Review: Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 1 photo
Review: Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 1
by Jordan Devore

Mario Kart 8's first DLC pack has Link riding a horse-shaped bike called the Master Cycle. And, good lord, Mute City from the beloved but still dormant F-Zero series. Also, a track based on Excitebike with a killer remix. Are you even going to read this review?

Don't answer that. Let me have this moment.

Go download the Mario Kart 8 DLC now

Nintendo by and large has been doing DLC right. The Mario Kart 8 DLC pack is massive, adding three characters, four vehicles, and eight tracks to the mix. Breaking free of the typical Kart conventions we're see...

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's Jack the Doppelganger is too sexy for his shirt

I frown on the idea that additional Vault Hunters are being offered for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's season pass in place of story DLC (rather than in addition to it, as Gaige the Mechromancer and Krieg the Psycho were in B...

Hearthstone expansion Goblins vs Gnomes coming this December

This trailer for Goblins vs Gnomes, an expansion for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft hitting next month, sure is fun. I like it when videogame trailers are basically just songs. The expansion will add more than 120 cards, in...

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel illustrates the danger of nebulous season passes photo
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel illustrates the danger of nebulous season passes
by Darren Nakamura

Over the weekend, details came out of PAX Australia regarding the first downloadable Vault Hunter for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. At first, it looked to me like a commendable gesture for a series that receives a lot of criticism on its downloadable content policy. To include a new character in addition to the originally promised content for those loyal enough to buy a season pass seemed worthy of applause. However, that image was based on a misinterpretation of the official blog post's line that references "all four of the upcoming add-on content packs," and a few other (incorrect) assumptions.

As it turns out, the Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack is DLC #1 for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (November 11 is upcoming, after all), and I could only feel more disappointed by that revelation if I had actually purchased this iteration's season pass. My condolences go out to those who did.

Jack's doppelganger in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will fight using digital clones

2K announced at PAX Prime that one of Jack's look-alike bodyguards would be the first DLC Vault Hunter for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, but information past that was scant. Pieces of his back story can be found via semi-hidde...

Here are the details of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's Bloody Harvest Celebration

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's free, limited-time mini event Bloody Harvest Celebration just launched a couple hours ago. The teaser image has several pumpkin-flavored pieces of art, but little extra information. I jumped into...

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's free Halloween content is live right now photo
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's free Halloween content is live right now
by Darren Nakamura

Last year, Borderlands 2 kicked off its Headhunter series of DLC with T.K. Baha's Bloody Harvest, a Halloween-themed mini-expansion that had players meeting up with zombie T.K. Baha and shooting a lot of pumpkins.

It looks like 2K is continuing the tradition with this year's Bloody Harvest Celebration, but rather than paid DLC introducing new areas, this one is a limited time event and is available right now as a free update. It alters the area Regolith Range to feature pumpkin-headed enemies, including a replacement of the boss Deadlift with Undeadlift. Get it? Playing through and can net players an exclusive gun called the Jack-o'-Cannon.

It's an interesting take on DLC, especially for a series that gets criticized for its handling of post-release content. Free stuff is hard to argue with, and I know the time constraint is going to get me to try it out quickly instead of putting it off. Sneaky.

Dress up like the bad guy in this free Shadow of Mordor DLC photo
Dress up like the bad guy in this free Shadow of Mordor DLC
by Jordan Devore

Monolith has released a free Power of Shadow DLC pack for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Most notably, it includes an alternate costume for Talion that resembles the Black Hand of Sauron. Epic Runes are included as well:

  • One with Nature – Immunity to Poison attacks from Uruk Captains or Ghuls.
  • Ascendant – Double Focus Time for slow motion Ranged combat.
  • Elven Grace – Increased defense which halves the damage of enemy strikes.

More clothing options are good if, like Steven, you want to live out matchmaking fantasies or, similar to Nic, you want to become the Dracula of Middle-earth. (I love these guys.)

I'm holding off on Shadow of Mordor until the holiday break, I think. This seems like something I'll want to dig into for a week straight and never touch again. Ever do that?

Killer Instinct's Season 2 is off to a great start photo
Killer Instinct's Season 2 is off to a great start
by Chris Carter

Although it had a few issues in terms of content, Killer Instinct on Xbox One was actually a good game at launch. Since then, I've taken a look at both Spinal and Fulgore, and found them to be a great addition to the already well balanced cast.

After Double Helix flew the coop, the game's fate looked rather iffy until developer Iron Galaxy took over the mantle. The changing of the guard would leave anyone on edge, but IG has done well by Killer Instinct with the Season 2 update, bringing in two new characters and a brand new UI.
