Infinity Ward invaded by Activision security (Update) photo

Some very sinister goings-on are happening at Infinity Ward. According to inside sources, a number of security personnel have appeared at Infinity Ward's offices unannounced, at Activision's behest. In a very tense atmosphere, "bouncer-types" have been standing outside the studio and have not been telling a worried staff why they're there.

"Everyone is on edge," says an anonymous employee. "We just wanna make games."

Infinity Ward studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West are said to have been meeting with Activision this morning and have not been seen by anybody else at IW since. Apparently, people at Infinity Ward are "freaked out" by the disturbances. It's being said that the situation isn't violent, but that things have been "tense" between the studio and publisher for a while.

Right now, we know nothing about the scenario but we will keep you updated. So far, this is looking very, very strange indeed.

[Update: It looks like West, at least, is out of a job at Infinity Ward. He recently updated his LinkedIn profile, indicating that his position as "President/Game Director/CCO/CTO" at the studio is "past" experience from January 2001 to March 2010, and his most recent Facebook status update reads, "Jason West is drinking. Also, no longer employed."

An Activision SEC report filed earlier today mentions the apparent origin of this story:

The Company [Activision] is concluding an internal human resources inquiry into breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward. This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation.

Sounds rather damning, doesn't it? It would appear that West is one of the two employees. Presumably, Zampella is the other -- though that remains unconfirmed at this juncture. --Samit]

Activision is imprisoning IW at the office until an update for MW2 is released, changing every avatar in the game to a very naked Bobby Kotick.

Anybody else LOL at the "we just wanna make games" comment?
I can imagine some scrawny guy saying that to one of those Acti-goons and the rest of the IW crew watch as he is dragged around the corner and his screams grow loud and slowly die out.

Awesome.

Maybe Kotick realized the employees still had money in their wallets, and decided to take that too.

Maybe it's defense against the throngs of pissed off MW2 players.

Maybe it's defense against the Russians.

That last one seems likely.

Is it bad if I legitmately believe they're receiving threats from disgruntled gamers and that's what has prompted this action?

Also, what moop said. The news today was slow but whatever news trickled through has been batshit insane. We don't really get days like this very often in gaming.

My first thought was that this might be an publicity stunt, but as was mentioned by Nolan South, I have no idea whatsoever what it could be a stunt for. Plus, even if Infinity Ward refused outright to do another Modern Warfare (or even another Call of Duty game), I doubt that Activision would be so stupid as to, say, fire them.

I am at a total loss.

Sounds like one of two things:
A) something leaked before a planned announcement. Gizmodo had an article on similar behavior at Apple: http://gizmodo.com/5427058/apple-gestapo-how-apple-hunts-down-leaks

B) Restructuring. IW heads get isolated to prevent a potential scene, Activision honchos come in after to lay out the new orders.
