Insanely Insane Rumor: Next Xbox won't play used games photo

Yep, it's another "Next Xbox" rumor, and it is quite possibly the most outlandish hardware rumor we've had in a long time. A source close to Kotaku claims that not only will the "Next Xbox" adopt Blu-ray, it'll also refuse to run any games bought secondhand.

The source admits that he doesn't know how the console would do that. Microsoft responded to the rumor by saying that it's always trying to "push the boundaries" of technology, but would not comment further on this, or on the rumor that Kinect 2 is going to be introduced along with the new console.

This is one rumor that should be taken with a veritable ark full of salt, as I find it difficult to believe that even Microsoft would be so bold as to go this far. Platform holders still rely heavily on GameStop to market and sell systems, and a snub of this magnitude would prove an immense risk without a worthy payoff.

It's also worth noting that we had similar rumors before the PS3 launched, and nothing came of it. While I'd not say that Microsoft definitely won't implement an anti-used system, I find it incredibly unlikely.

How would they do this without also prohibiting borrowed games or rented games from playing correctly?

Also, they would only do this if they simply wanted Sony to handily demolish them in the next generation. In other words, I'm calling b.s.

I can see them doing the same thing as Vita - no achievements on used.

Like I said to my friend in RL when I heard this, hahahahahahahahahahaha.
Watch as that SM console crashes and burn if the other consoles can play used games.

Also I hope we still transfer all our X360 stats and whatnot to the new platform, and it has backwards compatibility, otherwise I better stop buying games now.

Bullshit.

One way you could do this is include a license on the disc. You put the new game in the Xbox, then it installs some crap that the game needs to see before it can play. Like an Online Pass, but instead it gives access to the whole game.

Bullshit, nonetheless.

You can already install games on your 360 HDD like it was a PC game...
It wouldn't be that far to turn the 360 into a full PC copy by having codes that only work and tie your account to that disc...

How would you lock out used games? How would the console even know? Would you just not be able to play a disc without an online pass?

I highly doubt MS would go for this, particularly given its the used market that encourages achievement whores. That and every 360 update adds features like USB stick installs and Kinect features. Nintendo's recent 3DS update added features, too.

The only of the big three that takes features away in updates and console iteration is Sony (and before anyone goes on about Wii BC being taken out, it was very late in the game, whereas Sony removed it early).

If this proved to be true, however, all I'd be looking at for next gen gaming is PC and Wii U. Platform holders would do well to avoid arrogance in the next gen, as such behavior could just drive more people to Steam or OnLive.

I dont think any stock holder would be happy but if you added write capability and a blank sector on each disk, yeah you could lock each disk to a box.Problem is what happens when that machine dies. You could get around that by tying disks to live accounts with the user haveing to be online at all times but i think ubisoft would be first to tell you people dont like that.

This would be an insanely stupid ass move by MS if true. Sad thing is I could see them doing it. They already see the people who buy used as thieves so either losing these people or forcing them to buy new is an acceptable loss for them as they see it. If this did go down I expect to see a huge influx of people buying PS4s, Wii-Us, and gaming capible PCs.

I definitely think that it's do-able in the software, but damn would it be a bad idea. Here's hoping that the fight against used games doesn't go that far.

@cowkaynee Monkeystrudle: Ubisoft would probably endorse it. Unless of course you haven't heard that they took their DRM one step further by having it possibly reject access to the game if you make hardware changes.

Their is almost no way this kind of thing comes to fruition, but I don't doubt for a second that things like it are being discussed. Publisher's war on the average consumer seems to know no bounds, and many of them are so dependent on a dying business model that they'll shore themselves up in the short term any way they can.

It's sad we even talk about shit like this. Gaming has the most consumer convenient second hand market in the whole realm of small ticket items, and maybe all items in general. So much of the money received by the highly lucrative and convenient used market is recycled right back into the industry, something the second hand markets of almost anything else on the planet could even begin to claim.

I cannot honestly see what would motivate Microsoft to do this. Should they care whether or not someone is playing a used game as long as they bought the system? Sure Microsoft has its own line of games, but do they really benefit from eliminating used sales? Well, until we get closer to the official announcement, this tid bit is being filed in the outrageous rumor folder.

Guess we better hope you're right, Jimbo. The rumor seems unlikely given that I'm not sure Microsoft would want to give potential sales to a format made by Sony. Particularly since Blu-ray is still not a leader in software sales.

Sadly even if this happened I think many consumers wouldn't even care or would cave eventually. That's the worst part about all this crap. We can all see it happening right before our eyes but nothing will change. Even if a mass of people came together and boycotted , Microsoft would not get the message and think something else was to blame. Face it , we are not in control of the business side of this industry , we're just along for the ride.

The only possible methods to achieve this are CD-Keys, registrations or a writable checkbox on disc that says it's been activated. Two of those are easily circumvented, and the third isn't really cost or developer friendly.

Given that the source is close to Kotaku, I wouldn't believe it even if it sounded plausible.

Whether or not the next Xbox does include some sort of used copy protection (this could easily be done by using "CD keys" and requiring an online connection to active) one thing is for sure: if anyone ever does implement such a feature before the elimination of physical media it will certainly be Microsoft.

akathatoneguy: Don't be retarded, platform holders don't give a fuck if you can lend a game to a friend or rent a copy. They want you to buy it. This would work like Steam.

Seriously people, we're well into the 21st century. Try to keep up.

I'm assuming rented games would also be seen as "used" games too. Most of the games I play come courtesy of my Gamefly subscription, sooooo this would be, probably, the worst thing ever. Can't see 'em doin' it, anyway; but if they did, I wouldn't buy it.

It's quite simple how it'll be done. Ignoring the distribution format, MS does the same thing today bar optical media. Games on Demand and XBLA games are tied to an account. One could envisage games being distributed on optical or USB media, yet still being associated to an account.

Think of it like an online pass, except being a game pass. You can have the media, as you can have a games on demand game on a USB drive, but without it being active on your account you can't play the game.

Now whether MS does this or not is pure speculation, as are any of these rumours which appear to be the fantasies of some buttmad fanboys or professional astroturfers.

I know on the PS3, each disk is able to tell which PS3 was the first to use it by some unique identifier. This was when they were doing the whole PS Rewards program and how they knew you played 'new, shrink wrapped' games to give you points. I'm sure this is floating around in a FAQ somewhere if people want to verify this. Not out of the question for MS to have similar tech.

I would stop playing games if this is what the industry decides to do.

I welcome this, but before people start flaming me, at least hear me out: PC gaming doesn't have used games, and it does just fine. The prices are also cheaper on PC games, and PC gamers enjoy frequent sales on games, ranging anywhere from 50-75% off of titles. You can seriously pick up 20 great titles for $100 during one of these sales. Truthfully, I haven't touched my consoles in weeks thanks to Steam sales.

Sure, Gamestop would be screwed, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if a console banned used games. If console games would follow the same pricing model as PC games, they might just be able to pull it off.

Only really one of two ways the console could do that and its either that every game has a unique ID that is registered online from the first console it is played from. Or there will be just enough writing capacity in the blueray player to burn the systems ID onto a new game disk.

But for every time the industry flips me the bird, it makes it that much easier when deciding on my future purchases or lack there of. If true of course.
