Infinity Ward: Wii can't deliver a cinematic experience photo

Hey, Infinity Ward, why no Modern Warfare 2 on Wii? It's the most popular home console, and the game is everywhere else, so why does Nintendo's white box o' waggle get Treyarch hand-me-downs instead of the biggest shooter of the year? According to the developer, the answer is simple: The Wii just can't do what Infinity Ward wants it to do.

"If we felt like we could deliver the cinematic experience we were going for on other platforms, then we would gladly move to that platform," explains Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling. "Right now, we don't think the Wii can deliver the exact experience that we’re doing. We like to be very equal across all platforms, and if it’s not equal then we won’t do it."

Fair enough, I guess. Do you think it's right for the more "cinematic" developers out there to overlook the Wii, or does Nintendo's system simply have an unfair reputation as a machine that can't handle anything more complex than Carnival: Funfair Games. I know if, given the choice, I'd easily take the hi-def version over a Wii version, but what about you lot?

Not only that. It would make for poor controls. I don't play blocbusters in the wii because arguably there are none and you have to agree it doesn't make sense financially for companies(Madworld, The Conduit, Dead SPace Extraction all failed).

I wouldn't call this a "cinematic experience" any more than GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. If I wanted a lot of yelling and bad drama, I can just visit my parents.

Most of the more mature games failed because of poor marketing- the majority of Wii owners have never even heard of these titles, of course they're not going to sell well. How many ads did you see for The Conduit, or even Dead Space?

Conversely, how many ads did you see for Grand Theft Auto 4 or Halo 3? How about the Beatles Rock Band?

I agree that it can't do what IW (or the majority of devs for that matter) want. And I totally see that.

But to say it can't delirver cinematic experiences isn't entirely true. It's really just limited to how much the dev is dependent on graphics, HD, flashiness. With some creativity and effort the Wii can definitely cinematic moments.

I would also like to point out that IW says specfically that the Wii can't handle what they want to do. Not that the Wii can't handle cinematic stuff in general.

Just sayin' the headline is very misleading.

A cinematic experience does not equal fun, otherwise all games would be better off as movies.

Yeah, that headline is really misleading and taking IW words out of context.

Anyways, if your headline is what they really meant, that would mean no consoles other than the 360 and PS3 are capable of cinematic experiences, which is completely untrue. I feel like we went over this whole topic back in 2006. Talk about beating a dead horse. The Wii is not as powerful as a 360/PS3, oh no!

But I get what they are saying. IW creates a high end product, and even if they were able to port their product to the Wii, it would not be the experience they want gamers to have. It makes sense.

What does the pixelated header image have to do with the wii?

The wii is not known for pixelating it's games. I don't get it. Also

Fuck you still for putting that blurry header image of the netflix logo on the wii net flix topic. >:O

I feel sorry for people who only own a Wii. Not specifically because of Infinity Ward, but because of all the great games that aren't on the Wii. I tried for over a year to be a good Wii owner, but I had to break down and get a PS3 because of the lack of decent games on the Wii. Other than Metroid Prime Trilogy, I haven't bought or played my Wii for months and months... But I do want to try A Boy and His Blob and NSMBWii.

Somehow they delivered cinematic experiences during the last 'gen' am I to believe these skills have been lost in the sands of time?

Or am I to understand that: More polygons in yo face = a more cinematic experience?

Though what Robert Bowling is *specifically* saying is the things they're aiming for doing on 360/PS3 hardware is not do-able on the Wii's hardware, which is true.

However after the recent online chat with IW with user questions I'm almost inclined to believe IW is currently staffed by answering machines and a man from the Falklands who can only communicate by including "FUCKING" in everything he says.

It's not just graphics. Wii can't handle the vehicle levels, or the AI, or the number of enemies on screen, zombie mode is missing in w@w and multiplayer map size is about half. I played w@w to double prestige on Wii - it was good, in fact one of the better Wii games by far. But compared to 360 or PS3 it is an inferior experience in every way.

Could they do a port? Or course, it would just be an inferior product. Treyarch will probably do the port in two years time. :P

I don't have a Wii, but they clearly have some of the best games of this gen. Even if they aren't "cinematic". Metal Gear Solid was one of the most cinematic games I've ever played, and it was on PSone and Gamecube.

They seem like they're making a sound business move.

Its all about your artstyle, and IW doesn't seem to be in the business of being especially abstract, visually.

Would Black Hawk Down have been nearly as intense if it had shitty special effects?
No.

As the intensity of both rely mostly on realism and visuals, as they're both action-driven stories that take place in the real world, yes, they'll be better experience when made with the most modern, convincing tech available.

Does that mean Wii games can't be cinematic? No, but No More Heroes and Okami, the two best examples i can think of, are cartoons. (and You don't reeeally need Disney movies in HD, etc.) But even Sudo 51 says he can no longer use the Wii if he wants to expand on his ideas. That's the Wii's best 3rd party dev talking. Ouch.

The Wii HD edition is most likely to just be capable of outputting a HD video. There will most probably not be much of a difference, if any, with regards to available horsepower for rendering graphics and physics in games like this. All I see on the Internet is thait might sport a Blu-Ray drive with full 1080p output signal. That alone, I am afraid, will just not suffice for future games, unless there's a reasonable processor and Graphics chip upgrade.

At least I thought so. A 1080p resolution means 1920x1080 pixels, 720p means 1280z720 pixels and so on. Wii has less than 720p, so I guess that means fewer pixels.

Sometimes cinematic video games are nice, but usually I agree with this comment from HEL105:

That said, it's no secret that Wii is underpowered. The console still has good games to enjoy, but it's easy to understand why developers who rely on graphics and/or movie-like narrative to make their games worth playing might choose to avoid it.

Good for them. I'd rather they not put out anything at all if they feel they're going to be constrained too much. Look at what happened to the DS port of Call of Duty 4. Let the Wii work to its strengths. There's plenty of good games on it that don't depend on cinematics to be entertaining.

Wow a lot of wii bashing.

I see a lot of Pussy developers that replace the word Cinematic with HD

The wii does have weaknesses but it really unfair how the are arguing that they cannot make a good wii game.

Hell look at Ninja Gaiden NES that was 2d and yet had a real "cinematic experience"

FF6 was good in SD, TS2 was good in SD, TS3 was good in SD, COD2 was good in SD.

Heck I can make a true cinematic experience on a wii game very easy, you just need to be smart and use the RULE OF THIRDS with your camera angles.

I agree the wii is not HD and has a lack of power, but that did not stop Nintendo from making LOZ TP better in every way.

I still have not seen a single wii game look better than Super Mario Galaxy, from Third Party.

The fact it is a DEVELOPER problem because they have to have HD, and they just can't go back to SD because they are PUSSES.

FYI The Higher resolution = the more pixels per space, not space per pixel (unless you are not using you TV at lower resolution than it's max )

I just now got to play COD4 on PC, 3 months after playing COD5 wii and I have to say I like COD5 wii more.

Besides that Infinity Ward just seems like a bunch of pusses that really can't get over themselves.

Treyarch all the dam way baby!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting to know how the PS2 could provide a "cinematic experience" for a lot of companies (*cough* Square-Enix *cough*), but the Wii which is more than 3 times as powerful can't.

There's no good excuses for lazy developers these days are there.

I'm not gonna come down on either side of the "should mature games be on Wii" argument right now, but I do want to point out that Resident Evil 4 on GameCube proves comments like "Wii can't deiliver a cinematic experience" are pretty much complete nonsense. It's simply that no-one's actively trying to do it. But it can be done.

The wii is a tragedy. It's great when I can dust it off for some Metroid Prime or MadWorld. But those sort of games are too rare. They're the exception, not the rule. Intuitive gameplay can win over less-than-state-of-the-art graphics, everybody gets caught up in the get-rich-quick gimmick machine. Developers don't want to give the console a chance, so we really can't give it one either.

The wii's pointer controlls always made perfect sense to me with shooters. It's a shame the graphics can't deliver, and our expectations are so low for the system.

Maybe an HD "Wii 2.0" will be what developers finally need to move past shovelware and be a little more ambitious.

Well... I think the Wii can deliver a "cinematic experience" (whatever that means really). But that isn't what Bowling said here. If you've ever been involved with making a game on the Wii you will know how limiting it can be, especially with its lack of processing/RAM. MW2 seems to be going for a very realistic, intense experience, which really is helped by clean, photo-realistic images and the ability to throw a ton of things on-screen at once, something the Wii cannot handle well. That said, a great game of cinematic quality could be done on the Wii if it took advantage of the things that the system is capable of. Of course that doesn't guarantee sales, but there are a few games around the band on Wii that do have me curious about its future. It isn't what you use to paint on the canvas, it's the idea behind it that is most important.

Hasn't every video game console ever catered to childish man-fantasies?

Then if I can (1) Shoot Zombies on it, (2) violate my enemies by shoving a chainsaw up their ass and (3) other people are making cinematic games for it - I think its safe to say it can have a cinematic game experience.

But, man, a game where all that matters to people is online play, calling each other faggots and rage-quitting when they lose - yeah, really manly and real cinematic.
