S2 Games' Heroes of Newerth may not have the massive audiences that League of Legends or Dota 2 manage to pull in these days, but the multiplayer online battle arena game does have something those behemoths lack: Samuel L. Ja...

As of today, all of the currently released heroes in Heroes of Newerthwill be free for everyone. If you've ever played a free-to-play game -- especially one that's a multiplayer online battle arena -- you can likely sympathize with players who feel frustrated by characters or classes that are currency restricted, even if they are set up on a rotation.
"We agree with the community that HoN is best played with a full hero pool available to all players and that both the new and the longtime, dedicated players alike can benefit from the change," reads the announcement post from S2 Games. "We want players to have the freedom to invite their friends and to recommend heroes based on playstyle and not a free hero pool."
Naturally, the focus shifts to long-time players who have purchased some of these now-free heroes. There's a plan in place, but the short of it is this: anyone who bought a hero with gold coins will receive an exclusive Mecha Gemini Alt Avatar. Legacy players will get that as well, in addition to "an extra two silver coins for every ranked (i.e. non-Mid Wars) matchmaking game they play." Nice moves, S2.
Heroes of Newerth has a lot going on during the next few days. It's the second annual HoN-iversary, which marks the introduction of a new game mode called Mid Wars. S2 Games has adapted the popular "All Mid" custom game type that should be of real interest to new and old players alike.
In Mid Wars, there is no loss of gold upon player death, respawn times have been trimmed, and skill progression moves at a faster pace. The goal -- to provide "high action, low stress gameplay" -- seems to be a smart one. S2 Games has a new map and matchmaking for Mid Wars, so go try it out.
Another notable content addition to Heroes of Newerth is the Riftwalker, a ranged intelligence hero. Hit the gallery to see what she looks like, or go check out the patch notes if it's specifics you're looking for.
