Earthworm Jim 2 scares me to this day photo
Earthworm Jim 2 scares me to this day
by Jordan Devore

Leading up to Halloween, I've been wanting to write about horror games because that's what you do in October, right? I still might; I'm playing the oft-recommended Fatal Frame II for the first time now and am planning to revisit Condemned. But before I get to those, I have been thinking about games that aren't traditionally deemed scary that managed to get to me anyway.

My mind jumps back to Shiny Entertainment's classic action-platformer Earthworm Jim 2. What a surreal game. It went places you wouldn't expect even if you had played its predecessor or were otherwise familiar with characters like Professor Monkey-for-a-Head and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt.

This was a game willing to dress you up like a blind cave salamander and force you to flap around villi-filled intestines to the tune of "Moonlight Sonata" for a single level. And god forbid you bounce off one of those mischievous pinball bumpers (whose intestines are these?) -- the ensuing scream was horrific. But The Villi People isn't the level that prompted this article.

That distinction belongs to Puppy Love, a stage whose title alone strikes fear into my heart.

GameStop is giving out Diancie for Pokémon X and Y photo
GameStop is giving out Diancie for Pokémon X and Y
by Jordan Devore

Shiny Gengar is no more (hope you got yours!) but another distribution event for Pokémon X and Y has taken its place. Today through November 16 at GameStop, you'll be able to score a free code for the Legendary Rock/Fairy-type Pokémon Diancie.

Once Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are released on November 21, you'll then be able to bring your Diancie to a Pokémon Center in either game to obtain the Diancite Mega Stone necessary for its Mega Evolution. What's the new form look like? Less ... chunky.

Oh, so that's how PlayStation 4 Share Play works

I had a general idea of what Share Play for PlayStation 4 was but this video summarizes the feature well. The main draw is that with a PlayStation Plus membership, you can share a game with a friend, for an hour at a time, a...

Life is beautiful: Deadly Premonition for PC discounted to $2.49

Word has gotten out about Swery65's cult classic Deadly Premonition in the years since Jim Sterling's memorable review, but there are many people who wrote it off or otherwise missed out. This might help. Rising Star Games ha...

Nintendo has kids explain amiibo figures in Super Smash Bros.

I made it to the closeup of Mario's face, roughly a minute in, before deciding that I needed to share this ridiculous video in which a boy buys an amiibo for Super Smash Bros. to impress a girl. Kyle says it's the worst thin...

I'm happy a game like Shelter 2 can exist

Badgers were cute in Shelter, but I prefer the lynxes of Shelter 2 -- still adorable and higher up on the food chain. This is a survival game in which you begin as a pregnant lynx, a first for the medium, I'm sure. You'll ma...

Meaty turn-based RPG Pier Solar HD hits Wii U in November

WaterMelon's homebrew project Pier Solar and the Great Architects pushed the Sega Genesis to its limits as a new release in 2010 (!) which I thought was courageous, at the time. Still do. The game shipped on an actual cartrid...

Dress up like the bad guy in this free Shadow of Mordor DLC photo
Dress up like the bad guy in this free Shadow of Mordor DLC
by Jordan Devore

Monolith has released a free Power of Shadow DLC pack for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Most notably, it includes an alternate costume for Talion that resembles the Black Hand of Sauron. Epic Runes are included as well:

  • One with Nature – Immunity to Poison attacks from Uruk Captains or Ghuls.
  • Ascendant – Double Focus Time for slow motion Ranged combat.
  • Elven Grace – Increased defense which halves the damage of enemy strikes.

More clothing options are good if, like Steven, you want to live out matchmaking fantasies or, similar to Nic, you want to become the Dracula of Middle-earth. (I love these guys.)

I'm holding off on Shadow of Mordor until the holiday break, I think. This seems like something I'll want to dig into for a week straight and never touch again. Ever do that?
