Review: Grim Fandango

Grim Fandango didn't need a remaster as much as it needed a re-release. Many, myself included, have found it difficult to track down a copy to play. We've had an entire digital catalog--GOG.com--devoted to getting good, old g...

Ghost Song is an unsettling Metroid-like adventure

Nintendo may not be working on a new 2D Metroid, but we've got creators like Matt White and Tom Happ out there filling that void with Ghost Song and Axiom Verge, respectively. I come away feeling like we're in good hands eve...

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's new downloadable character is out this Tuesday

The inaugural PAX South is wrapping up today, and Gearbox's panel just ended. We heard about the plans with Homeworld earlier, but the studio's cash cow for the past several years has been the Borderlands series, so of course...

Review: Gravity Ghost photo
Review: Gravity Ghost
by Darren Nakamura

[Disclosure: Ashly Burch, one of the voice actors for Gravity Ghost, previously created video content for Destructoid. As always, no relationships, personal or professional, were factored into the review.]

Traditional ghost lore states that spirits remain in the physical realm when they have unfinished business. That trope applies to Gravity Ghost's protagonist Iona. Less common are ghost stories about soaring between tiny planetoids to collect stars. So that's new.

It has been described in Internet shorthand as "like a 2D Super Mario Galaxy," but past the physics of elliptical planetary motion there is not a lot of similarity. Where Mario keeps on his toes to avoid traps and enemies, Iona's journey is a more zen-like experience of exploration and self-discovery. Gravity Ghost touches on some more serious themes and is more than just a platformer with unusual physics.

Gravity Ghost is pretty so I took a bunch of screenshots

I just finished playing through Gravity Ghost (expect a review later today), and as I tend to do with less action-focused titles or sequences, I took a lot of screenshots along the way. Not only does Gravity Ghost's planet-or...

My brain can't handle this 'absurdly high-speed arcade shmup-like'

Not ten seconds into watching this video for Aerobat, a shoot-'em-up about "reckless self-endangerment," I fired off a staff email to call dibs on posting it. Holy shit! Gimme. Your pilot's ship doesn't have enough power to ...

Gravity Ghost story trailer hints at protagonist Iona's origin

In Gravity Ghost, the player controls Iona, who is a colorful ghost. The story is told through flashbacks, with scenes showing that Iona was not always a ghost. My scientist deductive reasoning tells me this: at some point s...

Mega Man composer working on a point-and-click space shooter photo
Mega Man composer working on a point-and-click space shooter
by Steven Hansen

Starr Mazer is a mix of point-and-click adventure game and side-scrolling space shooter, "featuring dynamic story module system for massive replayability, a deep voice-acted story, and beautiful pixel art." It took a few reads to understand this is a "deep, voice-acted story" and not a story voiced by Keith David.

It looks pretty sweet, though I'm more into the point-and-click half. The PC/Mac/Linux game is going up on Kickstarter in a couple of days. Ahead of that, the team has announced that Mega Man and Mighty No. 9 composer Manami Matsumae would be joining the music team, which includes a number of guest artists, including Gunpoint's Ryan Ike.

Upgrade Complete 3mium pokes fun at awful free-to-play games
