Insomniac brings killer atmosphere to Resistance 3 photo

The differences between Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 are stark, immediately noticeable as the game begins. In fact, even compared to Fall of Man, Resistance 3 has an entirely unique vibe. While Resistance 2 seemed to shed its focus on atmosphere for relentlessly bombarding players with over-the-top battles on a grand scale, Resistance 3 isn't worried about taking a breather to set the mood.

Oh, and those crazy inventive guns that I used once or twice before falling back on typical standby weapons? I don't know what I'd do without 'em now.

After playing through the first few hours of the upcoming shooter, I'm confident after some missteps with 2008's sequel, Insomniac Games is back on track to deliver with Resistance 3.

The opening sequence of the game finds the player in an underground settlement organized by humans in the midwest, more specifically, Oklahoma. Unlike in Resistance 2 -- where players were almost immediately given a magnum and pushed, kicking and screaming, into battle -- Insomniac sets a tone. The game's protagonist, former Sentinel soldier Joseph Cappelli, has shifted his focus from actively eradicating the Chimeran menace to simply surviving. Along with a cluster of human survivors, he lives a simple with his wife and kid, sheltered from the perilous threat of the Chimera.

The first few minutes of Resistance 3 I spend simply exploring. Capelli exchanges pleasantries with his wife, who has just woken him from a nap. His son still lies asleep, motionless in nearby bed, and Capelli reaches over and touches him tenderly. I make my way around the subterranean camp and I see how people are living, and it's a life, but certainly not pretty. A man sleeps on a tattered couch, a mangy dog napping on his chest; a young boy plays with an old wooded train set by candlelight; 50s music crackles softly from a nearby radio.

Visually, the game almost looks like painting, with muted, understated colors and a grainy, film-style filter spread across everything. Going back and playing Resistance 2, you'd be forgiven if you were to think that Resistance 3 isn't even a game in the same series -- the contrast is that striking. Resistance 2 had a crisp look, with hard lines and bright oranges applied generously across what seemed like, well, everything. Resistance 2 had a mechanical, hard look; Resistance 3 feels more organic and human in every way.



After spending some time wandering and rubbing elbows with my fellow survivors, when I finally do have to pick up a gun to defend my home, I'm already invested in the world. I want to protect my home, my family, my friends. Insomniac, as is it's specialty, has provided a slew of curious and enjoyable firearms to do so. When I first pull the trigger on the Bullseye, a weapon that's been a staple of the series since Fall of Man, it's clear that Insomniac means business here.

Every gun feels heavier and more substantial than they have in either Fall of Man or Resistance 2. It doesn't feel like you're playing with some cool toys -- it feels like you're holding weighty, threatening instruments of execution.

When it comes to weapons, Insomniac consistently come up with the most inventive in gaming, whether it be in Resistance or its Ratchet & Clank games. But I found in previous Resistance titles that I shied away from the more exotic weapons, simply because it was easier (and sometimes more effective) to stick to what I knew. In Resistance 3, I've found more reasons to explore, thanks in part to not only how the weapons function, but how the enemies behave.

Take the Bullseye, for instance. This weapon's secondary fire acts as a "tag," which all bullets will then follow, whether that be up, down, behind you, and even around corners. The Chimeran longlegs, which jet briskly around the environment, seem designed to be kill primarily with the Bullseye. When shooting at tagged objects, you'll even see a distinct trail showing you were your bullets are headed. Even some of the game's new weapons, like the electric-bolt-shooting Atomizer, were incredibly useful in battle. This gun's secondary fire lobbed a small gravity well that pulled in enemies from all directions, making it key for a number of "last stand" situations I found myself in.



Weapons are also upgradeable through use in Resistance 3. The upgrades appear to be automatic, and will happen without any input from the player outside of killing Chimera and killing them often. The weapons I encountered in my preview and their upgrades (for both primary and secondary fire) are as follows:

Bullseye
Upgrade 1: Exploding rounds
Upgrade 2: Triple tag

HE .44 Magnum
Upgrade 1: Supercharged rounds
Upgrade 2: Overkill

Auger
Upgrade 1: Triple shot
Upgrade 2: Shock shield

Marksman
Upgrade 1: Eagle Eye
Upgrade 2: Tempest Turret

Rossmore Shotgun
Upgrade 1: Combustion rounds
Upgrade 2: Arsonist grenades

Atomizer
Upgrade 1: Arc charger
Upgrade 2: The Big Bang

Deadeye
Upgrade 1: The Deadener
Upgrade 2: Phase shot

Thankfully, Insomniac has also brought back its "weapon wheel," which pauses the action and allows players to thoughtfully choose weapons on the fly. This also means that you'll be able to keep on you all of the game's wild guns at any given time, unlike the frustrating "choose two" nonsense of Resistance 2. I also noted that the default controls have a more traditional first-person shoot mapping -- clicking the left stick sprinted, the circle button crouches, you'll throw grenades with the left trigger. This compared to Resistance 2's left trigger to run (and also crouch!) and the circle to throw grenades. While you were able to remap the controls (and all of this comes down to personal preference, of course), I think it's smart for Insomniac to adapt to more the more traditional scheme.

Resistance 2 wasn't perfect, but not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. But did seem to be a disappointing departure away from the direction Insomniac seemed to be going with Fall of Man. Resistance 3, on the other hand, seems like a giant leap in a direction that fans of the series (and first-person shooters in general) will appreciate when the game lands on September 6.

Personally I found resistance 3 for the good bit I played it, to be the best of both games.

While R1 is the main Focus you can still see the impact R2 had.

I wasn't a big fan of R1 and liked R2 more. But this seems to bridge both games together quite well so no matter which game you prefer, You'll enjoy R3.

I thought I was getting tired of Resistance, but the more I hear the happier I get. It just looks, and sounds better and better, but I'm still hoping we'll find that Insomniac's Nathan Hale in fact does have a 2nd life to lose for his country. I don't know if it'll be the same game without him.

Hale was killed but it'd be cool to see him come back in some way. I know he's a MP skin so I guess well see what happens. Personally I think it'd be cool to see him as being the main villain.

the one thing I miss about resistance 2 ia rhe co-op mode. Now that still stands out today. Unfortunately it sucked when you played split screen offline but split screen online made it a blast! On another note, I've always used the more "exotic" weapons in the series. I needed them when I was playing the harder difficulties

I'm liking the weapon upgrade system, and I love the look and feel of the game from what I've seen.

For some reason, neither the first nor second Resistance really did it for me; I could only play through about half of both games before feeling like I had seen all I wanted to. I'm really hoping that changes with number 3!

I originally was disappointed that they got rid of the gun-wheel for R2, but then I realized that it was taken out in order to pace the game better, since you couldn't stock up on weapons forever and have an easy time in situations that the game WANTS you to figure out how in the hell you'll survive.

Like when about a hundred running Chimaira are swarming you and all you have is a few grenades, a little bit of assault gun ammo, and a shotgun.

Intense.

I enjoyed what very little gameplay the demo provided.

Resistance was my first PS3 game so the graphics change from PS2-PS3 was amazing and I really enjoyed Resistance 2's co-op/multiplayer moreso than the 1st Resistacnce.
I REALLY hope they use what they did in #2, with #3.

Buying this without any thinking needed.

I'm so glad that they brought back the fun weapons in R3! I adored the sapper in R2 and loved building sapper traps! The game does sound really good and hopefully the multiplayer is also new... something between the outrageous fun of R1 and the 2-gun/class based R2.

I'm really looking forward to R3!

SOLD! I didn't like Reaistance to, but quite enjoyed FoM. From this arrival, sounds like 3 fixes the things I didn't like about 2. The return of the weapon wheel is a huge sell to me.

I don't get it. Resistance 2 got almost unanimously good reviews when it came out(I loved it as well) yet most sites seem to like to take a dig at it at every chance. Oh well, can't wait for R3. One of the few pure shooter fps franchises I'm interested in/love.

insomniac is one of the best at making fun games.

i'm super excited. R1 and R2 were both a lot of fun both single and multiplayer... i played many hours of co-op in R2. that game had a great blend of class-based co-op and frantic competitive multiplayer.

I'm kind of disappointed that the series is still stuck in America. One thing I loved about the first game is the unconventional British setting. The USA is overused as a videogame setting. Give us a Resistance game set in Ireland or Russia or China or something.

Okay, I am now back to being interested in this game. I played Resistance 2 for 1 hour before returning it, I thought it was utter crap. But even after reading this article, I'm going to take a critical eye to Res3 before picking it up. I don't take kindly to getting burned on my gaming purchases nowadays.

I'm suddenly excited for this game. Good preview. I played the beta for R2 and was disappointed by the change to a more "arena" based gameplay. Hopefully this game will bring back the good (and maybe some bad) memories of a time when Resistance was the only game worth playing on the PS3.

The first Resistance was an epic, awesome campaign. The second was solid. But I won't be buying this game, mainly because of the PSN Online Pass BS. Yes, I know it will apply to used copies only. And no, I'm not cheap but an avid gamer that almost always buys new; I also collect retro games and spend more than the average gamer, trust me. And finally, I know that other video games implement similar practices.

Now that I have the initial flame responses out of the way, I would like to say this: The gaming industry is bigger than Hollywood. The $10 going toward an additional online code *isn't* for the guys that write code (and on a side note, I'm sure the fine folks who made R3 are paid more than fairly).

Cry me a effin' river, I could care less if they're getting laid off - every field is hurting right now. I won't be buying this game in protest of the Online Pass BS. Once a games been paid for it is irrelevant if the first buyer is playing it online or someone who bought it used -- the initial money has already been gained. The industry is seeing a piece of the pie that they're not getting and want in on it, and they're screwing the people that support them in the process, the gamer.

Those that are blindly supporting such measures must be the dumbest people on Earth. The business must love you because you're cheering to pay more money for a lesser product. What if I want to play at a friend's house? Or maybe I want to play on another system in my house? This sort of BS cramps my style and is a slap in the face to the consumers who do more than support the industry.

These days, games -- especially FPS -- are meant to be played online and not some 6-hour campaign. So, no thank you, R3. I'm sure my money won't be missed, but I'd rather spend it elsewhere where I'm not punished if I choose to buy used. You want me to buy new? Then design good games that aren't traded in days after release. Look at Goldeneye for the 64, that game's resale value was $50 forever because nobody would trade it in. The same is true for some of today's modern games.

Although I did enjoy Resistance 2, it wasn't nearly as experimental as the first game. It almost felt like that, since the first game didn't sell as well as they had hoped or because a house hold name, they chose to take a few steps back in favor of a more basic and less complicated design. It's nice to see that they are going back and bringing in some of those elements that were sorely missed from the first and actually making them more useful this time around.

I just skipped Resistance 2. I've watched my brothers playing it, and since it seems like an inferior sequel in both gameplay and story, it just doesn't seem like its worth playing.

This game however...This game I'm gonna play the shit out of.

resistance 1 was awesome!, but resistance 2 was fucking shit man, in terms of graphics and gameplay it was shit. so far resistance 3 looks good, but i dont know, the animations look really shitty. i really hope this game to be as fun as resistance 1.

After watching the gameplay footage the gameplay looks generic. It also looks outdated actually and was surprised after seeing how nice the reveal trailer was.
