Street Fighter X Mega Man scores one million downloads photo
Street Fighter X Mega Man scores one million downloads

The fan-made, freely distributed, Capcom-backed mashup Street Fighter X Mega Man has crossed one million downloads, according to the game's creator, Seow Zong Hui. If it were to be counted as a full retail release, it would be only the fifth entry in the Mega Man franchise to achieve platinum status.

You can view this news two different ways depending on your level of optimism. On one hand, it could prove that there is still a sizable fanbase jonesing for more Mega Man goodness. On the other hand, it took a free game nearly three months to hit a target that certain paid games hit in much less time.

Back when SF X MM was first revealed, Capcom Senior VP Christian Svenesson said, "[I]f we get a million downloads of [Street Fighter X Mega Man], and certainly I think that's the floor I hope to see -- it's free, it should hopefully do more than that! -- that just helps raise awareness for the brand across the board and creates fertile ground for things to happen regardless of which direction that it kind of comes in." He seems to consider a million as the lowest acceptable performance, but I suppose there's still room for growth as long as the downloads remain active.

Might as well give the experiment a thumbs up, regardless. Let's see if this translates into a renewed effort on Capcom's behalf.

Street Fighter X Mega Man unofficially hits Mac photo
Street Fighter X Mega Man unofficially hits Mac
by Chris Carter

Capcom made the decision to bring Street Fighter X Megaman solely to PCs initially so that they could test the download count -- but despite the fact that they still could have tested it for Mac based systems, they never represented the platform.

As of yesterday however, a fan has brought it upon himself to port the game over to the Mac. The unofficial port is based on the 2.0 version of the game, which has all of the bells and whistles like passwords and the like. There are a few bugs (switch to windowed mode for better output), but it's a good start.

You can grab the .dmg file here.

The Street Fighter X Mega Man update is here photo
The Street Fighter X Mega Man update is here
by Chris Carter

Remember when Capcom released Street Fighter X Mega Man without a number of core features -- like, oh I don't know, a password or a save system?

Well, they had a change of heart, and now you can reap the benefits of fan demand as Street Fighter X Mega Man 2.0 is now out. In addition to a password system, there's also a neat Mega Man style prompt for quitting the game, better gamepad options, and a few other tweaks. I just tried it out and it seems to be working a-okay.

Why not check out my comprehensive guide if you need assistance, and Tony's review if you need help figuring out if it's worth your time?

In case you missed the link above, you can grab the update here (just hit the 2.0 download button).

Street Fighter X Mega Man update dropping on Friday photo
Street Fighter X Mega Man update dropping on Friday
by Tony Ponce

Though Street Fighter X Mega Man was a fairly decent romp, there were quite a few issues that held it back from being as good as it could be. The free "Version 2" update mentioned a couple weeks back will be ready for distribution on Capcom-Unity's Mega Man group page on Friday, and though it doesn't sound like it'll fix all the problems, it ought to address the biggest offenders.

I never bought the logic -- that the game was too short -- behind not including a password function in Street Fighter X Mega Man. With the exception of the very first Mega Man, every single game in the grand overarching franchise has either used passwords or a save feature. Even the short-as-hell, six-stage Dr. Wily's Revenge on Game Boy used friggin' passwords. This oversight has been corrected as of V2.

There is now a confirmation prompt before quitting or resetting the game. I intended to discuss this in my review, but I cut it out and forgot to re-add it later. For those unaware, pressing the ESC or F12 key used to immediately boot you out of the game without warning. Other tweaks include bug-fixing, improved controller support (we won't know by how much until Friday), and buffs to make the M. Bison fight a bit tougher.

Does that sound satisfactory?
