac is currently enjoying. He also imparted that Sony allows Insomniac to “develop autonomously,” which goes to the show the confidence that Sony has for the developer.

Personally, I’m all about exclusivity when it means a better game is going to come of it. What do you guys think? Would you like to see a developer in Insomniac’s position toss out games for the Xbox 360?

People were BITCHING when Squeenix stated they were releasing Final Fantasy something for the Xbox 360 calling them traitors or whatever. It all depends on what makes more money. Does multiplatform make more money than exclusives? If so then it'd be profitable for Insomniac to do so, of course they might lose some "perks" and help from Sony in the future. Insomniac would also have to deal with diehard console loyalists.

how weird would it be to see ratchet & clank on the 360 and a version for the wii

If the economy keeps tanking, and if they aren't selling enough units of their games on the PS3 only, it may make sense to go multi-platform.

They are a business, and a business needs to make money. Loyalty can only take you so far. That goes for all publishers and businesses.

I certainly would not mind that. Insomniac is some developer, and a game of theirs appearing on the 360 is okay in my book. Just like I know it would be awesome for PS3 owners to have a Bungie-developed game on their console.

Something Resistance-esque (Since it can't actually be Resistance) would be particularly awesome.

would be nice to play resistance with the 360 controller. But that aside I own both so I can still get me ratchet fix

Didn't Sony make them a 2nd party company or something? So they can't go multiplatform...

I don't care. Just don't gimp your game on my preferred platform to makeup for shortcomings on the other consoles.

It would be nice to see more gamers with the chance to experience this great developer's games, but if it means the quality of each game would go down due to them needing to place resources into porting the lead platform's version to other platforms, then I would be against it (which seems to be their belief).

I think that consoles need exclusives. If we didn't we wouldn't have a lot of the great games that we do have which come about because they can maximize the potential of the game on one console. For some games it's fine but I do believe that games like resistance and drakes fortune need to stay exclusive just like games like gears and halo need to so people will have a reason to buy that particular system. Otherwise, whats the point in their being more than one system.

Since no one owns a PS3, this makes sense.

wow dan thats a low blow. And either way resistance 2 is the 5th best selling game worldwide for last week according to vgchartz so i really don't see them going multiplatform anytime soon.

I don't want to see anyone release games on xbox 360. I'd rather have no video game industry than one where microsoft is a leading player. Theirs is a culture of poor quality and lock-in. I've got no interest in that crap.

I think game exclusivity is fine as it allows publishers to, instead of putting so much time into porting, put more time into the development of that game. However i dont think publishers should be exclusive, so that whilst playstation 3 might get final fantasy whatever exclusively, squeenix can make a separate game for the 360 and maybe another for the Wii, allowing all games whatever their platform to experience the publishers style whilst allowing the publisher to focus on game development at the same time

This is terrible. Im a PS3 gamer and even if i saw Halo 3 on my console id still feel terrible for the 360 gamers. its not right. exclusives are almost ALWAYS better than multiplatformers.
