Microsoft buys Gears of War, and puts Black Tusk to work on a new game, InFamous: Second Son's latest developer diary gets wet, there's a new video for episode 2 of Bioshock Infinite's Burial At Sea DLC, the Sly Cooper movie gets a trailer, Elysium director Neil Blomkamp is supposedly directing the first episode of the Halo show, and the guy who did the O.D.S.T. commercials is on board for a Ghost In The Shell movie. The Elder Scrolls Online won't require a Playstation Plus membership on top of its monthly fee, Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 is a real thing, and Namco Bandai is now Bandai Namco.

Microsoft buys the rights to the Gears of War franchise photo
Microsoft buys the rights to the Gears of War franchise
by Chris Carter

Microsoft has always been synonymous with the Gears of War franchise, but now, it's officially official. It appears as if they've bought the rights in their entirety from Epic Games, allowing them to take over all past and future games, the latter of which will be developed in Vancouver by Black Tusk Studios under the leadership of former Epic Games director of production Rod Fergusson.

Well, this most likely won't impact anyone in a major way, as you're either a Gears fan or you aren't. It also all but confirms a new Gears of War game on the Xbox One.

Gears of War is free on Xbox Live right now photo
Gears of War is free on Xbox Live right now
by Jordan Devore

I dislike being ungrateful for free games, but I have a limit and it's Gears of War. Epic Games' 2006 cover-based shooter is free for Xbox Live Gold members now through December 15.

The game inexplicably goes for $19.99 on the service normally, though one could easily find a pre-owned copy for a few dollars, I'm sure. And I don't intend to knock Gears of War itself here, as I quite like the series. It's just that there's a time and place for everything and including this as one of the two Games for Gold titles in December looks silly.

At least the next game, Shoot Many Robots, is one a significant amount of people haven't played yet. Look for that to go free on December 16. It's pretty good!

Gears of War: Judgment gets another free map next week photo
Gears of War: Judgment gets another free map next week
by Jordan Devore

While it would have been nice for Gears of War: Judgment to come out of the gate with more content, the fact that some of the post-release DLC is free helps reduce the sting.

Following the Haven map and Execution mode, another multiplayer map, Dreadnought, will be free for a limited time starting on May 15. This is courtesy of Maxim, which leads me to believe someone did their marketing-research homework on demographics.

I have to say, the new map does look cool -- fitting of the name, too. Be sure to get Dreadnought on or around Wednesday while it's still complimentary.

Review: Gears of War: Judgment: Call to Arms photo
Review: Gears of War: Judgment: Call to Arms
by Jason Cabral

Since Gears of War 3, Epic Games has not been afraid to squeeze every last cent out of its customer base through premium maps and skins for characters and weapons. Don't get me wrong, I still consider the All Fronts DLC pack for Gears of War 2 to be one of the best available for any game. The amount of replay value that my friends and I got out of all of those maps was well worth the 800 Microsoft Points.

With Gears of War: Judgment's Call to Arms, however, Epic and People Can Fly are only giving us a sparse amount of new content -- for a game that already didn't have a lot of multiplayer variety to begin with.

While quantity does not always equal quality, in this case, it wouldn't have hurt to give the fans more.

Ranked: The Gears of War trailers photo
Ranked: The Gears of War trailers
by Brett Makedonski

The Gears of War franchise has a history across its four titles of releasing some of the best cinematic trailers in gaming. Despite the series' reputation of being all about impossibly muscle-bound space marines murdering everything from behind chest-high walls, the trailers mostly focus on a more human element.

Yes, as adrenaline-fueled as the games are, the videos usually seem to effectively convey the bleaker side of war. Almost always accompanied by a moving song, these trailers have a knack for making the games feel decidedly more epic.

To celebrate this week's release of Gears of War: Judgment, let's take a look back at all of the franchise's trailers.

New releases: LEGO City: Undercover gets built photo
New releases: LEGO City: Undercover gets built
by Fraser Brown

Underneath my gruff exterior beats the heart of a kid obsessed with LEGO. Even now, if I see some of those little bricks, I drop what I'm doing, and start building, ignoring whoever else is in the room. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that I'm pretty excited for LEGO City: Undercover, which drops this week along with a whole bunch of other games.

Set in an open world and story-based, it sounds like my cup of tea, especially since my favorite LEGO game has to be LEGO Batman 2. And come on, the hero is called Chaise McCain, the name I wish I was now blessed with.

Along with the tiny brick goodness, a slew of other games launch this week. Gears of War: Judgement is a thing, and will undoubtedly feature shooting and steroids; fighting giant monsters refuses to go out of style in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate; The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct appears, and still looks terrible; and the Wii U gets a Need for Speed game. All this a more falls from the skies this week.

What are you grabbing?

Review: Gears of War: Judgment photo
Review: Gears of War: Judgment
by Jim Sterling

Gears of War 3 may have seen an effective end to the war between the COG and the Locust, but in the game industry, a story isn't over until games stop selling. While Epic Games works on an inevitable sequel, it's joined up with People Can Fly to plunder the past. Yep, it's prequel time!

Cynical though I may be, my respect for the Gears of War series is such that I'm still not quite satisfied with what I have, especially following Gears 3's slightly less riveting narrative. Armed as it is with a unique style of story campaign, as well as two interesting new multiplayer modes, Judgment makes changes that some fans have found controversial.

Ultimately, however, they work surprisingly well, keeping Gears fresh and familiar all at once. Who could ask for fairer?

Gears of War: Judgment features two different campaigns photo
Gears of War: Judgment features two different campaigns
by Abel Girmay

I love Gears of War. Like many earlier adopters of the Xbox 360 (I have and love a PS3 too so don't hate), Gears of War was that first big game that made me very comfortable with my system choice. With roughly a year and half separating Gears of War: Judgment and Gears of War 3 though, I'll admit that I was firmly in that camp of Gears fans who really didn't see Judgment as necessary, and my hands on with the free for all mode at the last PAX Prime certainly wasn't winning me over.

Having spent the better part of a day with Judgment though, I am definitely warming up to it. Sure, it's not Gears of War 4 proper, but if you fancy yourself a Gears fan, then there's no reason to not open up to this one.

Valentine’s Day inspires a variety of emotions. While love is in the air for many, cupid has more sinister plans for a select few. A poor Valentine's Day for an average person might include seeing a movie alone or a solitude induced weep-fest. For the videogame characters below, the luxury of loneliness is miniature in comparison.

Take a look at ten relationships gone awry in the worst ways possible.
