Sharknado's: The Video Game's press release is a natural disaster photo
Sharknado's: The Video Game's press release is a natural disaster
by Max Scoville

Sometimes, when I check my email, I find wonderful things like messages from friends and family, beta invites, or announcements that something I ordered has shipped. Sometimes, I find a pile of press releases. Sometimes they're harmless, and sometimes they make me wish Y2K had actually been as much of a disaster as promised.

Sharknado: The Video Game will be coming to mobile devices sometime this month.

Another fair comparison: 1001 Spikes is better than Game of Thrones photo
Another fair comparison: 1001 Spikes is better than Game of Thrones
by Jonathan Holmes

Believe it or not, there once was a time when many, many people thought that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was better than Advance Wars. Thankfully, those days are over now. According to my numbers, 89.6% of those who once suffered from the false belief that Kevin Spacey's upcoming AAA blockbuster competitive murder-spree is better than Nintendo's classic cartoon general simulator have been successfully converted to the truth. Though it's hard to be sure just how responsible I am for this turn of events, it's fair to guess that I'm largely responsible, because why not? You're welcome everybody.

But a cowboy's work is never done. There are still many poor souls out there suffering from the delusion that a thing that they like is better than a thing that I like. Case in point -- Game of Thrones. Apparently, many of of you out there believe this show/book series is as good as, or even better than, the new death-trap stuntman 2D platformer Aban Hawkins and the 1001 Spikes.

Sorry Throners, but you're about to get pwned(ers).

Hey, new Wii U owners: Don't forget to play Nintendo Land photo
Hey, new Wii U owners: Don't forget to play Nintendo Land
by Jordan Devore

I forgot Nintendo Land existed until a couple weeks ago. Like some of you, I only recently bought a Wii U and after looking at some "what to play" lists for my next multiplayer game, I was reminded of this minigame collection, took a chance on it, and promptly fell in love.

You should absolutely be playing excellent exclusives like Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, etc. but, eventually, you should check out Nintendo Land, too. Or immediately, if you're in need of a game that can bring family/friends together only to tear them apart.

What're you playing? A lot of Mario Kart 8 around here photo
What're you playing? A lot of Mario Kart 8 around here
by Steven Hansen

You guys might not know this, but some of us here at Destructoid are big fans of videogames. For a change of pace, we'd like to share that interest with you all and fill you in on some of the games we're playing right now.

I mean, not right now, right now. More like this last week. It's the 4th of July right now. No one hates America more than me, but I'll take an excuse to skip out on work in favor of hot links and tequila. We're with our families, friends and loved ones, sitting out in the sun, sharing stories, throwing sports balls. Some us are planning to lose a few fingers to explosives as the sun winds down and the alcohol compromises our equilibrium and decision making.

What kind of sad loser who smells bad is sitting around playing videogames and browsing the internet on 4th of the July, I ask you.

Anyways, let us know what you've been playing these days in the comments!

None of these strategies helped me win at Mario Kart 8 photo
None of these strategies helped me win at Mario Kart 8
by Brett Makedonski

I've fought the urge to buy a Wii U specifically for Wind Waker HD for the better part of a year now. After a strong E3 by Nintendo and a convenient Mario Kart 8 promotion, I finally relented. Between flipping through old Zelda titles, I make time for the occasional race or two of Mario Kart.

The problem with Mario Kart 8 is that I haven't yet found a consistent strategy to win. In fact, more often than not, they end in defeat. (If you're not first, you're last; I saw it on a bumpersticker.) These are a few of the techniques that I've tried thus far; I don't recommend any of them.

In honor of Canada Day, a video about Akira. photo
In honor of Canada Day, a video about Akira.
by Max Scoville

Today is Canada day. And since "Canada" sounds kind of, sort of like "Kaneda," the hero of Otomo Katsuhiro's groundbreaking cyberpunk manga-turned-anime Akira, that's reason enough for me to put on my favorite red jacket and talk about one of his favorite pieces of media ever... Japanese, Canadian, or otherwise.

Guacamelee! is largely the product of DrinkBox trolling one another photo
Guacamelee! is largely the product of DrinkBox trolling one another
by Brett Makedonski

Videogames are often at their best when you can just tell that the developers had fun making it. There's a special quality that shines through -- one that can sometimes be tough to place, but somehow makes itself passively apparent. When games are developed by people that truly love creating with one another, well, it just seems like everything turns out better.

Guacamelee! was undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable titles of 2013. The comedic action platformer had an odd, quirky brilliance permeate the entire experience. When DrinkBox Studios went into the lab to make Guacamelee! and Super Turbo Championship Edition, everyone had a good time doing so -- usually light-heartedly at the expense of their co-workers.

The best stuff on Destructoid this week [6/28]

Burn it all to the ground.

I'm making guacamole.

Here's last week's post. Let's begin anew.

[We post a lot of articles here at Destructoid. The endless, ouroboros news cycle has us burning the snake at both ends, which will ultimately push big news, thoughtful original pieces, and all sorts of other great content off of the front page. Check here every Saturday for my attempt to rectify that.]

Only some of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's new tech sounds cool photo
Only some of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's new tech sounds cool
by Max Scoville

In a lovingly overproduced developer diary, a couple of Sledgehammer bros ran down the exciting new gear in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, including this year's "game-changer," the exo-skeleton, and hyped some of their other groundbreaking innovations such as... as laser. If nothing else, there was an opening for a Mountain Dew joke.

Video: Japan's new Godzilla game looks a bit rough
by Max Scoville

The King of The Monsters is stomping his big dumb lizard feet all over the Playstation 3 this winter, but only in Japan. Bandai Namco hasn't really given us much else to go on for this game. Will it come out in the west? No idea, but the recent Godzilla movie from Legendary Pictures did pretty well, so who knows.

Hardline 24: Mirror's Edge 2's combat, supporting Bad Company, and Sonic fandom photo
Hardline 24: Mirror's Edge 2's combat, supporting Bad Company, and Sonic fandom
by Jordan Devore

This is what happens when there isn't much news to dig into in the weeks following E3.

I tried to talk with Steven, Brett, and Hamza about a few of the silly EA stories that made the rounds earlier this week -- Mirror's Edge 2 focusing on refining first-person combat, DICE not entirely knowing what made Battlefield: Bad Company 2 special -- but we had vorarephilia on our minds.

If you don't know what that is, as I didn't prior to a couple days ago, that's probably for the best.
