Here's a full playthrough of the second Mighty No. 9 beta stage photo
Here's a full playthrough of the second Mighty No. 9 beta stage
by Chris Carter

The second Mighty No. 9 beta stage focuses on the female No. 2 boss, who is a master of ice and water. In addition to my playthrough of the first stage here, you can also get a better look at the next phase of the beta above in my second playthrough.

I actually liked this level a bit more. While the first stage (No. 5) was a standard romp throughout, I like how No. 2's level mixed things up with a water section as well as an ice portion, and seeing the fire-based No. 1 in the background was a little more interesting than No. 2's appearance in the original beta stage.

My main concern at this point is the art direction, which can look a bit drab in terms of the level design (the two are very similar) and the enemy models themselves, despite the fact that they have great base mechanics. Since this is a beta the full version will no doubt have a bit more flair, but how much flair is yet to be seen.

Sonic / Mega Man: Worlds Collide comic is getting a complete collection

The Sonic / Mega Man: Worlds Collide comic was pretty much everything I expected it to be. It was a perfect combination of two of my childhood icons, and it was enjoyable to read from start to finish. Although there have...

Mega Man 7 is out now on the Wii U Virtual Console

One of the most polarizing Mega Man titles is out now on the Wii U Virtual Console -- Mega Man 7. Not only did it employ a wholly different graphical style, but it also took some pretty neat risks, like the game's ending and the hidden Street Fighter-esque multiplayer mode. Whatever side of the fence you're on, it's nice to have the game finally available to pick up digitally.

Mega Man will be appearing at the Hanayashiki theme park in Japan

Every so often Capcom decides that it's time to parade Mega Man around, reminding us that they used to pump out a ton of good games for him while they sit back and collect royalties. The next really cool not-Mega Man game eve...

Mega Man X5 is out on PSN, X6 release not as likely

Mega Man X5 is out now on the PSN for $5.99 as a PSOne Classic, and will run on your PS3 and Vita. It has some problems, but overall I enjoyed the game quite a bit, especially the kickass soundtrack. X6 on the other hand isn'...

Rockman Xover gets another big bad, the female Oro S

If you have't been following Rockman Xover, the game might not be that great as a Mega Man release, but it has some pretty awesome boss designs. The newest character is no exception -- the "Maiden of Lightning," Oro S. S...

Mighty No. 9 feels great, but the core concepts take some getting used to photo
Mighty No. 9 feels great, but the core concepts take some getting used to
by Chris Carter

Mighty No. 9 is probably one of the most anticipated games of 2015. After a massive Kickstarter, creator Inafune and developers Comcept and Inti Creates have kicked off a long line of products to hype it up, including Mighty Gunvolt and a potential cartoon.

After all that hype though we finally have a chance to play the game. I have to say, it has the feel of a Mega Man game, but a few aspects definitely took some getting used to.

The Mighty No. 9 playable beta launches today
by Chris Carter

If you're interested in Mighty No. 9 and pledged at least $80 to its Kickstarter, check your email today -- you may have gotten a beta key. Redeemable on Steam, this key will allow you to play a single level from an early version of the game, which will show off Mighty No. 9's core mechanics.

Feedback will help shape the final release, and another "level or two" may come to the beta, according to producer Inafune. Stay tuned for later today -- I'll have a full write-up of the beta.

Review: Mighty Gunvolt photo
Review: Mighty Gunvolt

Inti Creates is just full of surprises. First, we had the announcement of a brand new Mega Man-like project that absolutely exploded on Kickstarter. Then we got word that Azure Striker Gunvolt was in production, and was an attempt to recreate the feel of the Mega Man X and ZX titles.

Now, we have a full-on 8-bit loveletter to the NES area in the form of Mighty Gunvolt, which is a free add-on for Striker. Provided that Mighty No. 9 delivers, this is going to be one hell of a retro trifecta.

Review: Azure Striker Gunvolt photo
Review: Azure Striker Gunvolt

If Capcom ever decides that they're done with Mega Man, someone will carry the torch. Whether it's tireless fan creators or the father of the Blue Bomber himself, the Mega Man community is one of the most passionate collectives I've ever seen in the gaming industry.

Not content with rebooting his creation entirely with Mighty No. 9, Inti Creates has crafted a love-letter to Mega Man ZX, and the 8-bit era. If Azure Striker Gunvolt is anything to go by, I hope that passion lives on for quite a while.
