E3: Check vs. Mate offers a new spin on Chess photo
E3: Check vs. Mate offers a new spin on Chess
by Conrad Zimmerman

TopWare Interactive showed me this strange little game, already released in Europe as "Battle vs. Chess." It's been renamed to "Check vs. Mate" for the North American release to avoid potential conflicts with Interplay's Battle Chess, which is probably a smart move considering the similarities to that classic game.

There's more going on here than just a simple Chess game, however. TopWare is claiming that Check vs. Mate features the most sophisticated chess engine to date, based upon Fritz! 11 chess algorithm software.

Two Worlds II UK retail release does not seem likely

Two Worlds II has seen a bumpy ride when it comes to its UK release, which was previously pushed months down the line of the mainland European release. Despite being stuck with an English-voiced mainland release if I wanted t...

Allegations, sleaze, & treachery: A tale of Two Worlds photo
Allegations, sleaze, & treachery: A tale of Two Worlds
by Jim Sterling

To say Topware has been suffering from bad PR lately is to put it lightly. A number of anonymous sources have accused the publisher of attempting to influence review scores by threatening to blacklist any outlet that gives Two Worlds II less than a 7/10.

If true, this paints a very grim picture of the company in an industry that already comes under fire for questionable PR practices. Topware has responded to, and denied, many of the accusations thrown its way, but there has been an increasing amount of these accusations from all corners of the business.

This isn't the first time I've personally heard Topware's name in association with shady behavior. Last night, however, we uncovered a list of allegations that would make even Eidos look like Jesus Christ.

Two Worlds II's Sordahon does contract negotiations

I would expect that the process of hiring a celebrity to be in your videogame has the potential to be very frustrating indeed. Take Sordahon from Two Worlds II as an example. Here, the people at Southpeak are doing ever...

Two Worlds II will surprise you in a good way photo
Two Worlds II will surprise you in a good way
by Funktastic

As some of you may know, I won a little contest that sent me to PAX East. It was a very enjoyable weekend and besides the tons of fun I had with my fellow Dtoiders checking out upcoming releases, getting a bunch of swag, and just having a blast causing mayhem, I had an obligation to preview Two Worlds II for Destructoid.

I know a lot of you must be thinking “But Funk! Why would you want to do such a thing when the first was so terrible? I pity you. I don’t want to read this preview since I really didn’t like the first game and my expectations aren’t that high for this one!” Before you all start jumping to conclusions I think some back story about the first game is in order. The people I met with were more than happy to discuss it and I highly suggest you read this preview. Take it from a gamer and a fellow member of the community: I think you may be a lot more surprised than you might expect.

Hit the jump for the full story.
