The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct makes NPD's top 10 photo
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct makes NPD's top 10
by Dale North

Yesterday, Hamza popped up and screamed "Told you!" to our staff. And he was right. Not too long ago he said that miserable game The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct would do better than we'd expect it to. In NPD's March 2013 sales data the game ranks number 9 on the list of the top ten best selling games of the month. That's the power of licensing, folks.

Thankfully, that list is topped by a good game, BioShock Infinite. Yes, last month's best and worst games just about bookend the top ten list. While NPD does not release individual game sales numbers, data from Cowen and Company shows that Infinite moved 878,000 copies in March, says GamesIndustry

The rest of the top 10 list is made of new games. NPD says that new release sales were 40 percent better than last year this time, and that they made almost 70 percent more this year.

It was nice to see other strong games like Tomb Raider, God of War: Ascension, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the list. Even underdog Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 made it!

NPD: Hardware rose in Feb, overall sales still poop photo
NPD: Hardware rose in Feb, overall sales still poop
by Tony Ponce

The NPD Group has released game sales data for February 2013, which means it's time to play another exciting round of "good news, bad news"!

Hardware sales have actually risen compared to January, which is even better news considering this past January was a five-week reporting period while February was a four-week period. Xbox 360 naturally took the crown again with 302K consoles moved, but even Wii U and PS Vita managed to increase their average weekly sales by over 40% and 30% respectively. Compared to the pathetic performances by both new machines last month, this would put the Wii U at 66K and Vita above 36K, which is... still kinda terrible, actually.

But hey! The 3DS has finally crossed 8 million units! Which is cool, until you realize that it still has 3 million to go to reach the 10.8 million total in Japan. You know, that tiny country with only 40% of the population of the US? Yeah, what's up with that?

NPD: Wii U sold a paltry 55,000 units in January photo
NPD: Wii U sold a paltry 55,000 units in January
by Tony Ponce

It's no secret that the Wii U is in poor shape. No one is denying that Nintendo has failed to push the Wii U message adequately to either the enthusiast gamer or the mass market. And when Ubisoft moved back Rayman Legends to release alongside the 360 and PS3 versions, I think we all understood deep down that Ubi was nervous about the console's sales potential.

I just don't think anyone could have guessed it was this bad.

Looking at the stats from the January 2013 NPD, Gamasutra reveals that the Wii U during its first three months has sold 38% less than the Wii in the same span of time. Because no hard Wii U numbers we reported, we do a little arithmetic to arrive at a third month total of roughly 55K, lower than any of the previous generation's consoles' worst months with the possible exception of the Wii in the past year. In comparison, the 360 was able to hit a strong 281K.

But before we discuss what exactly this means, let's take a look at what games charted.
