Quantcast

Insert inflamatory quote from gaming company headline here photo

Crap, did I forget to change the headline? Well, you'll just have to make one up yourself. See these little quotes with one gaming company dissing another come along every week or so and coming up with a new title every-single-time is just far too much work, and I've only been at this for two weekends. Last week it was Sony badmouthing the DSi, now it's Nintendo badmouthing Sony, not to mention laying down some absurdities about offering better online than LIVE.

Nintendo’s President and COO of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime was asked about the current competition in the gaming market and what worries him about the PS3 and 360. In response he said, “What worries me, if I would focus in on Microsoft, we’ve always looked at what they’ve been able to do from an Xbox Live standpoint and we constantly want to say, ‘What can we do to be better than Xbox Live?’…It’s a little hard [to say something nice about the PS3]…They’ve got some great games that they’ve been able to bring out, they’ve been able to get some fantastic content. But, you know, you look at the results and clearly they’ve got some challenges.”

Damn Reggie, coming down hard on the PS3. Way to kick 'em while they're down. Strange that most of that quote isn't direct though. Anyway, the more ridiculous thing here is that Reggie believes that Nintendo can do anything at all better than Xbox LIVE. Their entire online system is lacking. Maybe the first step is to get it right, then try to beat the competition, hmmm?

...Is this a Sterling-esque sarcasm-riddled satire post? What I take from the quotes is that Reggie sees that Xbox Live is superior to Nintendo's online service. And then he really is pretty gracious about Sony too. Am I missing something?

I didn't even know Nintendo has an online 'service'- I thought it was on a game by game basis

I can't believe Nintendo looks at live and thinks what can they do better with the current online model they have. If that were the question they were asking themselves wouldn't Nintendo's online service indeed be better?

We all know Nintendo to be a bit... overconfident these days. I just wonder what 'results' he's referring to... sales figures? Account signups? Aesthetics? It's too ambiguous to draw any conclusions. I do agree, however, that the first step towards competing in a swimming competition is to get in the pool. How can they consider being better than Xbox Live for online service when they barely have a serviceable structure in place?

At least Nintendo doesn't bullshit you with 16 man text chat.

@Daxel: yeah, you'd probably need 16 friend codes.
Anyway Nintendo, don't talk shit unless you have the games to back it up...

Nintendo has very few things better than Live, but those few things do exist.

If you have a WiFi with compatible encryption, it's far easier to set up
There's no need to set up an account.
More family safe.

Overall, as a hardcore gamer, it's not better for me, but for some people out there it is better simply because the other stuff doesn't matter to them.

WFC better than XBL?

XBL doesn't require friend codes for every single game.

alrighty people, lets get our facts straighten out a bit. First where this interview is from:
Interview on game trailers

When Reggie is asked what worries him about the competitors, he says like Dexter345 suggests that he is worried about Xbox Live and they do look to try and beat it (which is good cos it means they are trying to improve what they do)

PS3wise Reggie isnt worried, and ignored talking about Home when asked and diverted to saying they have some great games but when you look overall no really problem.

So pretty fair and it wasnt like Reggie blurted this stuff out he was asked about it.

A lot of people see Nintendo's as being free as a big plus, but just as many people see the payment as a kind of premium for the best online service. Free can be good, but most often than not, the pay service is going to dwarf it. And with good reason.

Would you rather be paying for something that's beaten by something free?

@Naim

How does PSN win? Its barely monitored allowing cheaters to do as they please and the server is run by the company that publishes the game.

In other words, of Konami ever feels like they can pull the plug on MGO and they probably will someday.

Meanwhile I can still play the very first live capable game to ever come out for the Xbox, hell old marketplace content is still there, that's why the pay system is better, its safer and gives me more options and please stop whining about the cost, its 50 bucks A YEAR, I don't know if people whine about it because they are cheap or if its just the gamer entitlement complex rearing its head again.

And Reggie needs to shut the fuck up, he's getting really annoying.

I don't know why people are ragging on Reggie for this. This is one of the only recent things he's said that's not annoying, to me, anyway. He's not saying the Wii's online is better than Xbox Live, and he didn't openly insult Sony. He simply said that he didn't think he had to worry about them. That's a lot more class than when Microsoft and Sony exchange words.

What pedrovay said. This is the tamest, most gracious "inflammatory" thing somebody has ever said about Sony, and he is complimenting Microsoft on what they've accomplished with Xbox Live.

Your kidding me , you actually beleive all thats stuff is on xbl because you pay for, the pay system is a ripoff because there perfectly capable of doing all that for free, they charge people because they actually got people like you to believe that bullsh!t.

I'm not gonna comment on wether or not psn is better than xbl or vice versa because there two differnt systems built on two different ideologies of what online play should be, both more than serve their purpose and its more personal opinion than anything ( yes believe it or not even if cross platform voice chat came to psn I still would'nt give a damn because in all likely hood I would'nt use it), but I will say this the pay system is a ripoff even if its a penny a month, no matter how you spin it your paying 50 bucks a year for something you ALREADY OWN.

After seeing my dsl bill every month the price for xbl is just insulting, but its outright depressing that they have actually gotten people to believe that price is justified.
