Infinity Ward is listening to your party chat complaints photo

By now, if you've played Modern Warfare 2 online, you will have noticed some of the playlists don't allow the use of Xbox LIVE's party chat functionality. The main reason for the lack of support is that people with way too much time on their hands can use the private chat to jump onto opposing teams and cheat.

A fair amount of people play Modern Warfare 2 for fun with friends, and they are rightfully pissed off over the decision. Beyond that, some of the folks who play this type of multiplayer tend to be rather sketchy -- sometimes, we just want to get into a party so we don't have to listen to annoying teammates drone on.

To play devil's advocate here, yes, there is the option to mute anyone individually. Plus, a team-focus game like this is better for everyone when players actually function as a team.

When asked if Infinity Ward was paying attention to this outcry, creative strategist Robert Bowling said the studio is indeed listening. Whether or not that means the team will change anything remains to be seen.

And while we're on the subject, all versions of MW2 got three new playlists: Mosh Pit, 3rd Person Team Tactical, and Team Deathmatch Express. That last one sounds pretty terrific if you ask me.

[Thanks, JJBro1]

1. Go to edit profile
2. Go to privacy settings
3. Go to voice and text
4. Select friends only

It's a stupid workaround that you shouldn't have to do in the first place, but still, it's there if anyone wants to use it.

Plz people get over the lack of DS.
I got it on PC and thought its more laggy and random that it should be, the game is pretty damn good, and still a superior version compared to the consoles. Play or don't

They've got to bring back party chat on the less tactical game modes like TD matches and the like. The call of duty community is largely made up of mouthy kids and idiots and I really shouldn't be forced to listen to how they want to fuck each others Mums.

@G Julian Williams

Think of it this way: There are two multiplayer modes in CoD4 & WaW for PC (large scale and small scale). Now there's only one in MW2. In a simplified fashion think of it that way: There were 2 now there's only 1.

We're on about the 360 version but PC gamers yet again have to make it about DS. Honestly, no matter how big a fuss you people make it's not gonna happen. They've made their millions, broke records and good few of the "boycotters" have already broke down and bought it. For most PC gamers, the bark was louder than the bite and its shown.
But this is actually something that can change.

What Kif said, and I haven't had a problem yet. We just don't use voice chat, considering our party is the entire team anyways.

Well, 99% of the time. Even then, I don't mind listening and communicating with others. The mute button is there for a reason.

I always thought party chat in certain modes of MW was a bad idea anyway.

I don't get the big deal about this party chat stuff. You think that just because every multiplayer game before MW2 allowed it means that you should have it now? Times are changing you spoiled console gamers. Get over it.

How does it feel?

I don't know why they had to go and break party chat. There's a much easier solution. Just black out the screens of the people who are dead. That way they can't tell their teammates what's going on, because they can't see what's going on. You could just put up a scoreboard and some stats. Maybe even a radar/map. It's a pretty simple fix, and people could still chat about bullshit while killing and dying. Everyone wins right?

Lack of party chat functionality is a big problem.

My other main complaint is that Special Ops doesn't have more options for online play. Its either one player or two player via invite. Why I can simply search for a random co-op player to play with online, as well as via invite here is beyond me. The fact the its not possibly to do some co-op mission, without two players on veteran, hurts the game more.

I hope they improve Special Ops more, because more online games are about co-op play over one on one/death match play.

I'd like it if they'd listen to the dedicated server complaints, but PC gamers are apparently spineless and went and bought the game anyway. Oh well, pirated MW2 for single, will play MW1 for multi.

Wow it didn't take long for the bitter PC people to show their tough guy faces here did it? If you are so bitter over no dedicated servers, if it's a feature you can't live without, don't play it, it's that simple. Other than that let's see if IW will change this option for those 360 users in the future, because that is what this article is about after all.

Well that's shitty. 6400 people want party chat and they consider it, but 200,000+ want dedis and they ignore us? And then on top of that, they don't even hide the fact that it's a console port in the hex of the executable? That's just fucking low.

Oh, and those of you calling us PC gamers spoiled and whiny and what not, look at it this way: It's like we bought a Ferrari and found the engine of a Toyota inside of it and were told that it's better. We're not spoiled, we just have a more powerful platform and being given a less powerful experience while being told that it's better is like a slap in the face to those of us who understand networking technology and why the listen server system simply pales in comparison to the client-server system that a dedicated server uses.

I think it would be cool if they let Party Chat back in for anything that has respawns.

I have no problem with it not being in S&D, I'm sure that can be very frustrating.
B-Radicate's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/15/2009 22:49

What's most frustrating is that certain game types, like 3rd person Team Deathmatch allow for the Party Chat, but first-person Team Deathmatch doesn't. Are they saying if you play 3rd person you're allowed to "cheat?" Or did they do it to get people to give the playlist a chance? Also, individual modes like Domination (and the aforementioned TD) don't allow it, but if you play Groundwar, which is made up SOLELY of Team Detahmatch and Domination, no Party Chat. WTF?

It's as if they chose which playlists to remove the feature from at random. The only mode it makes sense to remove, imo, is S&D since it's objective based AND there are no respawns. Any playlist that includes a no respawn gametype should not have it, all others should. It's a basic feature built into the system and opening up the ability to remove core LIVE functionality on Microsoft's part is absurd. One of the main reasons I stopped playing Killzone 2 on PS3 was how annoying it was to meet up with friends and chat whether we were in the same game or not. It's a basic feature of a service I PAY MONEY FOR. What are they going to do next, remove my ability to download game content and force me to buy it all at retail?

i understand about the cheating but there surely have to come up with a way to stop teammates from the same party chat joining other side example if your mates team is full it should just not allow you to join the game i did agree when i first heard about restricted party chat but since ive played mw2 most of the people ive played with have been very abusive rude and just annoying so infinity need to put this in place if 1 player joins his mate in a game he should not be able to be opposite side if he cannot join on the same side he should not be allowed to play that same game

maybe IW should focus on their game types. actually starting a game the user selects. 3rd person tactical isn't 18 player free-for-all on rust. BIG TIME FAIL IW, not nearly as bad as treyarch, but cutting it close.
