The Sims 4: Aspirations and emotional traits systems shown
by Dale North

We've seen some of the key features of The Sims 4 since its announcement around this time last year.. We know, for example, how easy it is to create your character, and we've seen how they've overhauled the game's build mode. But Maxis has only briefly touched on how you'll create and develop your character's goals and emotions. We saw a bit more of how that works at a recent pre-E3 briefing.

Full details on amiibo: RPG mechanics in Smash, 3DS adapter incoming
by Dale North

Nintendo Treehouse's Bill Trinen delivered more details on  their newly announced NFC figures, amiibo, directly following their E3 streaming event. He says that a variety of games will support these figures later this year, including Super Smash Bros., Mario Party 10, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Yoshi's Wooly World, and Mario Kart 8. Nintendo says that amiibo will bring new types of fun and new ways to interact with your favorite characters.

Super Smash Bros. on Wii U will be the first game to work with the first run of amiibo characters. Remember that opening video of Super Smash Bros. Meele? Remember how the figures came to life in that opening movie? That will be a reality later this year.

Freedom Wars: Eight-person action-RPG multiplayer goodness for PS Vita photo
Freedom Wars: Eight-person action-RPG multiplayer goodness for PS Vita
by Dale North

In upcoming online Vita action RPG Freedom Wars, you are sentenced to a million years in prison. Not a typo. In fact, everyone in this messed up future world is born with a million year sentence. But you can work that sentence down by taking on missions to rescue captured civilians from an attacking alien race.

But mess up on that mission and your sentence goes back up. Actually, this world is so strict that if you run you're technically breaking the law, and that can increase your sentence.

Yep, you're kind of hunting... monsters. But that's okay, right?

Battlefield Hardline: First hands-on impressions photo
Battlefield Hardline: First hands-on impressions
by Dale North

I was pretty excited to be able to be the first to tell you about Battlefield Hardline, the new team up cops-and-robbers title from Visceral (Dead Space) and DICE. But trailer leaks, detail leaks, and even gameplay video leaks ruined the fun. I played the game several weeks ago and did my job to keep the secret! Too bad no one else did.

So you probably already know the idea behind Hardline: a sandbox that takes the mayhem of a Battlefield game but puts a crime revenge twist to it. It's a multiplayer cops and robbers game, two factions going at each other like a playable heist movie. It's as cool as it sounds.

Harmonix announces Dance Central Spotlight, a digital-only Xbox One exclusive photo
Harmonix announces Dance Central Spotlight, a digital-only Xbox One exclusive
by Dale North

Dance Central Spotlight is a new Xbox One Kinect dancing title. The idea is to keep the focus on dancing and music, serving as a sort of follow-up to the hit Xbox 360 title Dance Central.

The difference here is that Spotlight is a smaller package, coming with only 10 songs, and released as a download-only title. Harmonix plans to launch with a DLC library of at least 50 tracks, and says that they'll follow with weekly DLC for a time after that. They have improved their authoring pipeline, letting them create song content more quickly.

You'll get more out of each song now, too. With Kinect 2.0's improved skeleton tracking, they can do more with each song. So now, instead of three routines, you'll get eight: four core (easy to difficult) routines, strength and training routines, and finally both easy and difficult choreography routines.

And here's some great news: Legacy DLC will be supported. If you've ever purchased DLC for Dance Central, you'll get the Spotlight version for free when it is released, complete with the 8 routines.

Destructoid's definitive guide to E3 2014 photo
Destructoid's definitive guide to E3 2014
by Dale North

E3 2014 begins next week. Destructoid has its bags packed, ready to attack the press conferences and show floor.  This year should bring us what we really wanted last year: games for our next-gen consoles. Sony and Microsoft have had time to work up some new things for us since their respective console launches, and Nintendo is running at full steam for its systems. Some of big third-party publishers have had enough time to finally show off what they've been working on.

And this is not counting all of the PC games, indie games, portable offerings, VR dueling (Oculus vs. Project Morpheus), and other new announcements coming. It should be good.

But we hope E3 2014 isn't a huge tease. While we're sure to get some new games for fall 2014, who's to say that the rest of them won't be hanging back to 2015? With all of the recently delayed titles that were supposed to launch this year moving to next, anything is possible.

If nothing else, we'll at least get some exciting software announcements next week. You were heard last year, gamers -- loud and clear. The big three know for sure that you don't want to hear about hardware and entertainment features during your press conferences. It's going to be all about games. Lots of games.

Our guide will set you up for Destructoid's E3 Unfiltered coverage next week. First, we'll lay out what you should know to catch you up. Then we'll list out times for press conferences and other events. Finally, we'll run down the list of top companies and tell you what you should expect.

Fantasia: Music Evolved introduces partner apprentice Scout photo
Fantasia: Music Evolved introduces partner apprentice Scout
by Dale North

Harmonix has thought a lot about how they'll welcome players to Fantasia: Music Evolved and they've decided to add a partner apprentice that will serve as a sort of game guide. Her name is Scout, a talented but impatient apprentice that works alongside the player to fight the force called the Noise.

Scout is fully voiced and animated, and appears as the game begins to help kick off the story. She seems to have a lively personality, wearing a star-covered ball cap and street clothes. Players will cooperate with Scout to save Fantasia.
