Five most notorious videogame ripoffs of all-time photo
Five most notorious videogame ripoffs of all-time
by Vito Gesualdi

When I first heard that Electronic Arts was suing Zynga over The Ville, a rather blatant ripoff of EA’s The Sims Social, I was pretty excited to see the outcome. After all, there’s nothing worse than a company whose only business model is to steal the works of small game developers, and given some of The Ville's obvious lifts, it seemed as though EA had a very solid case.

Gamer crafts slave-era tropical plantation in The Sims 3

The work of a bored -- but seemingly quite dedicated -- Sims 3 player has been gaining a lot of attention this week, ever since the fruits of his labor were posted to Reddit. While user-created content in games invariably lea...

New releases: Ni no Kuni arrives at last photo
New releases: Ni no Kuni arrives at last
by Fraser Brown

It's Monday, and that can only mean one thing: it's the beginning of another week of new releases!

And what a great week it is, most notably containing the release of the long awaited Ni no Kuni, Level-5 and Studio Ghibli's sumptuous RPG. Jim's review is now live, and it sounds like an absolutely delightful, if traditional JRPG. Just what the doctor (if I can find my fake medical license) ordered.

In addition, we've got Ron Gilbert and Double Fine's inventive underground adventure, The Cave; the TrackMania-style FPS, ShootMania Storm; Strike Suit Zero, a space combat sim inspired by Colony Wars and Freespace; Croixleura hack-and-slash brawler for PC; an alien-slaying FPS for the Vita, Gun Commando; and a whole bunch more arriving this week.

Blimey, that's a lot of gaming. Anything tickling your fancy?

Review: The Sims 3: Seasons photo
Review: The Sims 3: Seasons
by Joshua Derocher

The Sims series will always have expansion packs. It's part of the experience to slowly add more content to the game. Usually these packs add active content like new town locations, new interactions, or new career paths for your sims. Seasons adds a little bit of this stuff, but it's mostly a passive expansion in that it adds things to the background of the sims' lives.

Seasons mostly does what you would expect. It adds seasons, weather, and holidays to the game. While it's neat to have these features, I'll just come out and say that it's not worth forty bucks.

The Sims 3 adds three decades of junk in next expansion

Prepare for a flashback as The Sims 3 expands with 70's, 80's & 90's Stuff, another add-on pack due out January 22.  I have to admit to my undeniable love for kitschy, seventies furniture designs. If I thought ...

EA suing Zynga over copyright infringement photo
EA suing Zynga over copyright infringement
by Jim Sterling

Electronic Arts has announced that it will be twisting the knife into the beleaguered Zynga by taking it to court -- suing the trouble company over its new social game, The Ville. EA alleges that The Ville is a rip-off of The Sims Social. Man, we knew EA was gunning for Zynga, but they brought out the cannons now.

"The core legal issue is our belief that Zynga infringed copyrights to our game, The Sims Social," wrote EA.  "In legal terms, our claim is that Zynga copied the original and distinctive expressive elements of The Sims Social in a clear violation of the U.S. copyright laws.

"The legal reasons are solid. But for creative teams who feel that their hard work and imaginations have been ripped off, there’s obviously an emotional element too."

The full allegation can be read here, as Maxis manager Lucy Bradshaw attempts to garner sympathy in what can only be described as the villain face-off of the century. Seriously, Electronic Arts versus Zynga. What next? Two pedophiles having a fistfight?
