Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons just came out for Xbox Live Arcade to little marketing and fanfare this past week. We're here to remind you that's it pretty great though, and something worth adding to your XBLA collection.
It all starts innocently enough with a pair of brothers making their way through town. Sure, there's a task at hand, but urgency isn't an issue. It should be, but it isn't. Soaking in the warm glow of the sun and playing with some bunnies feel like more pertinent matters.
Before long, it's not apparent where the siblings are, but it's obvious that they took an unexpected turn toward Crazyville. Thinking back to just a few hours prior, it's remarkable that this is even the same adventure -- how far things have come.
That's when it hits you. Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons isn't about the destination; it's about the journey, cliché be damned. And, oh, what a journey it is.

With the PlayStation 4 launch right around the corner there is much to be excited for. Sony has already knocked most of our socks off with the price; the sexy new DualShock 4 controller; and all the love they're throwing at the indie scene, but there's also a myriad things the next-gen console has in store for us that has gone under the radar.

The console market has become something of a paradox these past few years. Despite total console sales having exceeded 40 million units over the previous generation, and despite a wealth of powerful new IPs, we've witnessed a veritable avalanche of studio closures and cutbacks. The biggest reason for these failings is the current state of traditional games development, which has grown so bloated and inefficient that even historically successful brands can't meet publishers' outrageous sales projections.
One possible countermeasure is a greater focus on digital distribution, although this would require companies to make radical changes to their infrastructure -- hardly an overnight process. But while the bigger publishers are busy splitting resources, trying to address the physical and digital spaces simultaneously, smaller independent developers will be able to quickly capitalize on this relatively new frontier.
Both Sony and Nintendo have recognized the success of indies on the PC and have taken great strides to make their consoles and handhelds as indie-friendly as possible. Indies possess a pioneering spirit that once drove the entire industry, and since they aren't beholden to any panel of investors, they can take the risks that the big boys are too afraid to attempt.
As the major companies fall further out of touch with consumers, indies will be the ones to reinvigorate the market and shape the future of console gaming.

I caught wind of Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons by way of a short teaser trailer a while back (you can find it after the jump) and was digging the art style, but put it out of mind. As its spring release approaches, however, it seems to be picking up steam. After GDC, Mikael Nermark, CEO and President of Starbreeze Studios, and Josef Fares, the Swedish film director helming Brothers, paid us a visit to show off the pleasant-looking game .
The story is minimal and noninvasive. The two brothers, each of whom is controlled by one of the analog sticks, are on a quest. There’s no co-op. Navigating both brothers at the same time is part of the gameplay -- there is a learning curve to it, but it works surprisingly smoothly. What really stands out about Brothers is its tranquilly unfolding atmosphere, abetted by warm art direction and great sound work.
After years of fans asking for a downloadable re-release, Darkstalkers Resurrection didn't place on the list of best-selling PlayStation Network games. Svensson says part of this is due to a lack of promotion but he's working on changing that.
"We've not given up. But I'm disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we've put out on the same platforms," Svensson says on Ask Capcom, "given the frequency and urgency of requests we've had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution. It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we've done."
Svensson continues, clarifying that he is not upset at the fans who continue to support the franchise. We all knew this day was going to come, as fighting games got a shot in the arm in 2009 from Street Fighter IV. The popularity just can't last, it seems, and if it can then re-releases aren't the solution.

Rain is meant to evoke the feeling of fright and wonderment that you might have experienced being lost as a child in an unfamiliar place. It does so by putting you into the transparent shoes of a young boy who has faded into invisibility in a mysterious city. He is lost, as alien to this world as the player. Only in the rain can he be seen -- sort of like Ben Affleck’s vision in that terrible Daredevil movie.
Thing is, nasty beasties also lurk under the pitter patter of raindrops. Like Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. Or Elektra. Also, cool, intimidating monsters.
