One might wonder if a game like Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning really needs a downloadable content expansion along the lines of "The Legend of Dead Kel," given the enormous amount of quests and content already available in the core game. Quest and area exploration fatigue can start to kick in by the time you enter Klurikon, after all, and it's likely you still have quite a few side-quests in your journal that you never bothered to complete.

It's good to know, then, that "Dead Kel" goes above and beyond what you would expect from a piece of Reckoning DLC.

A class guide to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning photo
A class guide to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
by Maurice Tan

The piece of Amalur we've seen in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning may only be a slice of the franchise plans for a larger world, but it's pretty damn big already. As with any role-playing game, it can help to know what kinds of skills and abilities you are actually investing time in to unlock.

Fortunately, you can pay a Fateweaver to respec your entire build in Reckoning, which saves you a lot of worrying. But you still don't want to waste unnecessary gold or time to try out new builds, only to find out they don't work out, do you? Not every description of high-end abilities gives you the best idea of what it will actually play like, much less how they will interact with cross-class builds. Let me help you out with that in a spoiler-free manner.

Review: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Sometimes, the best way to become a blockbuster videogame is to act like you already are one. That seems to be Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's modus operandi, and the gambit is paying off. Despite the big names attached to the project, very few people paid attention to the game until recently, when it started confidently presenting itself as a game that everybody wants.

The power of persuasion at its finest.

However, once you have everybody's attention, the hardest challenge awaits: being good enough to deserve your own contrived hype. Kingdoms of Amalur wants to play with the big boys of the role-playing genre, and even branch off into MMO territory. Now it's got to prove it has the right stuff to make that happen.

38 Studios explains Kingdoms of Amalur online pass

38 Studios has attempted to justify the content being gated behind an online pass in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. When asked why an entire quest line was being held to ransom in exchange for new sales, the developer said it...

Kingdoms of Amalur hides seven quests behind online pass photo
Kingdoms of Amalur hides seven quests behind online pass
by Jim Sterling

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a single-player game, but that hasn't stopped Electronic Arts from cramming an online pass into the game. We knew the pass was going to hide the game's Mass Effect tie-in armor, but now we know that it's holding seven full quests to ransom, too.

This is what greeted me when I opened my review copy, anyway. No manual or anything, just an online pass. Also, the code on my pass is currently invalid, so I cannot get to the content and see what it's like. The sheet tells me I'll get an entire quest line though, made up of seven individual quests.

It's pretty sad that single-player games are starting to chuck online passes around. You know what that says to me? That a publisher is not confident that its game is worth keeping. That's really not the kind of message you want to send your consumers before they even put the disc in.

It's a shame, because Amalur might actually be worth keeping ... but EA clearly doesn't think so.

DTOID Extra: Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions

Hey guys! If you didn't hear, the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo is now available for 360, PS3, and PC. I had some preview-time with the game a while back, and even interviewed the producer, but I think my time with the demo was probably the most enjoyable. Check it out!

I've heard mixed things about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Some say it's great, others feel a little disappointed. After spending time with the demo on Xbox Live, I'm not prepared to judge one way or another -- after all, it's a huge RPG that needs more than an hour. Still, I can say this -- I've got a good feeling about it.

At its core, Reckoning is very much a typical open world, hack n' slash RPG. However, it's looking set to be a lovely one. Combat is straightforward, but tight and satisfying. Amalur is, itself, a rather beautiful environment -- very brightly colored, with a unique blend of "realistic" and cartoon-like visuals.
