Bitmob/Destructoid to live stream 20 hours of Dead Island photo
Bitmob/Destructoid to live stream 20 hours of Dead Island
by Nick Chester

I can't stay up past 10:30 PM anymore because I'm old, but I know a few people who can. Destructoid is teaming with Bitmob to play Deep Silver's cooperative zombie-massacre title Dead Island for -- wait for it -- 20 hours straight. Or until the game's credit roll. Things could get interesting...

Yup, it's a classic all-nighter, and it'll be live streamed starting today at 7:00PM PST. Destructoid's Max Scoville and Tara Long will be teaming up with Bitmob's Sebastian Haley and Chloe Dykstra for this 20-hour-long descent into madness. Extra goodies to look out for:

  • Free copies of Dead Island will be given to randomly selected viewers throughout the event.
  • Expect surprise guests, including back-up players like cosplayer Linda Le and Crystal Dyanamics community manager Meagan Marie.
  • Udon lead artist Long Vo will be taking requests and drawing zombiefied versions of famous videogame characters.
  • And… other surprises!

Check back tonight around 6:45 PM PST for links to the live stream. Special thanks to Astro Gaming, Deep Silver, and Crystal Dynamics for putting up with this crazy idea and helping to make it a reality.

It's amazing that, after so many years, developers still haven't learned a universal truth about PC games -- if you put something in your code, people will find it. So it is that a Steam user was poking around in Dead Island'...

Dead Island's character animation is terrifying

Dead Island is a pretty scary game at times, but it turns out that the real horror isn't the undead ... it's the living! Using the accidentally released "dev kit" version of the game, a player went into third-person mode to ...

Here's the list of fixes in Dead Island's day-one patch!

As you might have already read in our Dead Island review, Techland's tropical zombie-slicer is a little on the broken side. It's got a wonderful heart, but it's riddled with problems and is in need of fixing. When the game la...

Review: Dead Island photo
Review: Dead Island
by Jim Sterling

With its debut trailer, Techland set itself the impossible goal of living up to self-generated hype on a massive scale. The video, which showed a family beset by zombies while a hauntingly beautiful refrain played, led one to believe that Dead Island would be an emotional roller coaster that touched on the human side of undead apocalypse.

Well, it's not.

Those with even a small degree of cynicism could have guessed Techland would fall short of its conceptually ambitious opening gambit. Instead, Dead Island almost completely abandons narrative in favor of unadulterated violence, co-operative combat, and roleplaying elements. Whether or not this was a wise decision depends on one thing ... how awesome you think poisoned katanas and exploding knives are.

Dead Island screens show playable character Purna

Here's a modest sampling of Dead Island screens for your viewing enjoyment. They show off Purna, one of the game's playable characters. She has a really big knife, and that's literally all I know about her.  The game is due out early September, and I'm pretty excited for it. Who among you are planning to pick it up?
