Geometry Wars 3 is evolving with 40 new stages and Hardcore Mode photo
Geometry Wars 3 is evolving with 40 new stages and Hardcore Mode
by Jordan Devore

This is unexpected. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is rolling out a free update across all platforms (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC) on March 31, 2015 that's large enough to warrant a name change. Going forward, the game will be known as Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved.

Adventure Mode, the one with boss battles, is adding 40 stages, and the existing score-based gating system for unlocking levels is being tweaked so that it's easier to get through. You'll also be able to choose the new Sweeper drone and Detonator super ability (i.e., more stuff to level up).

Hardcore Mode, according to Lucid Games and Sierra, "lets players tackle 20 dedicated levels without using a drone or super, including individual leaderboards for no-loadout purists to compete for high scores." Terrific excuse to get back into Geometry Wars 3. (Also, what's the catch?)

Grab a free copy of BioShock Infinite on Xbox Live photo
Grab a free copy of BioShock Infinite on Xbox Live
by Jordan Devore

March is already half over (have you filed your taxes yet?), which means more free Xbox games.

With an active Xbox Live Gold membership, you can now download BioShock Infinite for free on Xbox 360. Love it or hate it, there's no denying the game's heavenly opener. Every once in a while I'll get the urge to see the ascension to Columbia again on YouTube. "Halleluiah."

Rayman Legends is the one and only free Xbox One title this month, but it's so good I don't even mind. That and the recently-released Ori and the Blind Forest make for a blissful combination.

Evolve's free map DLC is doing that 'Xbox first' thing photo
Evolve's free map DLC is doing that 'Xbox first' thing
by Jordan Devore

It's great to see free maps in a multiplayer-centric game like Evolve, but -- there just had to be a but -- timed platform exclusivity? Considerably less good. When the maps Broken Hill Mine and Broken Hill Foundry debut on March 31, they'll only be available for Xbox One. Following that initial release, PC and PlayStation 4 players will be able to download the pair on April 30.

"Mine" is set in a cave system whose hidden pathways should thoroughly confuse untrained hunters (like me!), while "Foundry" is more of an industrial zone containing crates of bohrium that the beast can consume (though doing so will make enough noise to give away its position).

If Turtle Rock Studios can keep a steady flow of new content going, there may still be a decently active player base by the time I dig into Evolve. Speaking of which, I need to check in on Titanfall.

Titanfall turns one year old, gives away all DLC for free photo
Titanfall turns one year old, gives away all DLC for free
by Brett Makedonski

Titanfall celebrates the first anniversary of its launch today. There might not be a grand showcase dedicated to everything that's happened to the game over the year, but EA and Respawn haven't forgotten about it altogether. They're quietly handing out gift bags to anyone who still wants to party.

All of Titanfall's add-ons across all three platforms -- Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC -- have been made free. Users can simply queue up the season pass on their preferred system. It's currently unknown how long this freebie will last, so it's best to pick it up now instead of waiting.

Tactical cyberpunk game Syndicate free on Origin photo
Tactical cyberpunk game Syndicate free on Origin
by Jordan Devore

Remember that time Starbreeze and EA brought Syndicate back as a first-person shooter?

Wait, no, forget I ever mentioned it. I'm sorry.

Instead, nab the original Bullfrog Productions-developed Syndicate for free through Origin's On the House. Once the game is in your library, it'll stay there, and this is a good one to have.

[Thanks, Luna Sy]

One last look at GTA Online heists ahead of next week's launch photo
One last look at GTA Online heists ahead of next week's launch
by Jordan Devore

For as long of a wait as it's been, I'm still enthusiastic about heists in Grand Theft Auto Online.

Rockstar previously said that coming up with missions in which every player in the crew feels important at all times "turned out to be a lot more difficult than we originally thought [and] took several passes from scratch." Console players will find out if the studio succeeded come Tuesday.

Until then, here's a bunch of new screenshots, some of which show the heist planning stage.

Looks like Unreal Tournament is in capable hands photo
Looks like Unreal Tournament is in capable hands
by Jordan Devore

The new Unreal Tournament is going to look gorgeous once Epic and the community are finished working on it. Last I saw of the project, it had only just become "a game," and now here it is making real good use of Unreal Engine 4. According to Epic, the map shown in this video, Outpost 23, "sets our visual bar for where we would like to see Unreal Tournament continue moving forward."

You can download a pre-alpha build of the game (or simply follow its continued development) over here. It takes a certain type of person to be interested enough to want to do that, and I imagine said person is fully capable of destroying me in UT, so I'm going to pass for the time being.

The wonderful Double Fine Adventure documentary is going free photo
The wonderful Double Fine Adventure documentary is going free
by Jordan Devore

Folks who helped crowdfund Broken Age have gotten an up-close look at how Double Fine operates thanks to episodic videos chronicling development of the adventure game.

With 18 episodes down, 2 Player Productions has produced hours upon hours of compelling footage, and now it's being set free: the documentary series will be uploaded to YouTube piece by piece each Tuesday and Thursday, starting today. The first three episodes are up now.

I'm sure I've written this before, but the documentary was the main reason I backed Broken Age. It's phenomenal, insightful, humanzing, and funny. Whenever an email comes in with a new episode, I want to put down what I'm doing (usually work) and take an extra long "lunch break."

Go build something: Unreal Engine 4 is free to use photo
Go build something: Unreal Engine 4 is free to use
by Jordan Devore

Epic Games is no longer charging developers a monthly subscription for Unreal Engine 4. The engine is now free for anyone to use. Well, free to a point -- "When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter."

However, there's no royalty associated with "film projects, contracting, and consulting projects such as architecture, simulation, and visualization," according to Epic. The company also promises that all future updates for Unreal Engine 4 will be free.

Developers who just paid the old monthly fee for access to the engine will get a pro-rated refund to cover their most recent payment and everyone who's ever paid for an UE4 subscription will get a $30 credit in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. Smooth moves all around.

I wonder if Unity has any announcements lined up. It is Game Developers Conference week.

How do you Do It? I do it with action figures on Steam photo
How do you Do It? I do it with action figures on Steam
by Jed Whitaker

There sure have been a lot of free games coming out on Steam these days, and how do you Do It? is probably my favorite. You're an 11-year-old girl and you've just seen your mother having sex. Now you're hell bent on figuring out just how that works by using your action figures.

Go grab the game from Steam and make your action figures hump to your heart's content while pondering aloud if you're doing it right. I'm really hoping for someone to make a classic action figures mod. Thundercats, HO!

by Jed Whitaker

Great news for all you Pokémaniacs out there: you can now receive Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr along with their Hidden Abilities from the Pokémon Bank, brother.

This comes just after the one year anniversary of the Pokémon Bank, meaning your subscription probably just ran out. Unlike the currently sold-out golden Mario amiibo, these will be available through the end of November this year.

March's Games with Gold are some of the best games photo
March's Games with Gold are some of the best games
by Brett Makedonski

In the recent past, Xbox Live's Games with Gold program has had mostly the same cadence every month: a standout title, an indie game, and a bit of filler. March breaks that mold with three superb games from 2013.

March's Xbox One title is Rayman Legends, which just happened to be my game of the year in 2013. Seriously, it's amazing. When informed of the selection, Destructoid editor Jordan Devore couldn't control his outbursts, exclaiming "So dang good!" and "Those games are masterful."

Legacy console Xbox 360's titles aren't slouches either. Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider kicks off the first half of March, and BioShock Infinite holds down the back-end. All three games here are certainly worth downloading and playing.

And, as an added bonus, Microsoft has announced that April will double down on Games with Gold. That means two games on Xbox One, and four on Xbox 360. Microsoft claims that this is to celebrate the program crossing 100 million game downloads across its lifetime. Whatever the reasoning, Xbox Live subscribers will certainly welcome the freebies.

Steam's running a free weekend for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare multiplayer photo
Steam's running a free weekend for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare multiplayer
by Jordan Devore

To jump straight to the not-so-fun part: it's a 43.5GB download for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and the promo only covers multiplayer. Also, it lasts until Sunday, February 22 at 1:00pm Pacific.

So you can't swoop in, oggle digital Spacey, and clear the campaign like I was planning to do.

I spent too long trying to figure out that instead of searching for a "play for free" button on the game's Steam page, I should have been looking for Advanced Warfare in my library, uninstalled, all along. Yup, there it is. If you're not seeing the title in your list, try updating the Steam client.
