The rest of us can play as the Predator in Call of Duty: Ghosts this May

Infinity Ward's DLC capabilities may not be up to snuff compared to Treyarch's, but the fact that they're trying is good enough for me. Call of Duty: Ghost's Onslaught DLC was a major step up in quality when compared to their prior milquetoast map packs, and somehow they've even managed to top Michael Meyer's cameo with the goddamn Predator.

Not all of the maps are created equal, but another strong Extinction mission and the Predator gimmick help elevate the package considerably.

New Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC seems like a real waste photo
New Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC seems like a real waste
by Jordan Devore

This weekend, Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer will be free to play on Steam and the game is half price ($29.99) to own. There's also double XP being offered, from February 21 at 10:00am to Feb. 24 at 10:00am. These are all things I was somewhat happy to talk about.

Then I got wind of this week's customization DLC for Ghosts, shown in the trailer above, and I'm rather put off. Yes, this stuff is surely going to make money as cosmetic DLC for popular multiplayer games tends to, but I feel obligated to call out its grossness.

First are the personalization packs -- Circuit, Ducky, Inferno, and Space Cats -- at $1.99 each. Kind of sloppy looking, but okay. Next, character skins straight out of Ghosts' campaign are being sold at $1.99 a pop; those are Keegan, Merrick, Hesh, and Elias. That same amount of money can also get you four extra Create-a-Soldier loadout slots in the Extra Slots Pack.

Lastly, there's Captain Price. He's playable in multiplayer with the same sort of personalized items -- a custom player patch, background, card, and reticule -- if you scrounge up $3.99. To each their own, but having bought crap like this before, it almost always ends in regret.

Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts: Onslaught
by Chris Carter

Call of Duty: Ghosts is one of the most disappointing games in the series' history. Although I didn't dislike it as much as Jim did, there's certainly something missing that made past games in the franchise appealing, and it's not just because the formula is getting stale.

The campaign was a bore, multiplayer didn't really bring much to the table, and worst of all, the highly anticipated "Extinction" mode was grossly underutilized. While the new map pack doesn't fundamentally fix the core problems of Ghosts, it does make it a little more interesting as a whole.

Opinion: Stop annualizing Call of Duty photo
Opinion: Stop annualizing Call of Duty
by Chris Carter

There is room for Call of Duty in the gaming world -- I assure you. I don't know about milking it every damn year, but there is plenty of room for those of us who enjoy mindless first-person fun with our friends, occasionally in a military based fashion.

But the milk's gone bad, and Activision needs to step up to the plate and fix it. Here's how they can do it, and avoid the next Guitar Hero crash.

Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts photo
Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts
by Jim Sterling

While Call of Duty is often regarded as the epitome of the annualized, cynically produced, lazily constructed videogame franchise, I've always maintained that both Infinity Ward and Treyarch expended much more effort than they were ever given credit for.

Whether it's the underestimated storytelling prowess of Modern Warfare or the noble efforts to revitalize the COD formula with Black Ops, the overwhelmingly popular series is far more cognizant of its own criticisms than many like to believe.

My defense of the consistent quality of Call of Duty has certainly caught criticism of its own. Indeed, I am lauded as a hypocrite for daring to suggest that Modern Warfare 3 was not objectively, factually, a mediocre game. I still believe that, and I still have respect for Call of Duty as a series. However, I've always been mindful that the gravy train cannot last forever, and as "military shooters" are in 2013 what World War II shooters were in 2008, it's high time Call of Duty underwent another dramatic transformation, the likes of which gave us the original Modern Warfare

Black Ops II was a step forward in this regard, an earnest attempt to inject fresh life into a flagging idea. By comparison, Ghosts is not only a failure to capitalize on the goodwill Black Ops II earned, it's a disappointing step backward.

Aliens invade Call of Duty: Ghosts in new Extinction mode photo
Aliens invade Call of Duty: Ghosts in new Extinction mode
by Jordan Devore

[Update: Official trailer added. Extinction is described as a "1-4 player cooperative game mode featuring a unique blend of fast-paced survival action, FPS base defense, scavenging and class leveling." Get to the chopper.]

I've always found Treyarch's Zombies mode to be a fun bonus for the studio's otherwise fairly serious Call of Duty games and have longed for Infinity Ward to offer something similar in its titles. Seems we may be getting exactly that in Call of Duty: Ghosts if an image of a loading screen for "Extinction" (shown below for the spoiler averse) is to be believed.

Aliens? Yeah, looks like it. There's been an official teaser that matches the design of the creature as well as achievements for Ghosts that reference the mode. Neat. I'd assume we'll hear more from Infinity Ward leading up to launch but, if not, that's only a week off.

Call of Duty: Ghosts campaign trailer has guns, tautology
by Darren Nakamura

"You never expect something you trust to turn against you." Why yes, that is the definition of trust. I'm sure it sounded cooler in the writer's head.

Snark aside, as a fan of the Call of Duty series' single player campaigns, it's nice to know that Infinity Ward is still putting some effort into the mode more neglected by its players. Astronauts with guns? That one is new. Satellite-based doomsday weaponry? A little Goldeneye-esque, but I'll take it. And of course, the badass Ghosts dog attacks a helicopter, because that is what badass dogs do.

Hands-on with Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer offerings photo
Hands-on with Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer offerings
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer has finally been revealed, and it's the biggest overhaul Infinity Ward has done since the first Modern Warfare. What I got to play at the reveal event was pretty fun, but then again that's not shocking as I've always enjoyed playing the series' multiplayer.

And I think that's how things boil down here. If you've enjoyed Call of Duty's multiplayer in the past, then you'll like Ghosts' just the same. If you've never been into the series before, well, there's nothing too different here that will suddenly pull you into the experience.

That's not to say there aren't some cool new changes that refresh things just a little, but on the whole, there's nothing huge that will make you think twice about giving this one a go.

CoD: Ghosts sees biggest multiplayer overhaul since MW1 photo
CoD: Ghosts sees biggest multiplayer overhaul since MW1
by Jordan Devore

During today's reveal event for Call of Duty: Ghosts, a video montage showed what's new in multiplayer -- and new stuff there is. "We went through every single system in the game," said executive producer Mark Rubin, which resulted in this being "the biggest overhaul of multiplayer since the original Modern Warfare." Here are some of the highlights:

  • Character customization is in, including playable female soldiers. There are some 20,000 possible combinations which are both cosmetic in nature and affect gameplay.
  • Maps have dynamic events and environmental destruction.
  • There are seven new game modes, thirty new weapons, the new Marksman Rifle class, 20 new killstreaks, and a new co-op mode.
  • The create-a-soldier system is similar to Treyarch's Pick Ten. You'll have a budget to spend, and perks have varying number values associated with them.
  • You can create a squad of up to ten soldiers, each with a unique loadout, appearance, and ability to prestige.
  • New animations and movement systems: there's contextual leaning, a mantling system that let's you jump over obstacles, and a knee slide to go from sprinting to crouch or prone.
  • Modes: Cranked, where a kill makes you faster but also starts a 30-second timer in which you must earn another kill; Search and Rescue, where your team can revive you by picking up your tag or enemies can deny the revive by doing the same; and Squads, in which your custom squad competes against AI or other players.
  • Infinity Ward has plans for eSports following Treyarch's work on Black Ops II but only mentioned the CoD Championship and Ghosts' inclusion in the 2014 MLG Pro Circuit.
  • The studio is reducing the number of air-based killstreaks; for instance, the UAV is now a ground-based device instead of a drone in the air. No more death streaks, either.
  • The Season Pass is back with another four map packs and the Team Leader digital pack, including an exclusive multiplayer character. You can transfer your stats, prestige level, and profile across console generations, and DLC from the pass carries over too.

Talk about an information overload. Hamza is in town for the event, so expect to hear more from him about Ghosts' multiplayer, including hands-on, this week.
