Phil Spencer doesn't think Microsoft will get into gaming handhelds

Nintendo and Sony seem to have a lock on the dedicated gaming handheld scene, with the former doing much better than the latter. Of the three major console manufacturers, Microsoft is the odd man out, as it's never shown any ...

Happy 25th Anniversary, Game Boy! photo
Happy 25th Anniversary, Game Boy!
by Brittany Vincent

With fond memories of SolarStriker and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, today I wish the original Game Boy a very happy 25th anniversary. The little handheld that could came into this world kicking and screaming, setting a precedent for on-the-go gaming and becoming the best Pokémon Red and Blue system it ever could be. I kid. I burned that thing up, Pokémon or not.

On April 21, 1989, the original Game Boy leapt onto store shelves bundled with a copy of Tetris, and to date it's gone on to sell 118 million units. Most of them were me purchasing additional copies of Pokémon Red and Blue to force people to trade with me since trading alone with a link cable ceased being so much fun. Or Monster Rancher Battle Card GB.

I didn't get my Game Boy from a retail store and instead my parents nabbed mine from a pawn shop in a sweet carrying case. We were inseparable, especially with my first game having been Kirby's Dream Land. I wouldn't even put that sucker down to let my parents take a decent photo.

The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 portable game photo
The winner of Destructoid's best of 2013 portable game
by Steven Hansen

I think I played -- and loved dearly -- more handheld games in 2013 than I have since the days of Game Boy. Or at least since last year, which gave me two of my favorite games ever, Gravity Rush and Persona 4: Golden.

Still, it was certainly one of the harder categories for me to vote in. I picked up Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon during BioShock Infinite's midnight launch and half-joked it was my Game of the Year. Then more and more great handheld titles poured forth.

Here are the nominees for 2013 Portable Game of the Year:

And the winner is ...

The Superman principle, piracy and more with Crazy Viking photo
The Superman principle, piracy and more with Crazy Viking
by Jonathan Holmes

Last Sunday on Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were talking to Taron Millet and Kristofor Durrschmidt of Crazy Viking Studios -- two developers with some of the most interesting origin stories in gaming. Taron got his start on Atari computers, and Kris got his first job by showing German porn comics to Mormons. That could only lead to good things.

Over the course of their careers at Griptonite, they worked on the Lego Star Wars series, Spyro, Assassin's Creed, Shinobi, and a lot more. After Griptonite was bought out, their focus changed from handheld adaptations of home console releases to freemium mobile games, so Taron and Kris went off on their own with their first independent game, Volgarr the Viking.

We talk about the importance of giving the player character weaknesses for the player to overcome by building their skill, the idea of utilizing the "arcade" pay system on PC/Console games, the advantage of sprite-based graphics in 2D action/platformers, what it was like to work on so many legendary franchises, how it felt to see that only 4% of people playing their game bought it, the old Griptonite Vs Wayforward rivalry, hints about their next game, and a lot more.

Thanks so much to Taron and Kris for hanging out, and join us tomorrow at 1pm PST/4pm EST when we welcome Kyle Reimergartin (Fjords) to the program. It's going to be a holiday flavorite.
