Infinity Ward using Steamworks for Modern Warfare 2 on PC photo

Hey you! Yeah, you. Come over here.

Even with all of the drama surrounding Infinity Ward's decision to go with IWNET rather than the usual dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2, causing a large, vocal group of gamers to protest, you still want to get the game on PC anyway.

Yes, this news is dedicated to you. All versions of Modern Warfare 2 PC, as announced today, will include Valve's publishing suite Steamworks. In other words, this means auto-updating, anti-cheat technology, Achievements, and Steam Cloud support.

And while it while it wasn't specified one way or the other, it's probably going to be the method for which downloadable content is released, too. And since you aren't in the mood to "teach IW a lesson" or wish that someone would "die of AIDS," you'll probably want a link to the Steam page for the game. Here it is.

Call of Duty PC previously: 50 players maximum on dedicated servers

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 PC[Console]: 16 players max on matchmaking

Yea. No deal.

Seriously, I haven't seen such a terrible PC downgrade of a respectable series that sold millions in my entire gaming career.

Full Steam integration is the only good choice they've made for this game.

This does not excuse the rest of the flaws afflicted on this game for the PC. This has become just a purely flawed game now. Not just a PC failure, but a failure as a developer producing a game, luckily there's lots of other games to get this year.

Magnalon: Haha exactly, even the PC version of UT3 looks good compared to this.

Still, no thanks.

Maybe in 7 years when it's part of a buy 3 games for £10 deal?

Unless this adds dedicated servers and custom content I don't really see how this fixes anything.

I gotta say, I was so damn excited for this game, but after hearing about how they've essentially fucked over any Australians who want a ping of less than 450, on a server with people they know they can trust for a good game, without having to organize each match, I pretty much lost all interest.

I've never not bought a game because of something a developer did that I didn't agree with. But in this case, it really will affect the gameplay of the game, and it will be a lesser experience for it.

I'll still buy it for sure. But now I'll just wait until Steam has a sale. Which it eventually will.

I doubt Activision will let any sale on the game anytime soon. Perhaps in one year, unless the pc version flops.

Waaaa, I can't hack my game! I have to play it the way the developers wanted!

Grow up.

@ Icarus-Rising,

Who was that even aimed at?

Anyway.. on a more rational note. I'm surprised at how many people now claim they won't be buying this game. Not that they're not completely entitled to, in fact I think it's kind of a good thing. That's the best way to get developers/publishers to do what you want. Don't buy their product until they do.

Too bad this game will still sell like hotcakes. They could rerelease Modern Warfare 1, but instead slap a 2 on the package, and it'd still sell ridiculously well.

@runtheplacered

I think he is one of the console people that are uneducated about the difference of Modding (Cheating) on the consoles and modding (Improving/adding/converting) on the PC. Someone needs to make an article or something highlighting the differences of the two for those that are unaware of the major difference.

Hence the term "eventually", hahah; I don't mind waiting, there is PLENTY to play :D

Don't get me wrong, this game still looks awesome, and I'm sure the matchmaking will be fine for most people in the end. But the internet in Australia is bad enough as it is, and I just want to be able to easily connect to a local server with good bandwidth when I want to. I don't want to connect to some random dudes 1.5mb connection in Canada where I lag almost a whole second behind.

Hrmmmmm....hmmmm hriki thinking. Don't most games that work off steamworks come with a downloadable dedicated server tool? Or are my hopes too high :O

@Skribble:

Forget about the lag. Imagine CS:S with only the matchmaking model, where every people would vote to skip every map that's not Office or Dust 2. Try that for 2 years...

Such a shame that Steam's easy to use server-listing feature wont be used here.

US Steam price: 59.99 USD
AUS Steam price: 89.99 USD

Something... seems a little off. We as a country are probably going to have the most issue with the new multiplayer setup as well.

@runtheplace; I'd rather buy MW1, so yeah :P

Steam integration is a good thing. Steam has lovely dedicated server frontends, let's use that, eh activision? :)

Right now, you'd be looking into a delay or a patch if they give in and include dedicated server support so not even that will make any difference.

Also note that on steam the price its still $59.99 I'd pay the premium difference if the steam version was not crippled and was allowed dedicated servers, otherwise I rather get Left 4 Dead 2 on steam instead.

I was going to get this Day 1 but now I'm going to sit back and see what happens. It seems like public opinion is so low for the PC version that this is going to be dead early. It's a real shame but there are plenty of games coming out.

Best case scenario, they break or someone finds a way to make dedicated servers.

Finally, an article geared for me! I am THAT against the analog stick for aiming... here's hoping that having to configure Steamworks before playing is optional.

P.S : "getting" is not the same with "buying". If you catch my drift. (Yes, it is about piracy).

Wow you kids with your piracy and still you bitch about it.

"Call of Duty PC previously: 50 players maximum on dedicated servers "

which one? mw1 or before? if it was mw1 there were no maps that could support 50 players and still allow a decent match in my opinion.
