inFAMOUS gets no English voice track in Europe photo

Sucker Punch has today revealed that the European release of inFAMOUS will not be shipping with an English voice track in certain parts of Europe. While the UK will obviously be getting an English language version, it seems that Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands will have no option. The English language version will itself only contain Portuguese and Russian voice options.

This may well prove an unpopular move, as evidenced by reactions already appearing on the Sucker Punch forums. The forums are down at the moment, but the move was not greeted with cheers, especially due to the fact that Dutch gamers speak English very widely and the language is considered a huge driving force in their country's game market.

Apparently, the decision to carve out the language options was due to a request by SCEE. There will likely be a huge European civil war now, so thanks for that, Sony.

Importing from within the EU is free, just import a UK copy if you need the language

Um...why? It's unlikely the game is using the whole 25GB.

Maybe the game is so HUGE it can't fit all of the different audio tracks on one disc?

Sony needs to develop Green-Ray Right away!

Translating games into any language other than Japanese and English NEEDS TO STOP.

Seriously, it's a waste of time and disc space. I'd NEVER play a VG in my native language and I don't see why this needs to be done at all.

Multiple language tracks was one of the best parts of uncharted, why remove them from inFamous. They just lost an extra play through or two with me.

Yep, I'm Dutch and this sealed the deal for me: I'm getting Prototype instead of this. It's not that I don't like my native language, it's just that the Netherlands hardly contain any decent voice-actors, and most localisation is extremely sloppy anyway.

It's an odd split, certainly. But then PS3 games are region free, so if you don't want to speak your mother language, or are an ex-pat there are imports.

Still an odd choice, given that a Blu-Ray should certainly be able to store all of them anyway.

Dear god, this is insane, haha XD

As a Dutch gamer, i can verify that many gamers in the Netherlands can speak, read and write english fluently. So this move is just plain bullshit. Portuguese and Russian? What the FUCK!?

Also, I really dislike Dutch Translations of games. I mean, I played Beyond Good and Evil in Dutch, and, although the gameplay was really cool, I couldn't get into the story because of the bad voice acting. Stupid Dutch celebs talking like they just woke up on a lazy sunday morning, it was devoid of emotion. And the translation of games into Dutch is just horrible and wrong. Sometimes, it's really, really bad. Like in Viva Pinata, they translated Orange (the fruit) in Oranje (the name for the color orange in Dutch). That's the kind of crap I'm talking about.

I'm Dutch, and this is 100% true. I NEVER want to have to listen to the Dutch voice acting in games. No one in this god-forsaken country can voice act to save their life.

Dutch really isn't suited for this kind of thing. Plus, I always feel that if it needs to be dubbed in dutch it's meant for children. Damn you, cable t.v. you.
I mean I don't know how the german and french gamers feel about this, seeing as they dub a lot of movies etc. into their native tongues, but I believe we dutch simply don't go for this kind of thing. I simply can't take something like a videogame, have a dutch written or voiced story and take it serious in any kind of way.

Another thing: is this only dealing with the voice tracks? How about all the written aspects?

@ lvl54spacemonkey

That makes sense. I mean, Valve increased all its UK pricing to make pounds equal to USD even when the exchange rates were different, to increase revenue from UK and/or Euro-paying customers.

If SCEE gets a larger cut by having its customers import the UK version, that's completely understandable, even if a bit of a dick move.

Seeing as I live in the US and am thus isolated from this debacle, I do support efforts to encourage importing, because it may lead to people importing games like [i]Demon's Souls. Gaming globalization may lead to all of us gamers acquiring Tears to Tiara, a very worth cause.

They probably found that logistically it costs less to join Dutch, German and French together as it would be easier to ship to retailers around that area. Interesting that they added Portuguese to the English version, as a large part of the Portuguese gamers import it from the UK. But, with that said, just like the Dutch, unless you are a kid (majority of the PS3 user base here) or an idiot, most people will play it in English.

Another problem for Dutch voice actor pool is so limited that odds are likely that you'll have heard the very same voices in these dubbed video games many times before in cartoons like Pokémon or going even further back to the 80s.

And the last thing you want is the female lead sounding exactly like Misty. =p

I've seen this happen before, the 360 version of The Simpsons in Spain only has Spanish and Italian.

Maybe the vocal tracks for all European languages are too much for one DVD?

Yeah, it happens quite often that different languages don't make it onto the disc because of space limitations.

But this is Blu-Ray we're talking about. THE FUTURE OF THE OPTICAL MEDIUM.

I'm Dutch Jim and you're statement about the Dutch is totally accurate. We're a trade nation and so most people are reasonably proficient in English compared to other countries. Dutch don't prefer their language as much as the Germans or French do, we actually try and borrow as much english words as we can! :-P

I was SO hyped for this and now I am seriously bummed, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING ? Ubisoft screwed us over with Beyond Good and Evil without the English VO-track and Rare too with Banjo Kazooie - Boutjes en Moertjes (yeah it's Dutch, it's pronounced "B'ulls....")

This is a message to all publishers, just because SOME (not all) people in certain countries I won't name but start with Fra want their own VO track is OK, but at LEAST give us the option of an english VO, it's a Blu-Ray disc for f' sake! Even Heavenly Sword had like a gazillion language tracks. And please no more game delays for Europe because of extra language add-ins, please.

I'm sorry for the rant but stuff like this REALLY gets on my nerves.
