inFamous about quality and not length: Three-minute-long campaign confirmed! photo

Whenever a developer starts espousing the fact that its game is about quality and not length, you can guarantee that the game will not be long. Sadly, the quality part of the conversation doesn't carry with it the same assurances. This is how our industry works.

inFamous developer Sucker Punch is doing some prep work ahead of the game's release, making sure we're all aware that this open world game will be far from a drawn out affair.

"Look at God of War -- it is an excellent game, an instant classic, and it's only like seven hours long," claims creative director Nate Fox. "GTA IV is 30 hours long, and people wanted more? That just tells you how excellent that game is. It seems to me that it's not about length, but about quality. And because I love both of those games, I hope that developers never try to shoot for a long game, but instead for the most fun they can pack onto the disc - at any length. That's what we're doing for inFamous."

Yeah ... it is now confirmed that inFamous is short, and not confirmed that inFamous is high quality. This is how our industry works.

Fortunately, the game at least looks fun, despite being somewhat generic in terms of aesthetic and premise. Fox also promises that the game will come packing Trophies, claiming Sucker Punch would be "jackasses not to support them," since they are "videogame crack."

Sucker Punch are now drug dealers. This, also, is confirmed.

So it's like Crackdown with some more powers and less length? :)

Not really a big deal if they make a lot of fun missions, especially since GTAIV had so little of those.

I'm really excited for this game. Mainly because I was a HUGE fan of Rocket Robot on Wheels and the Sly series. Sure they didn't do anything groundbreaking, but they did everything extremely very well. Lets hope they continue with the solid game design that I've grown to love from the developer.

This has now moved from my buy list to my rental list. I don't care how pretty a game is or hows cool it looks. If it takes less time to beat than I work in a single freakin shift, then it isn't worth $60 of my hard earned cash.

A Games Quality determines if it'll be bought.

A Games Quantity determines how soon after release, it will be bought.

The longer the game, the sooner I'll get it, provided it's good. Mirrors Edge is the same. I really want to get it, but I'm finding it difficult to justify £35-40 on a 6 hour game, time trials or no.

Am I the only one that doesn't mind a short game every now and then? I guess I can see for some if you paid $60 for a game, you'd want more out of it. To me, thats what Gamefly is for. Short games give me a quick and easy break from other longer drawn out games.

I also try to tell girls it's about the "quality" and not the "length".

Id rather have a quality game over a long game anyday!! Take Gears 2 for example, its short but f-ing amazing!!

I like GTA4 but it did start to get boring towards the end, if it was 3/4 the lenght id have enjoyed it more!

I don't mind a short game. I do mind game's that are so lacking in content that I can complete them in one sitting, in my opinion that isn't £40 well spent at all.

And that's why Mirror's Edge went from a purchase to a rental, 5-6 hours to complete it? No thanks.

I'm with Timmeh.

I do want this game to be good though.

As long as it is a COMPLETE game, length doesn't really matter.

Being a little harsh here, I think. Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog have not disappointed me with a game so far, and I'm pretty sure this won't change anything. Being their first next gen game out the door, I'm sure they're nervous about getting it right the first time.

Besides, they're constantly competitive with the other two companies, so I'm sure they want to come out strong.

Relatively short, high quality are the realm of price drops (God of War II, RE4) or bundle packs (The Orange Box).

umm I prefer quality over length. I got bored of GTA4 15 hrs in it, yet to this day, I don't mind playing the first metal slug over and over and over....Hell I preferred Saints row 2 over GTA4. I just hope this game is fun too. It looks like it
