Slugcat gifs? Slugcat gifs

It's been a while since I've espoused my love for Rain World. It looks even smoother in this interesting Kickstarter update, as the game has transitioned to Unity. The update is a good read, but if you're just here for the gifs, well, I feel you. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

Battle Chef Brigade looks like the actual best game photo
Battle Chef Brigade looks like the actual best game
by Steven Hansen

I love cooking, as you hopefully well know. The initial inspiration for A la cartridge was Iron Chef, though it ended up something completely different. And so here is a game that speaks tenderly to my soul.

Battle Chef Brigade, now doing some crowdfunding, is what you'd get if Iron Chef contestants had to go out and kill their own food to serve. It looks gorgeous, which just makes me hungry. It's just like how food always looks so damn good in Ghibli films. And the idea -- have a variety of chefs go out into a persistent environment to get the freshest of ingredients to cook up -- is amazing.

Dragon's Crown's cooking minigame was not enough. This is what I need.

More beautiful game-inspired woodblock prints you can buy

We've shown off Jed Henry's Japanese woodblock renditions of game characters before. I'm still in love with that original Samus one. But Henry's catalog is growing, to my wallet's growing concern. Shadow of the Colossus, Fina...

A day in the life of Rain World's adorable slugcat

Rain World has met its Kickstarter funding goal and, with a week left, is close to its first stretch goal that would increase the likelihood of the game being ported to other platforms. Namely, Linux, but Wii U, Vita, and ju...

Rain World looks AMAZING, stars a slugcat

Look at that art. That animation. That slugcat. I saw glimpses of Rain World long enough ago that I had forgotten about it. How did I forget about this!? The liquidity of cats is a common joke as we watch internet videos of...

Do you like good things? Enjoy this rad Jazzpunk trailer

Remember forever ago when I previewed trippy cyberpunk comedy spy thriller Jazzpunk? Let me just quote myself: "Jazzpunk is hilarious. I laughed, out loud and on the regular, while playing. It's goofy, it's surreal, it...

Pokemon Reorchestrated will double team your ear holes photo
Pokemon Reorchestrated will double team your ear holes
by Jayson Napolitano

I know there are a lot of fans of Pokemon Reorchestrated's Kanto Symphony and Lost Diaries albums out there. The team is now looking to release a new project titled Double Team, which will cover music from the first five generations of the Pokemon franchise and feature a live string ensemble.

But they can't do it without your help. They're running a 21-day Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the recording session with only three days remaining and nearly $5,000 to go. In the final days of the campaign, they're releasing a special Halloween arrangement, and backer rewards include their previous albums and the ability to watch or attend the live recording session.

Pokemon Reorchestrated has done some excellent work in the past, so I'd like to see this project succeed. And they've said that there's a chance that the wildly popular Pokemon X/Y may be featured as well.

So, are you sold on more orchestrated Pokemon music? Do you think the live recording will make it even sweeter?

Luigi, the parkour legend

When Nintendo actually puts forth an effort, it can achieve some amazing feats of marketing magic. You remember the live-action commercials for the Wii version of Punch-Out!!, right? Here's the next level: a documentary about the parkour legend Luigi in honor of New Super Luigi U. That goddamn Nabbit, though, I swear... Finding Luigi - Legend of Parkour [YouTube]

Trippy cyberpunk comedy spy thriller Jazzpunk is my jam photo
Trippy cyberpunk comedy spy thriller Jazzpunk is my jam
by Steven Hansen

I'd be convinced Jazzpunk was made by some actually-talented, alternate universe me, for me, if I didn't meet and chat with one half of its creative team, Necrophone Games' Luis Hernandez, for myself.

It's a first-person joke box riffing on some of my favorite themes. An-Airplane styled goof that delivers its jokes with both panache and clinical deadpan. It's smart, clever, and zany, but not above putting a whoopee cushion on your chair. Literally.

Even in the games I've seen that have managed humor well, few as there are, I'm not sure I've ever played anything quite like this. It's hard to codify my feelings on the game because I have so many different feelings on so many disparate elements of it, albeit all of them resolutely positive. The colorful, cartoonish cyberpunk affair is the weirdest amalgam of some of my favorite things: noir, jazz, Blade Runner. The over-arching spy theme feels appropriately like secret agent parody Get Smart, given the comedic parallels between Jazzpunk and the indelible Mel Brooks.
