It wouldn't be Christmas without some good ol' fashioned Christian intolerance, would it? A bunch of radical wingnuts have taken issue with Modern Warfare 2, declaring that all decent people should denounce it and the "massacre level" contained within.
"All decent people should denounce the video game Modern Warfare 2 and join in opposing the sale and use of such games," says Maine's Christian Civic League, promoting the love and understanding that Christianity is known for. "Moreover, it may be time for Maine to begin a debate over the advisability of banning these games completely, giving due consideration to both the First Amendment, and the danger these violent games pose to the public."
Apparently, games, drugs and "outrageous" rock music are part of a "witch's brew" that will "lead to tragedy" in Maine.
Sounds about right for people like this -- "I don't agree with something, therefore it is dangerous and should be banned." Pretty much the same thinking that led to witch burning, stoning and other paranoia-driven atrocities committed in the name of THE LAWD.
Speaking of which, this very same Christian group actually DID accuse a bookstore owner of being a witch who can cast spells on people. Seriously.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
He actually doesn't do it all that often. I find the stories interesting sheerly for the knowledge that people like this still exist.
I think I've just been converted...
"Believe what I say or I'll hurt you."
Stereo typing?
Actually, it was a Family Guy reference.
Now to wait for the inevitable, "I'm open-minded, but I'm going to hate on all Christians regardless of their personality or beliefs anyway" post.
Seriously reading that completely made me want to join the occult. Thanks Christian Civics League! I have found purpose in witchcraft.
I mean they did imply I'll learn how to control hordes of the undead.
On a side note, I read destructoid in condensed mode because normal mode runs like shit. Its pretty bad when I can tell who wrote the article just by the headline. Jim: The Retard Buzzword Queen.
But they have very little influence over anyone not directly related to them. They can't possibly fight against the modern entertainment industry and they are so out-of-touch that they will be unable to convince anyone of anything.
The only people who would listen to a group like this, are the same people who wouldn't buy video games for their children in the first place. This sort of ranting and raving against the "evils of society" appeals only to people who already believe in that sort of scare-mongering nonsense. They are preaching to their own choir. Let them.
Sucks to be their kids though.
As a Christian I have to say that I find the calls to ban MW2 as idiotic and insane. I don't condone this type of mindless censorship and, considering I've spent most of my life growing up in a church friendly environment, I don't know of anyone else who thinks like that either.
So, the next time you want to speak out against a certain group of people who call for stupid crap like this Civics League, how about you stop generalizing and including the other 90% of Christians who don't.
Disclaimer: This comment isn't for Jim. I agree with his article and, honestly, the maine christian civics league sounds like a bunch of insane people, but the commentators? Eh, At least think before you type something out.
"Jesus does not approve of shotguns akimbo."
Priceless xD
Agreed. While I know Jin won't because he's Jim fucking Sterling and he does what he wanna it's be nice if we could stop talking about these people and leave them to their little boxes.
The only thing that gives them ammo is exposure no matter how important or what spin is put on it.
You agree with then you're one of them. You disagree with them you're the source of the problem and that only fuels their fires.
But seriously that bookstore story is awesome.
Fucking phone. My laptop better be here today.
Finally... a story i can get behind.
More of this, less drama-queen. kthx
Yes they are. They make everyone look bad. They make normal Christians look bad and even your typical nut job seem slightly normal when compared.
Fighting against your freedom to choose by deciding what we should play, watch, read and whatever else while pushing their belief system into are faces while accusing people of fucking witchcraft. How can they not be considered a bad thing?
-- George Carlin
You accuse them of being intolerant, but you sound just as bigoted and intolerant as they are.
Fuck religion threads. Once you add God to the equation everyone thinks they know the right answer...
Before you call someone a moron, you should probably learn the difference between "your" and "you're". Here's a hint: they're (not their or there) not the same word.
Then again, Bush probably doesn't know the difference either. Maybe that's why you support him, because he's on the same level as you?
Now you're getting it! *smack*
I find it all rather amusing, and the most astute observation I've seen is these groups always seem to rally against what's popular. I mean, where is that guy who crusaded against pokemon now?
No I'm stating how I see it from my view and how I see it is this: If you agree with them they accept you and rally on. If you disagree they see you as a part of the problem.
Considering I was raised by anti-videogame rallying Baptist Christians I'm just telling you if you fight them it only gives them more reason to retaliate. Just let them be. They're a minority of extremist and they're not hurting anyone. These kinds of articles just fuel flames on both sides.
