I've given Square Enix a bit of a ribbing now and then for its constant remakes and whoring of Final Fantasy VII, but when Squeenix does something right, it does something damn right. While other companies (which shall remain nameless) claim it takes months upon months to localize, the house of Final Fantasy has announced that its latest RPG, Infinite Undiscovery, will get a simultaneous release date of September 2nd.

"With the simultaneous release of Infinite Undiscovery, Square Enix is entering an exciting new period of delivering great gaming experiences to our fans all around the world at the same time, creating new global communities," stated Square Enix. "This is something that we have aimed to do for a long time and we look to continue to deliver worldwide gaming experiences across all platforms well into the future."

Far be it from me to discourage you from this noble ambition, lads. Infinite Undiscovery may have a ridiculous name, but the collaboration between Squeenix and tri-Ace promises good things for JRPG nuts. Be sure to check the above, newly released trailer as well. This should be a hot one for fans of all things turn-based, and unlike most games in the genre, we can all enjoy it on the same day. Everyone wins!

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the main villain there is voiced by the guy who does Zhang He in Dynasty Warriors.

This sadly makes me even more interested in it.

I was unsure about this game, but the trailer has me interested. I'll most likely end up buying it. I'm still not the biggest fan of the name though.

As a fan of Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto(to an extent), I must admit I'm attracted to the fact that they loudly announce their attacks.

i hope those aren't the final voices... the acting is pretty bad and that lead character sounds very annoying. i like the idea of calling out the attacks, but those voices. sounds painfully bad (looks awesome, though).

INNUENDO DIVE! (yes, I know 2 people said it before me, but that name deserves an infinite number of reminders)

I think with voice acting on games that are developed in Japan, it should be standard to include the original voices with subtitles. Those voices just don't seem all that great...

Either that or they can take out words altogether and just leave grunting and shit.

The visuals looks good but the voice acting suffers as badly as ever.
Urashima's Avatar
Urashima at 05/21/2008 23:53
God I hope this has a Japanese Voice track and subtitles. Seriously, these voices sound about as bad as Star Ocean: Second Story's did. I don't want to go through the game expecting the main character to say, "Crawd has advanced forward! Heh."

Other than that, yay for tri-Ace news. Give me SO:FD damn it.
naia-the-gamer's Avatar
naia-the-gamer at 05/22/2008 00:03
@Urashima:

No kidding. It should be a rule for all Japanese games that have voice acting: add the option to either turn it off or have the original Japanese voice actors. Where do they hire these people?

Aside from that, this looks pretty awesome.
Hamsizzla's Avatar
Hamsizzla at 05/22/2008 00:40
lol no. The voice acting is horrid, even in the battles. JRPG's(to me) are all about the story, environment and the characters. Combat can stay JRPG for all I care. <3 Lost Odyssey

Agreed. Games like this should have the original voice actors in their native language + subtitles.

It always sounds so much better, the voice actors inflection always seems better.

Eh, jRPGs living or dying on their plots, this looks like a pass to me. Between the archtypical young teenager main character, his girlfriend, the malevolent psychopath antagonist, the brief flash of the twin sisters who are undoubted as annoying as the brats from Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata, etc it looks like it's going to be at least 90% the same as 90% of the rest of the jRPG market. Shame because the FF XII-esque field/battle environments look pretty good. Would it be so bad for developers to try and write an original plot or fans to desire one?

Hmmm, I'd say the lack of a good RPG...or any rpg? aside from Elder Scrolls on the PS3 is my biggest complaint. My wife and I love a good PRG and man...we don't want to buy a third console, but Christmas may see us having to buy an xbox 360. :*(

Woah.. a Squee JRPG ONLY for the 360? Square Enix, you TRAITOR!! It wasn't enough thet Sakaguchi and Uematsu bailed out to M$ with Mistwalker, was it? You forgot your roots... waitaminit... they backstabbed The Big N and moved to Sony for FFVII so i guess they do have a history of bailing out..

WHAT'S NEXT SQUEE? FFXIII and Versus XIII only on the 360? The fanboys will eat their heart out! All hell'll break loose!!!
Joseph Leray's Avatar
Joseph Leray at 05/22/2008 09:11
@solarmystic -- they don't have a history of "bailing out." They have a history of putting their games on consoles with large install bases. So that they make money. They have a history of being good businessmen.

As far as this game goes ... I'm on the fence. I don't like the character design, and the story looks generic as balls, and the voice acting is spotty. On the other hand -- the combat looks fast-paced and fluid, the environment looks lush and appealing, and you get to ride a Red Panda.

This is great because, while I don't honestly expect FFXIII to release simultaneously in Japan and the US, maybe they can cut the usual 6-9 month localization time down to 3 months or less.

Then again, Square likes to release the FF games around the holidays in the US regardless of when they come out in Japan so even if a simultaneous worlwide launch is possible for Spring/Summer '09 they'll probably still hold it back in the US until October/November.
