Review: Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen photo
Review: Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
by Chris Carter

I thought Jim was spot on with his review of the original Dragon's Dogma. It had grand ideas, but in many areas, it failed to execute them, and was marred by some fairly glaring design choices. With a full sequel, Capcom could really craft something special and fix a lot of the issues the original suffered from.

For now, you'll have to deal with Dark Arisen, an expansion and semi-update for the game that essentially uses the exact same shell of the original. To be clear, this is not the sequel you've been waiting for -- though it is a small step in the right direction.

New releases: Don't Starve will be the end of you photo
New releases: Don't Starve will be the end of you
by Fraser Brown

I'm a bit late with this week's new releases, as I'm still recovering from my wee sister's wedding, where I wracked up an ungodly bar bill. Your sympathy and donations will be greatly appreciated.

It's a busy week, and I had a hard time deciding which upcoming title made me tingle the most. In the end, however, it's got to be Don't Starve. I've been playing the beta for months, and it's stolen my heart (and sanity). I've turned pig-men into slaves, built towns only for them to be destroyed by hellish monsters, and been driven to the brink of insanity by hunger and fear. I love it.

Also launching this week is StarDrive, a rather lovely 4X space strategy game, the beta of which has already swallowed up a good chunk of my time; zombies continue to be a menace to people living in paradise in Dead Island: Riptide; Star Trek is boldly going where lots of Star Trek games have gone before by not looking like it's very good; Monaco has chums performing heists together, which I can totally get behind; and Dragon's Dogma gets some DLC/ a re-release in the form of Dark Arisen.

Splashing out on anything this week?

GDC: Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen goes the extra mile photo
GDC: Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen goes the extra mile
by Alessandro Fillari

Last year’s release of Dragon’s Dogma turned a lot of heads with its unique take on fantasy action/RPGs. Capcom’s first foray into the open-world genre surprised many with its version of the classic party member mechanic along with its fast-paced combat and exploration. While it didn’t exactly set the world on fire, it still garnered itself a loyal and dedicated following.

Now, Capcom is back with more Dragon’s Dogma with the release of Dark Arisen. Offering a surprisingly massive amount of new content, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen gives returning players a worthy challenge, but also proves itself as the definitive Dragon’s Dogma experience.

Hard and Speedrun modes incoming for Dragon's Dogma photo
Hard and Speedrun modes incoming for Dragon's Dogma
by Jordan Devore

Earlier this year, Capcom briefly spoke of an expansion and new modes that were planned for Dragon's Dogma. The company has since shed further light on the situation, noting that the action-RPG will be given a free title update across Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on December 4 which introduces two extra modes: Speedrun and Hard.

The update, "A Trial for Adventures - Challenge Pack," will offer equipment as incentives for completing either mode. Getting through Hard mode should hopefully be rewarding in and of itself, but if you're curious what the gear looks like, Capcom Unity has some images.
