Also, they would only do this if they simply wanted Sony to handily demolish them in the next generation. In other words, I'm calling b.s.
Watch as that SM console crashes and burn if the other consoles can play used games.
Also I hope we still transfer all our X360 stats and whatnot to the new platform, and it has backwards compatibility, otherwise I better stop buying games now.
One way you could do this is include a license on the disc. You put the new game in the Xbox, then it installs some crap that the game needs to see before it can play. Like an Online Pass, but instead it gives access to the whole game.
Bullshit, nonetheless.
It wouldn't be that far to turn the 360 into a full PC copy by having codes that only work and tie your account to that disc...
The only of the big three that takes features away in updates and console iteration is Sony (and before anyone goes on about Wii BC being taken out, it was very late in the game, whereas Sony removed it early).
If this proved to be true, however, all I'd be looking at for next gen gaming is PC and Wii U. Platform holders would do well to avoid arrogance in the next gen, as such behavior could just drive more people to Steam or OnLive.
It's sad we even talk about shit like this. Gaming has the most consumer convenient second hand market in the whole realm of small ticket items, and maybe all items in general. So much of the money received by the highly lucrative and convenient used market is recycled right back into the industry, something the second hand markets of almost anything else on the planet could even begin to claim.
your grammar and spelling bug the hell out of me.
then again, my grammar and shit isn't that great either.
Given that the source is close to Kotaku, I wouldn't believe it even if it sounded plausible.
akathatoneguy: Don't be retarded, platform holders don't give a fuck if you can lend a game to a friend or rent a copy. They want you to buy it. This would work like Steam.
Seriously people, we're well into the 21st century. Try to keep up.
It would be product-suicide if they did this, c'mon jim, this is such fucking spam.
Think of it like an online pass, except being a game pass. You can have the media, as you can have a games on demand game on a USB drive, but without it being active on your account you can't play the game.
Now whether MS does this or not is pure speculation, as are any of these rumours which appear to be the fantasies of some buttmad fanboys or professional astroturfers.
I would stop playing games if this is what the industry decides to do.
Sure, Gamestop would be screwed, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if a console banned used games. If console games would follow the same pricing model as PC games, they might just be able to pull it off.
But for every time the industry flips me the bird, it makes it that much easier when deciding on my future purchases or lack there of. If true of course.
I miss the good ole days when developers weren't such whiny fucking cunts
Not unlike having a 3G enabled eReader. the difference in price is ~$50 and by limiting the data it will transfer over 3G to specific store related queries and purchases (tho in this case the games serial) there is little data overhead. Zero after the console gets the green light that this disk is now linked to said console.
