We hope you're not Bionic Commando-ed out yet. Capcom has released a slew of new screens of the game, along with an official press release that reveals a little more about the upcoming downloadable title.

As you likely already know, Bionic Commando Rearmed is an updated version of the 1988 8-bit classic But a simple coat of new paint is not enough, as Capcom are also promising a 2-player co-op mode, new weapons, and a slick audio/visual overhaul. Additionally, the game will feature "cross-game interoperability" -- by completing certain parts in Rearmed, you can unlock new content in the upcoming next-gen Bionic Commando. You guys are going to play that game also, right? Right?

This new sexiness will be available for the Xbox LIVE Arcade, the PlayStation Network, and PC later this year.

BIONIC COMMANDO® REARMED REPORTS FOR DUTY AS DIGITAL DOWNLOAD

Capcom Brings New Life to 8-Bit Classic with Modern Makeover

SAN MATEO, Calif. — January 18, 2008 — Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced Bionic Commando Rearmed™, a makeover of the classic 8-bit game originally released 20 years ago. Bionic Commando Rearmed will be available for digital download from Xbox LIVE® Arcade, PLAYSTATION®Network and PC this spring. This announcement follows the news that Capcom will be releasing an all new next-generation sequel to Bionic Commando® on Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Sony Computer Entertainment’s PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system and PC platforms.

Bionic Commando Rearmed sees a return of the intense 2D side scrolling, shooting and grappling action from the much-loved 1988 Bionic Commando on the original 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System™. Bionic Commando Rearmed brings the amazing gameplay up to date with stunning new visuals, new weapons, online rankings, a reworked musical score and the addition of a 2-player co-op mode. The title will also provide cross-game interoperability, as completing parts of Bionic Commando Rearmed will unlock new content and provide secret insight into characters and plot of the brand new Bionic Commando sequel coming later in 2008.

“The release of Bionic Commando Rearmed allows us to deliver to fans of the original game a remake they have been clamoring for, while also introducing the series to a whole new audience,” commented Ben Judd, Producer of both the Bionic Commando projects. “And with GRIN taking care of development, we can ensure that there is real consistency across both the Bionic Commando titles.

Bionic Commando Rearmed will contain the following features

  • Classic Bionic Commando gameplay focused around the use of the bionic grappling arm
  • 2-player co-op mode
  • Total modern visual revamp, including dynamic shadows, particle effects and environmental damage
  • Reworking of musical score
  • Cross-game interoperability – complete specific parts of Bionic Commando Rearmed to unlock new content and hints for the Bionic Commando sequel
  • In-game art designed by one of Capcom’s most talented artists, Toshiaki Mori

My biggest complaint is that he looks tough. I preferred it when he was a lanky nerdy looking special ops guy.

@ the vinny club: I agree!

I don't know why they are doing like a dual release of the game, especially when the side scrolling version looks light years better than the 3D version. I know I will be buying this, not sure on the whole 3d thing though.

Niero, sometime we just can't relate to all the main characters...(O-BURN)! Just kidding man, they did totally give him a new edge but most games are heading that way as you have to have a buff n rough type guy in there, well besides final fantasy men boys that is.

It's not awesome unless there is a head-oriented explosion of a certain dictator who had a inkling against a religious sect.

It's too bad the game's not utilizing the real, uncensored story. Replacing Nazis with Badds/Imperials and Hitler with Master D? The hell is wrong with Capcom?! We're not in the 80's anymore where you couldn't do stuff like that in the US.

Wasn't the boss of the original one Hitler?

Capcom Guy 1: "Uh oh, Hitler! That's scary! What will we do for this remake!?"

"I know, how about we make M. Bison fat."

WTF is that shit?

Yeah, sadly games are going in that direction, and it's really disappointing cause making every character huge is the easiest decision design wise. If they'd put half their effort into making them actually interesting instead of focusing on the bad-dudeness, they'd be one step closer to an even greater game.

However, they choose the route that pleases the widest demographic. And we all know pleasing people and making a great game are totally different approaches.

150% with Niero on this one.

But still, I definitely wanna play this. On the PC.
