Review: The Pinball Arcade photo
Review: The Pinball Arcade
by Maurice Tan

The ever-maturing downloadable space has allowed for some rather niche genres to find their audience. From The Legend of Grimrock to Lone Survivor, players can find new games for their favorite genres for a price that's hard to argue with.

Enter The Pinball Arcade, the latest pinball simulation game by FarSight Studios, who are probably best known for their Pinball Hall of Fame titles.

Zen Pinball 2 headed to PS3 and Vita as a free upgrade photo
Zen Pinball 2 headed to PS3 and Vita as a free upgrade
by Jordan Devore

While Zen Studios continues to pump out more pinball tables for its games, the developer will also work on Zen Pinball 2, a free upgrade to Marvel Pinball and Zen Pinball that's coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita this spring.

The new product, which can be thought of more as a platform than anything else, will be releasing alongside Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles and offer access to 26 different tables at launch. If you own one of the aforementioned games, you'll receive an update that will transfer your purchases into Zen Pinball 2.

By doing so, tables will get updated physics, expanded Trophies, and social functionality with support for Facebook. Did I mention that you only have to pay for content once to get it on both PS3 and Vita? And that these versions have shared global leaderboards, friend challenges, and tournaments? Oh, it's on.

The joy of pinball photo
The joy of pinball
by Chad Concelmo

You walk into an arcade. Whether you just finished playing miniature golf, swinging a bat in the batting cages, or just decided to make your way to one of the few remaining standalone arcades hidden in some random downtown nook, it doesn't matter. You are in an arcade and you are happy.

As you walk around on the gaudy, gloriously retro carpet, the smell of lukewarm pizza and burnt popcorn fills the air. The light of a claw machine reflects off the side of an unpolished token dispenser. Kids run past you, waving long trails of red tickets in their hands, as you make your way to the very back of the cabinet-filled room.

You have one destination in mind.

A pinball machine.

Preview: Marvel Pinball: Vengeance and Virtue photo
Preview: Marvel Pinball: Vengeance and Virtue
by Wesley Ruscher

Pinball has to be one of the hardest hobbies to talk about. On the surface, it's about hitting a metal ball around a slanted table, with some flippers, in the hopes of keeping it from failing down a hole. In reality though, videogames' grandfather hides behind its simplistic exterior an often more robust and deep gaming experience.

To their credit, few (if any) have captured the essence of this once popular pastime in the videogame landscape better than Zen Studios. They've made some truly amazing tables that go far beyond the world of pinball and seamlessly merge it with the digital age. Thankfully, they finally announced the last character for their upcoming Marvel Pinball: Vengeance and Virtue DLC pack, so I can finally share my thoughts on the four new tables that are coming very soon.

Zen Pinball comes to iOS and Android with a free table

New 'Paranormal' Pinball FX2 table free for one week photo
New 'Paranormal' Pinball FX2 table free for one week
by Conrad Zimmerman

Zen Pinball is celebrating a year of success for Pinball FX2 with a little gift for everyone. The brand new "Paranormal" table will be made available for free for one week, October 26th until November 2nd. It looks to be a pretty good table too, judging by the video, with a cool upper play field. All you have to do to get the game is have the free Pinball FX2 client installed on your Xbox 360 and then download the table during the promotional period.

Over the last year, Pinball FX2 has pretty much become my go-to game for when I want a quick break to just vegetate on the couch for a bit. I'm glad to hear that the title is doing well for Zen, as the quality of the content produced for it is of a rather high level and I want them to keep making more.

'Sorcerer's Lair' table next for Pinball FX 2

An evil sorcerer, some children, and a slingshot -- what could possibly go wrong? That's the setup for the Zen Studios' next Pinball FX 2 table, "Sorcerer's Lair," due out on Wednesday, October 12 via download. I appreciate the mix of bright aesthetics and gloomy subject matter, and really like the look of the cellar mission. Give the first screenshots a look, if you would.
