Insane Christian group wants to ban Modern Warfare 2 photo

It wouldn't be Christmas without some good ol' fashioned Christian intolerance, would it? A bunch of radical wingnuts have taken issue with Modern Warfare 2, declaring that all decent people should denounce it and the "massacre level" contained within.

"All decent people should denounce the video game Modern Warfare 2 and join in opposing the sale and use of such games," says Maine's Christian Civic League, promoting the love and understanding that Christianity is known for. "Moreover, it may be time for Maine to begin a debate over the advisability of banning these games completely, giving due consideration to both the First Amendment, and the danger these violent games pose to the public."

Apparently, games, drugs and "outrageous" rock music are part of a "witch's brew" that will "lead to tragedy" in Maine.

Sounds about right for people like this -- "I don't agree with something, therefore it is dangerous and should be banned." Pretty much the same thinking that led to witch burning, stoning and other paranoia-driven atrocities committed in the name of THE LAWD.

Speaking of which, this very same Christian group actually DID accuse a bookstore owner of being a witch who can cast spells on people. Seriously.

Well, I can understand if they don't like it. I didn't buy it, but for different reasons entirely, but hey. look on the bright side, at least your crazy Christians in the states aren't actually in a position to ban the games like our friend in South Australia. Its funny, I have some friends who are fairly hardcore christians (no pre-marital sex? suckers) but even they oppose the banning of games... just goes to show they aren't all insane. Just the insane ones.

The difficulty in in marginalizing extremist groups like this is that it's difficult to indoctrinate youth into a moderate, skeptical mindset. It's much easier to teach them that a big bearded man in the sky made everything and his mouth piece the preacher knows whats best. It must be nice to be able to defer responsibility for your thoughts, actions and beliefs to someones ancient imaginary friends.

I'm not too sure about the numbers but I think more people have been killed in the name of Christianity than in Modern Warfare's 2.

I really like that their trying to use the first amendment to protect their right to essentially stop someone else from exercising their constitutional rights (Free speech/expression on the part of the developer and the pursuit of happiness on the part of the consumer). Did anyone else find this ironic?

"Visitors to Rita Moran's bookstore will see that the occult is mixed in with the ordinary so as to almost be imperceptible. In the same way, the forces of darkness operate unnoticed in our civic life disguised as "marriage equality" (homosexual marriage) or "freedom of choice," (abortion) and few citizens are brave enough to call these practices what they really are - evil."

People like this aren't a bad thing. They are fanatical. Like all of you are about videogames. What they are doing to your "religion" are the same things you are doing to theirs. Its funny sometimes when you think about it, when people say things like "a bearded man in the sky" is a joke, and then turn around a dedicate hours upon weeks to a videogame. I've done it. Especially with Street Fighter 4. Now, before anyone decides to take bits and pieces of my post, relax. I'm just saying, it's all relative.

On a side note, I read destructoid in condensed mode because normal mode runs like shit. Its pretty bad when I can tell who wrote the article just by the headline. Jim: The Retard Buzzword Queen.

Who cares? These people are part of the past. They lost the battle against rock and roll, they lost the battle against alcohol, they lost the battle against the gays, and they've already lost the battle against "rap music" and "them video games". They're still around of course - losing the battle didn't make them all die or lose the ability to talk.

But they have very little influence over anyone not directly related to them. They can't possibly fight against the modern entertainment industry and they are so out-of-touch that they will be unable to convince anyone of anything.

The only people who would listen to a group like this, are the same people who wouldn't buy video games for their children in the first place. This sort of ranting and raving against the "evils of society" appeals only to people who already believe in that sort of scare-mongering nonsense. They are preaching to their own choir. Let them.

Sucks to be their kids though.

You all make me a Sad Panda.

As a Christian I have to say that I find the calls to ban MW2 as idiotic and insane. I don't condone this type of mindless censorship and, considering I've spent most of my life growing up in a church friendly environment, I don't know of anyone else who thinks like that either.

So, the next time you want to speak out against a certain group of people who call for stupid crap like this Civics League, how about you stop generalizing and including the other 90% of Christians who don't.

Disclaimer: This comment isn't for Jim. I agree with his article and, honestly, the maine christian civics league sounds like a bunch of insane people, but the commentators? Eh, At least think before you type something out.

Agreed. While I know Jin won't because he's Jim fucking Sterling and he does what he wanna it's be nice if we could stop talking about these people and leave them to their little boxes.

The only thing that gives them ammo is exposure no matter how important or what spin is put on it.

You agree with then you're one of them. You disagree with them you're the source of the problem and that only fuels their fires.

But seriously that bookstore story is awesome.

You know I'm not sure what's dumber the thought that in a country that has allows the legal right to have a gun in your home a the game is what's more likely to kill you (What you gonna do try to shoot people with your controller?!?) or that the best way to react to someone banning something that they don't about because they have little or no connection to it is banning something that you don't about because you have little or no connection to it.

Fuck religion threads. Once you add God to the equation everyone thinks they know the right answer...

Before you call someone a moron, you should probably learn the difference between "your" and "you're". Here's a hint: they're (not their or there) not the same word.

Then again, Bush probably doesn't know the difference either. Maybe that's why you support him, because he's on the same level as you?

Can we quit calling these idiots "Christian"? They have no better grasp on Christianity than terrorists have on Islam. They're fanatical to the point they have no real clue to what god they worship, because they've perverted the actual teachings of the Bible to read what they want to hear. The only thing types like these really worship is the sound of their own voice.

No I'm stating how I see it from my view and how I see it is this: If you agree with them they accept you and rally on. If you disagree they see you as a part of the problem.

Considering I was raised by anti-videogame rallying Baptist Christians I'm just telling you if you fight them it only gives them more reason to retaliate. Just let them be. They're a minority of extremist and they're not hurting anyone. These kinds of articles just fuel flames on both sides.
