EA aims to make $1 billion from extra content this year

Everyone knows that downloadable add-ons for videogames have become a profitable trend in recent years. This year, EA's aiming high and hopes to rake in a record amount of revenue from DLC. According to an article on Bloomber...

Mashup! Mario Kart 8 DLC adds Link, Animal Crossing Villager photo
Mashup! Mario Kart 8 DLC adds Link, Animal Crossing Villager
by Jordan Devore

[Update: Nintendo of America has released more details, mainly that both downloadable content packs will cost $7.99 each, or $11.99 if you buy them together. Pre-orders are now open and they grant immediate access to the new Yoshi and Shy Guy colors.]

Whoa! The official Nintendo UK Store website has a listing for upcoming Mario Kart 8 DLC that will add characters and courses from other Nintendo properties, including The Legend of Zelda's Link, Animal Crossing's Villager, and a kart based on F-Zero's Blue Falcon.

The first pack releases in November and includes Link, Cat Peach, Tanooki Mario, four vehicles, and eight courses. Then, in May, the second add-on introduces Villager, Dry Bowser, Isabelle, four more vehicles, and eight new courses. The DLC packs are priced at £7.00 each.

"As a bonus for purchasing both packs -- as a bundle or separately -- you can get eight different-colored Yoshis and eight different-colored Shy Guys that can be used right away."

It's about time this happened. I'll be dying to boot up Mario Kart 8 again come November.

Soul Sacrifice Delta gets Freedom Wars DLC

Two Japanese Vita RPGs centered around fighting giant monsters. Perfect cross over potential. Your Soul Sacrifice Delta character even gets a pair of Freedom Wars' stupid headphones.  Anyone still playing Soul Sacrifice?

ChAIR is wrapping up Infinity Blade III with its final update next week photo
ChAIR is wrapping up Infinity Blade III with its final update next week
by Jordan Devore

As part of my slowly-get-out-of-bed routine this morning, I glanced at my inbox and was delighted to see an email pop up on my phone about ChAIR. Could this be it? The announcement of another Shadow Complex? We've been waiting years for a follow-up!

Nah. It was just a press release for some more Infinity Blade stuff.

The studio is preparing its final update for Infinity Blade III, a free download dubbed Kingdom Come. It'll hit the App Store on September 4, 2014. There's going to be a new environment, more items and weapons, a dragon -- the usual. ChAIR has also put out a recap of the series, viewable above, with some of this new content featured here and there.

I liked the original Infinity Blade fine, but I'm eager to see this team move on to another project.

Review: inFamous: First Light photo
Review: inFamous: First Light
by Chris Carter

It's five months later, and inFamous: Second Son is still one of my favorite games of the year. As a massive improvement in just about every facet of the franchise, I enjoyed seeing how Delsin's story played out, and as I slowly made my way towards a 100% completion rate, I wanted more.

Well, we're getting just that with inFamous: First Light, a standalone DLC story not unlike Festival of Blood, starring Fetch -- the neon heroine from the original.

The next multiplayer maps for The Last of Us will be free photo
The next multiplayer maps for The Last of Us will be free
by Jordan Devore

Naughty Dog has been working to address issues with long wait times in The Last of Us' multiplayer matchmaking and while progress has been made on that front, there's more left to do.

"Over the last two weeks, we've discovered that the most significant improvements may come from working with other teams at PlayStation to make updates to some of the existing matchmaking libraries," the studio wrote. As such, it's hard for the teams to nail down a time frame but we're likely looking at a matter of weeks, not months, until the necessary fixes are deployed.

With that mess still ongoing, Naughty Dog has decided that its next pair of maps for Factions will be released for free on PlayStation 3 and PS4. Not all bad news!

Free maps! And about those pesky matchmaking times… [Naughty Dog]

Wear the carcass of Chester Cheetah in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare

I was prepared to get mildly annoyed at this Cheetos partnership with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, despite the fact that it's not the first time the game has dabbled in brand-sponsored character variants. (There were ...

Long-term support for Hyrule Warriors planned, 'expansion' teased

One day many years ago, I went into Starbucks with a friend. The barista inquired as to whether or not he'd want to try a new bakery item they had just concocted, to which he awkwardly replied, "not unless it's FREE!" It wasn...

Garden Warfare's Suburbination update adds another mode and character photo
Garden Warfare's Suburbination update adds another mode and character
by Jordan Devore

This week's free new update for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare adds Suburbination mode, a capture-and-defend game type in the same vein as Battlefield's Conquest and Call of Duty's Domination. Gardens & Graveyards is still where it's at, but this is a decent distraction.

The DLC also includes the Plasma Peashooter, who is playable immediately without the need to spend in-game coins; the Crash Course map; more stuff for Garden Ops including the vampiric Baron Von Bats boss and the Treasure Yeti; and a bunch of "bling" customization items.

Garden Warfare has become my go-to "unwinding" game and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Finding an annoying hiding place as the zombie soldier and picking off plants is way too satisfying to stop. You're in for a treat next week, PlayStation gamers.

Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts: Nemesis photo
Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts: Nemesis
by Chris Carter

Look, $50 is a lot of money for a Season Pass in a first-person shooter. If it was just comprised of 16 maps alone, no matter how good they were, it probably wouldn't be worth the money for all but the most diehard of FPS fans.

But thankfully, Infinity Ward has made amends for the rather bland core package of Call of Duty: Ghosts, and the Nemesis map pack is no exception. In addition to four solid maps, there's another chapter of Extinction, the developer's out-of-this-world take on Treyarch's zombies.

Because of these packs, I'm actually a bit more excited for Infinity Ward's follow-up in two year's time.

What's the point? Wii U gets Black Ops II map almost two years later

The Wii U often gets the shaft in terms of DLC. It either gets it late, not at all, or is left completely in the wind as to what the status is. Nearly every major publisher has pulled one of these moves, most notably Activisi...
