PSA: Sonic CD is free for Android for 7 more hours photo
PSA: Sonic CD is free for Android for 7 more hours
by Steven Hansen

Apparently-controller-compatible Sonic CD is Amazon's free Android app of the day for about seven more hours. This staggering deal will literally save you dollars compared to the usual $3 price tag.

Use them well. I'm going to buy a lottery ticket and burn the other two as sacrifice. For luck.

Hitman: Absolution, Deadlight are April's free Games with Gold photo
Hitman: Absolution, Deadlight are April's free Games with Gold
by Jordan Devore

The featured titles in Microsoft's Games with Gold promotion have tended to not be compelling, I think most of us can agree. April shows signs of improvement, with Hitman: Absolution available to Xbox Live Gold members for free from April 1 - 15, and Deadlight offered from April 16 - 30.

I hadn't yet played the game, but our own Brett Makedonski shared this advice for Deadlight: "Get it for free, play the first bit, then put it down forever."

Let's hope this pair is the beginning of moderately good things to come for Games with Gold.

Mercenary Kings, Batman: Arkham City free for PlayStation Plus photo
Mercenary Kings, Batman: Arkham City free for PlayStation Plus
by Steven Hansen

I kept forgetting to buy into Mercenary Kings' Early Access, but now who's the shrewd consumer, huh? Mercenary Kings is going to be free with PlayStation Plus tomorrow. Oh, on PS4? Damn. Almost.

Meanwhile, PS3 owners get to take advantage of Arkham Knight hype and play what is definitely the most recent Batman game, I don't know of any other Batman game that has released since Arkham City, no sir.

There will also be a bunch of Amazing Spiderman junk on sale. Ew, spider junk.

Dead Space is free if you're willing to put up with Origin photo
Dead Space is free if you're willing to put up with Origin
by Jordan Devore

In an effort to get you to finally install Origin, Electronic Arts has begun a new On the House promotion in which "full games, expansions, and more" can be downloaded for free.

The first selection is one those who can deal with horror games ought to play: Dead Space.

Frankly, I'm not sure what else would convince someone to play this for the first time in 2014 other than it being given away for free. While Visceral lost its momentum with Dead Space 3, the two prior games are absolutely worth playing for genre fans -- they hold up well to this day.

Play Wii Sports Club for free this weekend photo
Play Wii Sports Club for free this weekend
by Jordan Devore

As announced last week, Nintendo is giving Wii U owners the opportunity to play Wii Sports Club for free today through Sunday, March 23 at 11:59 PM Pacific. There are three games available currently -- Tennis, Bowling, and Golf -- and the latter just got a new nine-hole Resort Course.

Outside of promotions like this, these sports are $9.99 each to own, or $1.99 to rent all of them for 24 hours on the Wii U eShop. Nintendo is offering this particular free weekend in the United Kingdom as well, by the way. Too bad Baseball and Boxing aren't out yet!

Now all I need is to hire a bunch of actors to portray my family. I like the look of those old folks.

Day-one patch for inFamous: Second Son adds 19 missions photo
Day-one patch for inFamous: Second Son adds 19 missions
by Jordan Devore

As Chris mentioned in his review of inFamous: Second Son, Sucker Punch is expanding the core game with the Cole's Legacy and Paper Trail story arcs. The first of this content will be playable tomorrow as part of a day-one patch alongside difficulty balancing and technical improvements.

Paper Trail is a free set of 19 missions which are said to extend the game by approximately five hours and tell the "full story behind the [Department of Unified Protection's] occupation of Seattle" both in-game and online. This content was co-developed by alternate-reality game maker 42 Entertainment and also includes "web-based investigations."

As for Cole's Legacy, that's also free -- if you have a Limited Edition copy of Second Son. Sucker Punch says this is spread across four story missions, providing another hour of gameplay.

As much as it can be a pain to have day-one updates prevent you from immediately diving into a game you just cracked open, this will be a welcome sight.

PvZ: Garden Warfare is getting substantial new DLC and it's free photo
PvZ: Garden Warfare is getting substantial new DLC and it's free
by Jordan Devore

I've been pleasantly surprised by the way Electronic Arts and PopCap have handled Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. First, the game itself is loads of fun -- the foundation is solid. But more than that, they don't have paid microtransactions yet even though they absolutely could have had those ready for day one, and the game's upcoming DLC is not only free, it's worthwhile.

Detailed today ahead of its March 18, 2014 release on Xbox One and Xbox 360, the Garden Variety Pack offers a new map, Chomp Town, and the eight-on-eight Gnome Bomb mode in which both plants and zombies try to destroy the other team's base.

There are also 24 new character ability upgrades -- three for each of the eight primary classes -- providing some additional (and much-needed) variety. Examples listed include a Super Goop attack for the Chomper which cements zombies, an Ultra Tackle for the All-Star, and a Solar Flare Beam for the way-too-happy Sunflower. Also be on the lookout for Pirate Zombies in the existing Sharkbite Shores and Port Scallywag maps.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer talks improving Games with Gold photo
Microsoft's Phil Spencer talks improving Games with Gold
by Jordan Devore

Comparisons between Microsoft's Games with Gold and Sony's PlayStation Plus cannot be helped. The two services may be set up differently, but on the surface, they both offer free games (some much newer than others) with a subscription. Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer spoke about the program during a Q&A session at SXSW, reports Polygon.

"One of our issues with Games with Gold -- not 'issues,' but differences between the other system we get compared to, is the fact that with Games with Gold, you get to keep that game, regardless of whether you continue to subscribe," he said. "And the business around Games with Gold, for us, is just fundamentally different from some of the other programs that are out there, which does put a different financial picture on a -- you're gonna go buy a game that's brand new, the cost of putting that in, just to be kind of blunt about it."

For its part, Microsoft appears to be listening to feedback even if it might not seem that way at all based on the service's offerings as of late. Continuing, Spencer said "I have been sitting down, monthly now, with that team -- some of the earlier months were already programmed -- and playing a more active role in picking franchises that show up in Games with Gold, and I think you'll see at least something that feels, at least, more true to what I think Games with Gold should look like with the constraints that are there."

Those darned constraints. At this rate, I'm more interested in seeing how Microsoft approaches Games with Gold on Xbox One where there isn't a library of years-old titles to fall back on.

Phil Spencer: Games with Gold will feel 'more true' to what consumers want in the future [Polygon]
