I was going to retract my statement from last week and proclaim that this, is, in fact, my second favorite indie zombie game ever, but that's kinda dumb: rating your favorite indie zombie games is like trying to pick favorites amongst your children.

Still, though, if I were making a list of my favorite zindie games, Urban Dead would still be very, very near the top of that list. It's a free, sorta-text-based zombie MMO that is nowhere near as boring as the phrase "free, sorta-text-based zombie MMO" might initially lead you on to believe.

You can play as a zombie or a human and though I'll hate you for joining a side which will inevitably doom mankind (indeed, on an infinite timeline, the zombies will mathematically have to win), the zombies are just as fun to play as the humans.

And the best part? It only takes five or ten minutes to play each day, so you can come back to it over and over throughout a few months! It's as pleasant as a regular MMO, with all that "nnng gotta level up I need to find phatter lewt this is so awesome" vibe but without the necessity of investing hours upon hours into the gameplay.

Also, there are zombies.

Play it here, or hit the jump for more.

To explain what I mean when I say that Urban Dead is "sorta text-based," consider that the average Urban Dead screenshot looks like this:

erereJ

That big area in the top left is the city map. Urban Dead takes place in a 100 x 100 grid, each section of the grid representing a location. Your view is always limited to a 3x3 survey of your surrounding locations. So, it's sort of text-based in that you're not looking at pictures of buildings, but at the same time you won't have to be jotting down maps like you'd have to if you found a maze in Zork or something. You'll never feel like you don't know where you are or where you're going, which is much more than I can say for most text-based games.

On your first time through the game (when it asks you to choose your class, pick Fireman -- trust me, it'll make it a lot easier to level up and you can unlock all the skills no matter which class you initially choose), you may find the world initially overwhelming. This is a good thing.

Quite simply, there's a lot of ground to cover, a lot of strategies to uncover (if a building is "very strongly barricaded" and there's a lot of people inside, don't barricade it any further), and all sorts of things to do. Some people join big human or zombie groups and perform raids on the opposing sides. Some humans actually act as spies for the zombie side. Some players have deemed themselves Bounty Hunters of the Wastlands, and endeavor to roam the entire map, killing trolls and griefers who have been publicly complained about in the official wiki.

Admittedly, your desire to continue playing will probably be somewhat diminished after you fully level up your human or zombie character, but that takes a long time -- at least a month or two. And even after that, you can always get revived (if you're a zombie) or jump out of a building (if you're a human) and experience how the other half lives.

And besides, nothing can compare to the odd feeling of minimalist satisfaction one experiences from spending twenty action points bludgeoning a (player-controlled) zombie to death, finally being rewarded with the message, "you attack the zombie for five damage. It dies." It's indescribably fun to wipe out hordes of the text-based undead after spending so many action points foraging for weapons and items, but hell if I didn't just log back into my account a few days ago just to try out temporary (un)life as a zombie.

Anyway, play it. It's really easy to get into, takes very little time to play each day (every action takes a single action point, you can have 50 action points max, and the action points refill at the rate of one every half hour), and it's damned pleasantly addicting for the first month or so. Try it

I played this for a long time and loved it. If you play, definitely download the UDtoolbar plugin for Firefox, which includes a graphical update. Makes it much neater and easier to use. The metagame community is also very impressive, with groups of survivors staking out territories to upkeep and hordes of zombies roaming the city together.

I'll leave prospective zombie players with two words to remember: Mall Tour.

Heretic:
"Homebrew" is a specific term used to define games developed for existing consoles that usually don't include user-created content. So, if I managed to make a game for the PSP, that'd be a homebrew game because the PSp is a readily-avialable console.

An indie game is just any game made by someone who isn't a corporate-owned development studio. Or something.

I'll give it a shot, but goddamn a full fledged zombie MMO would be spectacular. Like, Left 4 Dead with thousands of people...mixed with Dead Rising....oh yes...

But doesn't this boil down to that if you WANT to play for hours on end, you can't?

Urban Dead has always been one of those things that I always knew existed, but never bothered with it. Now I don't think I can ignore it anymore, since I've seen it someplace reputable now.

I haven't play in ages! I have two characters that play on opposite sides of the town lest I be accused of cheating. One medic (cause I care), and one bad ass fireman zombie killing machine, that is until I run out of action points outside and "wakeup" dead. This is a fun game, I just might activate my characters again! I even donated to have unlimited hits.

I used to play a few years back, had a few characters with maxed abilities for zombies and humans too. Unfortunately it lost its appeal after a while when the class updates started to slow. I tried getting back into it but the odds seemed to have been so heavily tipped towards the zombies, it wasn't even worth it. Just finding other survivors and barricading enough to survive till the next day became far too difficult. Then getting revived was even more of a pain. Even if you were alive there wasn't much to do without getting hunted down by a mob. Goddamn flak jacket wearing zombies...

The meta-game was a mixed bag though. Working in groups to fortify/destroy malls was great but as it got more popular PKers and zerg rushing was a bit of a problem. If Daris and Something Awful means anything to you you probably know what I"m talking about.

Fuck Urban Dead, it started out as a decent little survival thing and then it became a chore to play due to all the PK'ers, it didn't help that they unbalanced the game by overpowering the zombies and making the humans worthless, seriously if I make a military character or a cop I should miss 5 shots out of a 6 bullet clip against a fucking zombie.

From what I've heard the Pking is just as rampant so its pointless to try it.

And Daris and somethingawful does sound familiar to me, I saw the Urban SA topic, they have the biggest zombie crowd in the game and they love to grief the shit out of people, being in a good stronghold is pretty much an invitation to get killed.

I played Urban Dead for a while but then completely forgot about it. It was fun to play though.

THE PROBLEM WITH URBAN DEAD IS TWO things it is to easy to reach level cap and the zombie horde that sweeps through the city and ganks each suburb one by one (but I come back to it every 4-7 month).

I like the fact that you can't play this for hours on end. I dislike the fact that I'm level 41 with nearly 8,000 experience and have absolutely nothing to spend it on. There's really no reason to play the game anymore.

Yeah I maxed out about 3 characters before I stopped playing, they should add in new skills or something. Still a great game, and free no less.

Hells, I enjoy this game. I've been playing it for about a month though, so that may change once I max some characters out.

Man, I never find anything, but I am so lucky that I manage to not get kiled in a building pretty close to buildings filled with zombies.
