Review: Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures photo
Review: Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures
by Tony Ponce

For years, James "Angry Video Game Nerd" Rolfe has suffered the worst that retro gaming could toss at him for the sake of your amusement. Why does he do it? Is he a masochist? Does the rage that burns inside with every sudden death and game-breaking bug fill him with purpose? Why does the pain give him so much power?

To know the Nerd, you have to become the Nerd. You can't just film yourself playing any ol' NES game, spout a few curse words, post the poorly edited footage onto YouTube, then call it a day. It's not that simple. No, we must dive into the deepest corners of his psyche.

There was once a Z-grade movie of sinister renown called MANOS: The Hands of Fate, which was recently translated into videogame form by FreakZone Games. AVGN show partner ScrewAttack knew that the only way to do a Nerd game justice would be to assign development to a team with experience making palatable the most unpalatable of media dreck. Only by folding pain over pleasure could we truly begin to understand.

Can I talk about DuckTales Remastered for a minute?

I'm not going to cite any specific examples, but I've read more than a handful of reviews that knocked Remastered down for being a bit too "classic" in the difficulty department. Some people had such a rough time that it actually soured their opinion of the original -- I guess DuckTales was just more flawed than we dared to admit, and it took this remake to finally bring the truth to light.

I am very disappointed in those people.

It's f*cking DuckTales, one of the easier games in the NES library! Are you so spoiled by modern design leniency that you spout tired labels like "cheap" and "unfair" whenever a game punishes you for your failure to learn and adapt? Or is it that you'll only accept above-average challenge when offset by a safety net -- like checkpoints seemingly every two steps -- to spare you the horror of having to exercise caution and restraint? Heaven forbid a game asks you to plan ahead before plunging headlong into uncharted territory.

If that's you, you need to play Volgarr the Viking and gain some goddamn perspective.

Mario SpaghettiOs!? Are we back in the 80s!?

I thought this was a joke. It's not a joke. Campbell's has partnered with Nintendo to release Mario-branded SpaghettiOs. Why, yes, it is the year 2013. Back in the late 80s and early 90s, you couldn't toss a penny down a supe...

Inti Creates contributing art to both new Shantae games

We all owe WayForward an apology. We haven't been paying the Kickstarter for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero much attention because Mighty No. 9 gobbled up everyone's focus. I knew weeks in advance that WayForward was planning to la...

Mighty No. 9 now OFFICIALLY coming to PS3, 360, and Wii U
by Tony Ponce

You better believe I've had my eyeballs on the Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter like a vulture. I wanted to spread the news as soon as the console port goal was finally cleared.

That's right! Mere minutes ago, the donation amount crossed the $2,200,000 threshold, ensuring that comcept and Inti Creates will put Mighty No. 9 on PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. I always knew this stretch goal would be met, but I didn't think it would happen with a full two weeks left to go before the Kickstarter closes. I don't know if it'll be able to hit the $3,300,000 mark required for the PS4 and Xbox One ports, but never count out the massive influx of funds that typically pour in the last couple of days of a crowdfunding campaign.

By the way, have you guys seen Mighty No. 3's design yet? Isn't she just the most adorable Japanese thunder god?
