Inside Microsoft's first retail store photo

Coinciding with the release of Windows 7, Microsoft has opened their very first Microsoft Store in the Scottsdale Fashion Square mall in Scottsdale, Arizona. People camped out overnight in sixty degree temperatures (brrr!) to be among the first to enter the store, and the line persisted in being almost a quarter of a mile in length hours after opening. The allure of free tickets to an Ashley Tisdale concert may have contributed to that.

I took the opportunity to swing by the store and see what all the fuss was about and I have to admit that I walked away rather impressed with what Microsoft is doing here. Follow along with me as I take you through what this new retail outlet has to offer gamers.

Upon walking into the Microsoft Store, it immediately became clear who the software giant was trying to be. Anyone who has spent any time in one of Apple's brick-and-mortar locations would quickly draw parallels between the stores' clean and sparse designs. Rows of tables bearing laptops and desktop monitors feature Microsoft's products and offer a hands-on approach and the Answer Desk, a domineering counter at the rear of the store, is clearly a carbon copy of Apple's "Genius" program.

That said, Microsoft has crafted a beautiful store even if it's one that has been aped from the competition. It's open and airy, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and there is some very sexy tech on display, including the table PCs we've seen pop up at E3 and other events. But what about the games?

360

About 15% (roughly 150 sq feet) of the store's floor space is devoted to Xbox 360 products, taking up about a corner of the store. Five demo stations -- including one with Xbox 360 Xplorer guitars in lieu of standard controllers -- dominate the area, their video displayed via projector on the wall. These are not so much kiosks as sleek, wooden stands holding the controllers about five feet away from the wall

Below the screens are the products. The entire line of 360 accessories are available and a rather impressive selection of software is on offer as well. I was pleasantly surprised to not see an overwhelming dominance of Microsoft-published titles, either, as the games on display cover an excellent cross-section of products that represent the full range of the console.

Kiosk

If you're more of a PC gamer, you're likely to be a little bit disappointed at first. There is a small section in the opposite corner with boxed games and accessories, but it pales in comparison to the console offerings. Fortunately, there are six kiosks with touchscreen displays situated throughout the store where shoppers may order PC software and have it printed on-demand in under four minutes.

On the whole, I'm very impressed with what Microsoft has managed to do here. Does it look like an Apple Store knock-off? Certainly, but I'm not sure that's going to matter. The people who care about that already aren't likely to be shopping in a Microsoft Store to begin with. But, for consumers of the biggest software company in the world, having a place where you can go to buy what you want when you want it in a clean and helpful environment has been a long time coming.

Check out the gallery to see more photos of the new Microsoft Store. Is this the sort of place you can see yourself shopping?

I suppose it'll be a while before such a store comes near the UK, what are the prices like?

@Crazyape69: It's, like, a block from Old Town. Besides, that's not exactly a high traffic area in comparison to Fashion Square.

@Tarvu: Comparable to what you would pay in any brick-and-mortar store, at least where games are concerned. I will admit to not having paid any attention to the prices for the PCs on sale.

Seems pretty spiffy. Like the Apple Store, but not with as many pretentious douche bags.

What sort of PC hardware do they carry? Is it pre-built machines only, or is this going to be the new COMPUSA for when my network card dies and I don't feel like waiting for shipping?

I kind of wish there would be a Linux store somewhere. I get the sense that it would wind up being at a flea market, though.

The 1st Microsoft Store located in Scottsdale, Arizona? Not NYC or LA? What kind of sense does that make? Where's the 2nd store going to be placed, Juneau, Alaska?

Y'know, aside from the nice on-demand printing thing, is there anything from that sets the MS store form just about any other computer store? I mean, i think one of the major points of the apple store was the simple fact that most regular computer stores were not set up to fix Apple products; so they set up stores not to just sell their shit, but to give customers a place to get on hand repairs and such... General PC repair, hardware, software, games; all these are things you can find in any town...

though now i am reminded to looking into upgrading to Win 7

@ CRAZYAPE69 - old town? are you nuts? Thats all native american terqoise and really expensive weird paintings. The only thing worth a darn in old town is the Jazz at kazimierz. http://kazbar.net/

I don't think computers really fit, plus all those shops are tiny.

Mr. Sadistic,

Ya mean without the d-bags, but with the RROD and the BSOD right? Oh and the fact that all PCs there would be stuck with bloatware since most likely they'll use HP/Dell other brand name PC?

Don't get me wrong I'm a PC user, but not everyone who wonder into Apple stores are d-bags.

@gains: I saw no loose hardware, so my assumption would be pre-built machines only.

@jamBOT: The Phoenix metropolitan area is a lot bigger than people think, actually. Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the United States and, just across the street, Scottsdale (particularly that mall) is a well-known for having upscale consumers. Also, it's a high-traffic area that Apple isn't inside -- they're across the street. It's actually pretty ideal for an entry.

Besides, they'll be in SoCal in a few weeks. Don't get your panties in a wad.

I agree with AD. The Apple Genius Bar sucks. I drop 45min to one once, only to have them tell me that I needed my laptop in order to get my mandated free power supply replacement. Even though I had already waited in the crowds for 30 min, and I had the 3-year AppleCare warranty.

Also, they don't want to fix your stuff. They either want to refer you to the internet, or just say "Oh, no, the motherboard's fried. You'll have to get a new one, or pay $400 to fix it."

Why do people give M$ so much kudos for blatantly ripping off other people's ideas? M$ hasn't innovated anything in the history of it's existence, yet every time they release a new product or start a new venture (ala the M$ Store), critics are quick to applaud M$ for doing exactly what someone else has done (and done better). It boggles the mind.

I didnt the plumbing at the Microsoft store in the Mission Viejo mall in SOuthern Ca, and my god do they know how to waste money.

They spent over 500000 on just the monitors! but the dudes from microsoft were assholes, always tryin to lowball and push shit even though they kept changing it. Took us over 2 weeks to set finish because of the shitty bathroom fixtures haha

they made the tv guys MOVE all the tvs on the wall up 3/8 of an inch because they didnt like how it looked! took over a week just to hook everything up. Bastards haha

I find it funny that any computer I might potentially purchase at this store would have to be dual-booted with Linux. I don't like to use Windows anything on a regular basis, since they always seem to catch something when I do.

@Bluemeep. A dedicated linux store would just baffle most people, sure there's some amazing software but I wouldn't use half of it if I wasn't a programmer. I could see a place which was dedicated to just showing off linux technologies would go down well though. It would probably be a bit of a shitstorm though as the different sub-niches fight with their different GPL interpretations for floor space.

@linuxguy. Dude linux users are by no means all commies.
