Nintendo Power may be going under (Update) photo
Nintendo Power may be going under (Update)
by Holly Green

[Update 2: "Nintendo can confirm that Future US will end the production of Nintendo Power magazine with the last issue slated for December 2012," we were told by a representative of the company.]

[Update: Ars amended its article to include Twitter confirmations by Nintendo Power senior editor Chris Hoffman and writer Phil Theobald concerning the magazine's closure, but the Tweets have since been mysteriously deleted.]

A beloved, longstanding mainstay of the Nintendo gaming scene may soon be another casualty in the war between print and digital. According to an Ars Technica source, Nintendo Power is no more. Staffers were allegedly told of the closure last week, and already have been moved to other Future Publishing publications (among them GamesRadar and MacLife). The fate of the year's remaining issues, and how Nintendo Power's 475,000 subscribers will be compensated, is currently unknown.

As for the cause, the source cites the notorious difficulty in working with Nintendo, who are said to be "uninterested" in making the lucrative move to digital distribution. Neither Nintendo nor Future Publishing have commented on the closure so far, but if the source is correct and editors have already been moved to other projects, certainly some answers will be coming soon.
