Cave Story took one man five years to create, and it shows. Absolutely everything about the game is so polished, so perfect, that only years of dedication and hard work could possibly have gotten it to the level of -- to borrow a word from Concelmo's vocabulary -- amazing-ness you see in the final product.
The music is great, the graphics are fantastic, the level design is occasionally confusing but ultimately wonderful...there's literally nothing not to like in Cave Story.
And even if you're going to compare it to Metroid or Castlevania -- which, considering its huge, quasi-nonlinear maps and upgradable weapons, you might as well -- it still has a much stronger story than either of those two games could ever hope to achieve.
Without going into too much detail, Cave Story essentially throws you into the shoes of a nameless, red-hat-wearing protagonist, and puts you in the middle of a civil war between combat bunnies and evil robots. And demons. On your quest, you'll meet many memorable characters and experience a few story twists and turns that you'd never expect from a game this cutesy-looking. Characters die, secret identities are revealed, and you'll ultimately get a hell of a lot more out of the narrative than you might have ever assumed possible.
Unusually effective story aside, however, you'll be playing Cave Story for the gameplay -- and boy, is there a lot of it. It took me about twelve hours to finish the game on my first go, which is motherfucking insane for a free indie title.
As you progress through the game, you'll get different upgrades to your different weapons. Blasting enemies makes them drop gold experience chips, which, when collected, help level up whichever weapon you're wielding. Each weapon (blaster, missile launcher, flame launcher, and others) can be upgraded three levels, at which point you become a gunslinging God. Take some damage, however, and your weapon level will decrease (along with some of your health), forcing you to scour the world for experience chips once again.
Cave Story's weapon upgrade system, while simple, really adds a hell of a lot to the game. You're constantly fighting to max out all your weapons, but you never feel totally invulnerable; even when everything's at its highest possible level of badassity (a level three machine gun, when fired at the ground, actually works as a de facto jetpack), a few stray projectiles can still knock your main blaster all the way from level three to level one, where it's no more effective than a squirt gun. Cave Story allows the player to constantly teeter on the fench between godlike power and total weakness, keeping you in a constant state of suspense and forcing you to play wisely.
I find it very, very hard to describe my feelings for Cave Story, simply because it does so many things so goddamn well. This isn't Minubeat, where I can point out how enjoyable a single mechanic is, nor is it Aquaria, which, while flawed in some respects, still entertains in a myriad of other ways. This is Cave Story, and it is perfect. The boss battles (yes, there are boss battles) are difficult but rewarding, the controls are wonderfully responsive, the story is far better than it has any right to be, and the whole package has such love and care put into it that it's goddamn impossible not to be completely won over by its charms.
I'm rambling; there's simply too much to say. Cave Story is just too goddamned good. Just download it (there's a Mac version, too), and you'll see what I mean.
Cave Story FTW.
Don't forget the absolutely incredible music
Yeah, that was quite the amazing game. Getting through that thing gave me a good feeling inside. ^_^
Months after beating it though I heard that there's several endings depending on some little things you do. Blew my mind, because now I'll have to download it again, try to remember what I did, and get the other endings.
Well put my friend. Cave Story was freaking epic! I think I'm going to go home and play through it all again...
Props to the fan who translated this game for us Occidentals as well. You know, the one whose name escapes me.
I still haven't beaten it. I got to the uberboss a while ago then never finished it, so I redownloaded it on this brand new laptop and started over and now I'm near the end again and it is hard.
Also, it only took 2 comments for Rev's prediction to come true, haha.
DID YOU EVER READ MY BLOG ABOUT JONNY GREENWOOD (from Radiohead) PLAYING THIS GAME?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Rev, you are the fucking man.
To anyone who enjoys the music (which should be pretty much everyone :D) check out the Cave Story Remix Project. It's free and features remixes by a whole slew of artists. Grass stains, Ball of Ballos and Welcome home will blow your mind.
Cave Story is easily the best free game I've ever played (as far as I can remember, anyway).
Ding! Toast!
I played this non-stop over a weekend, it's so damn good. Too damn good, perhaps? Evil.
@ Holyetheline:
It's amazing, this game. It's like if Game Freak made Metroid instead of R&D1. I think I've even said that before. I did say that before, but it still applies.
Lengthy?? I definitely don't think so. The game could have been more upbeat. It was a little too serious for me.
Love this game, but i never was able to beat a certain boss in the labyrinth.
I've been meaning to play it on my psp.
Cave Story is a fantastic game, and an inspiration to anyone who dreams about making a game themselves. I have only one problem with it(not to be a blogwhore), but it's pretty minor in the grand scheme of the game's overall awesomeness.
.....fuck yeah.
This game looks like the shit
BEST GAME EVER :)
There should be an option to quote everyone's posts and add I agree to the end.
I started to play this 2 years ago, then came the promises of a PSP version
and I waited
and I still am
cause I am a gigantic moron
so I wait....
Cave Story is, without a doubt, one of the most polished, lengthy, thorough, and downright FUN games I've played for PC in recent years. It's so good, I don't think it qualifies as Indie. Seriously.
It's perfectly at home on the PSP. I played it more than any of the PSP titles that were released in recent memory.
Does anyone know if there is a way I could get this to play on my modded Xbox (for media center, not to be a pirate and such. I can never find anything about homebrew and such on he ol modded original, all anyone talks about is pirating retail titles.
Just want to reiterate, for those out there who doubt this title:
Cave Story = Fuck yes!
Why wasn't this written about sooner?
Also have you heard about the DS port? I hear it's going along swimmingly.
<3 cave story!!!
Let me also recommend that you use the font Press Start K instead of Courier New. You'll need to do a little hex editing but it will look so much nicer having a consistent era-accurate font.
that secret Hell level is traumatizingly awesome
An amazing game. But I still can't make it through Hell, so I'm sad.
This has to be one of my favorite features on Dtoid.
Oh mighty Reverand Anthony, please open my eyes to the wonderousness that is independent game studios so that I may bask in their glory.
oh and saving that girl from drowning is one of the most gratifying moments in video game history
I downloaded it a while ago, and I still am playing it to this day.
@windexwindex
Could we not post spoilers in the comments without at least a bit of warning? That's pretty shitty of you.
Gasp! A Mac version! I love you Anthony!

Cave Story on Xbox
Cave Story's fun. But I do have a suggestion for IN #7...
Not owning Cave Story is a crime against humanity.
@9tendo
Thanks. Though I can't seem to figure out exactly how to get it to work. Oh well.
One of my favourite games of all time. I'm just a sucker for Metroid/Castlevania design- which it perfects. Love the music, story and most of all the characters and it's charm. Hopefully Pixel will continue to make games, as from Cave Story, anything he makes is/will be pure gold.
<spam> Best. Game. Ever. </spam>
The game is amazing enough, but the fact that one person more or less alone made it, regardless of the length (also, that he stuck with it for five years) of dev time is freaking unbelievable. I remember when this exploded all over the interwebs, I downloaded it after a month (I know, I had my doubts), and played it over winter break. Shortly after finishing it, I found out about the hidden "level" and took the next year to finish it. What a gratafying feeling to do something so difficult. It has since been out-difficulted by La Mulana, IWBTG and such, but it's still something awesome to have done. Heck, I even went through the trouble to rig it to work under linux at the computers at school, even if the translation patch didnt. I got it on the PC and PSP, and now all I really need is to figure out how to get it to run on the dreamcast and I'll be in heaven. (for some reason, Dreamcast makes everything better :P)
I loved this game, hell even the graphics rock, the style is perfect. I was SOOO happy there was a Mac version.
Pretty much EVERY free moment I had for 3 days went into this game. Also, plugging in a USB pad makes this game even more awesome.
@ Petrie
Those aren't really spoilers, they're more like hints for those who play the game and only see the worst ending
@windexwindex
Wouldn't it still make sense to mention not to read if you haven't played the game yet? I know I for one am now disappointed that the surprise of a moment like that has been ruined already.
@Petrie
I haven't gotten to that point, but it really doesn't spoil anything. Okay, someone's drowning and I can save them. It tells me nothing, apart from the obvious.
The game is a lot of fun. And free is always good. Thanks, Rev.
My little brother beat Balos, I watched him try to get through the cave leading to him and i was like wtf....
This game is amazing.
This game made me buy a 20 dollar USB game controller from K-mart. I have no regrets. Period.
@sharplessem
It tells me they can be saved. Were I to play through without knowing that, and have them die, the emotional impact would be much greater than me now being aware I can simply go back to a save file and rescue them.
Fair enough. Different strokes... Still, I would instinctively try to save her anyway, so it doesn't spoil too much for me personally.
