Broforce presents The Expendabros, a free crossover game photo
Broforce presents The Expendabros, a free crossover game
by Jordan Devore

Free Lives' Broforce is a run-and-gun game with a parody-filled cast of action movie heroes. Indianna Brones, Rambro, Snake Broskin -- the list goes on. It's all too perfect, then, that this team has collaborated with The Expendables 3 for a free promotion game.

This is The Expendabros, out now on Steam.

All told, there are seven playable characters based on the film and ten missions. Pretty dang cool. Even if you aren't into The Expendables, this should be a good taste of the full-fledged Broforce.

Pinsir and Heracross are part of the next Pokémon distribution event photo
Pinsir and Heracross are part of the next Pokémon distribution event
by Jordan Devore

The next Pokémon distribution event isn't terribly exciting. From August 13 through September 17, Pokémon X players can get Heracross and Y players can get Pinsir through the Internet.

More importantly, GameStop will offer code unlocks in the US for the Mega Stones needed to Mega Evolve Heracross and Pinsir. Those will first be available August 18 while supplies last.

These Pokémon are normally version exclusives, but that doesn't mean much now that the series has become online-enabled and trading is easier than ever. That said, I am glad the powers that be are planning to give out the Heracronite and Pinsirite Mega Stones.

PSA: Xbox Live Gold members, go get yo' free games! photo
PSA: Xbox Live Gold members, go get yo' free games!
by Brett Makedonski

As you flip the calendar from July's impossibly cute picture of a puppy to August's impossibly cute picture of a puppy, you should be reminded that there's a new stable of free games to download on Xbox One and Xbox 360 for Xbox Live Gold members. Maybe you should just start writing "Games with Gold" on the calendar for the first of every month so you don't have to rely on the Internet people.

The offerings right now are Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero on Xbox One, and Motocross Madness on Xbox 360. The Xbox One titles are both available through the end of the month, but Motocross Madness is only free through August 15. That's when Dishonored -- the real highlight of August -- takes over until September rolls around.

Final reminder: It's the last day to get your free Wii U game with Mario Kart 8 photo
Final reminder: It's the last day to get your free Wii U game with Mario Kart 8
by Jordan Devore

If you ordered Mario Kart 8 and somehow neglected to register your copy for one of the free Wii U games Nintendo is giving out, this is the final day to do so.

Just redeem the code printed on the insert using Club Nintendo, or link your Club Nintendo account to your Wii U before buying Mario Kart 8 if you're getting the title digitally.

The choices are, again, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Wii Party U in North America. Europe is offering those, plus Game & Wario, Sonic Lost World, Nintendo Land, The Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. (What'd you get, by the way?)

Most of you who were going to register Mario Kart 8 probably did so already, so here's a potentially more useful nudge: don't forget to check your status in the Deluxe Digital Promotion if you're a Wii U Deluxe Set owner. You might just have a $5 eShop code in there.

Celebrate the Game Boy's 25th birthday with this free OC ReMix album photo
Celebrate the Game Boy's 25th birthday with this free OC ReMix album
by Jordan Devore

25 years ago, the Game Boy launched in North America. Do you still have yours?

The folks at OverClocked ReMix have put together a celebratory arrangement album, Legacy: Game Boy 25th Anniversary, featuring 15 songs from games like Tetris, Super Mario Land, Pokémon Red, Mega Man II, and Batman. Listen to it for free here (or torrent here).

Perfect timing -- I was sorely in need of more music to work to. I'm willing to bet good money that if I dug my Game Boy out of storage, it'd still have enough of a charge to play Qix or whichever game I left in the cartridge slot when I last used the handheld years ago.

Heads up: Payday will be free on Steam in October photo
Heads up: Payday will be free on Steam in October
by Jordan Devore

It feels silly to tell you about a game that's going to be free months from now, but maybe, just this once, it'll prevent someone from buying said game right before the promotion begins. With that in mind, Payday: The Heist will be free for 24 hours on October 18, 2014.

This offer is connected to Overkill Software's Crimefest, a celebration of the Payday franchise's third anniversary happening in October. The studio has a goal of 1.5 million community member sign-ups on the Payday 2 Steam group, and there are milestones with rewards. The group now has over 1,050,000 members, hence the free Payday offer.

Even if you're done with the original game, I'd encourage Payday 2 players to take a look at that link -- the other rewards will be relevant to your interests. Looks like we'll get them all, too.

August Games with Gold: Dishonored, Crimson Dragon, more photo
August Games with Gold: Dishonored, Crimson Dragon, more
by Jordan Devore

Microsoft has come out with its August lineup of free games for Xbox Live Gold members and the highlight here is unquestionably Arkane Studios' stealth title Dishonored. You'll want to clear hard drive space for it in a couple weeks. But, that's not the only one worth trying.

The first Games with Gold selections -- Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero on Xbox One, and Motorcross Madness on Xbox 360 -- will be free beginning this Friday, August 1. Then, it's Dishonored's turn from August 16 - 31. We'll have a reminder post when the time comes.

One of the recurring complaints for Games with Gold has been its insistence on featuring stuff that many of us own and have owned for years. With Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero next month, at least we're getting something I imagine not a ton of folks have played yet.

So, uh, EA is giving out The Sims 2 Ultimate for free photo
So, uh, EA is giving out The Sims 2 Ultimate for free
by Jordan Devore

EA recently announced the end of its technical support for The Sims 2 and in doing so said that players would be given a free The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection upgrade as thanks.

That was an unexpected move, but this one's even more surprising: folks who don't even own The Sims 2 can also get the game and all of its expansions for free.

You just need to have an Origin account and, from the Games tab, redeem the product code "I-Love-The-Sims" -- it'll remain active until July 31, 2014 at 10:00am Pacific.

Never once thought I'd own any Sims expansion content, and now I have it all. Wild!

Contest: Win a Titan One cross-compatibility gaming device! photo
Contest: Win a Titan One cross-compatibility gaming device!
by Mr Andy Dixon

[Update: Contest over! Winners will be announced soon.]

Our friends at ConsoleTuner have given us five of their new Titan One cross-compatibility devices to hand out to the Destructoid community!

These things are incredibly awesome. Compatible with the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC, they are the ultimate solution for the problem of not being able to use your favorite controller on every console. And because of the ability to swap button layouts, gamers can use this to adjust their controllers to their personal tastes (something especially important to you southpaw gamers). Plus, there's the GamePack feature: with a GamePack loaded, you get all the cool features that modded controllers can provide, without having to modify your controller and void your warranty.

For a chance to win one of these cool devices for yourself, just leave a comment below! Limit one entry per person, and you have until this Friday at 11:59pm Pacific to enter. Contest is open to anyone with a US shipping address.

Good luck! And don't forget, our Huge members get automatic entry into all contests (as well as a bunch of other awesome perks). Try us out!

Don't want to grind for those new Borderlands 2 skins? Just be patient instead photo
Don't want to grind for those new Borderlands 2 skins? Just be patient instead
by Darren Nakamura

Yesterday, a set of new skins and heads for Borderlands 2 released, featuring the Vault Hunters dressed as characters from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. As it was announced, the customization options would be made available as rare drops, but now it looks like players can expect to get them with a little more consistency, as long as they are willing to wait.

In a post on Gearbox's blog, Jeff Skal details how players can obtain the customizations through Shift codes. Starting with Axton dressed as Athena this Friday, July 18, a new code will be revealed weekly, until August 22 when all six Vault Hunters will have had their due.

So hey! Good news. This game is giving out free cosmetic downloadable content. You may now proceed to the comments to talk about how terrible a different game by the same company is.

Free Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel skins coming to Borderlands 2 on Tuesday photo
Free Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel skins coming to Borderlands 2 on Tuesday
by Darren Nakamura

Over the weekend at GaymerX, Gearbox announced that it would be releasing free Borderlands 2 customization options tomorrow. The idea behind them came from the prolific Borderlands cosplay community, so the Borderlands 2 characters would be dressed as various Pre-Sequel characters. Thanks to Gearbox forum user Norrin Radd, we have the above off-screen image of the Vault Hunters sporting the new skins and heads.

It looks like Gaige is dressed as Moxxi, Salvador as Wilhelm, Axton as Athena, Zer0 as Claptrap, and Maya as Nisha. Even though I have been following Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel fairly closely, I cannot seem to place Krieg's costume. Any ideas out there?

The new customization options should show up as a free title update, but rather than being simply granted to players, they will be included as rare loot drops. It looks like it is about time to start grinding with my Siren again. That cowboy hat is too good to pass up.
