There's a Pacific Rim virtual-reality experience for Oculus Rift

Legendary Pictures and Reel FX brought a Pacific Rim virtual-reality experience to San Diego Comic-Con last weekend and gee, doesn't that seems like a worthwhile idea for a full game? Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot puts players i...

Heads up: Payday will be free on Steam in October photo
Heads up: Payday will be free on Steam in October
by Jordan Devore

It feels silly to tell you about a game that's going to be free months from now, but maybe, just this once, it'll prevent someone from buying said game right before the promotion begins. With that in mind, Payday: The Heist will be free for 24 hours on October 18, 2014.

This offer is connected to Overkill Software's Crimefest, a celebration of the Payday franchise's third anniversary happening in October. The studio has a goal of 1.5 million community member sign-ups on the Payday 2 Steam group, and there are milestones with rewards. The group now has over 1,050,000 members, hence the free Payday offer.

Even if you're done with the original game, I'd encourage Payday 2 players to take a look at that link -- the other rewards will be relevant to your interests. Looks like we'll get them all, too.

August Games with Gold: Dishonored, Crimson Dragon, more photo
August Games with Gold: Dishonored, Crimson Dragon, more
by Jordan Devore

Microsoft has come out with its August lineup of free games for Xbox Live Gold members and the highlight here is unquestionably Arkane Studios' stealth title Dishonored. You'll want to clear hard drive space for it in a couple weeks. But, that's not the only one worth trying.

The first Games with Gold selections -- Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero on Xbox One, and Motorcross Madness on Xbox 360 -- will be free beginning this Friday, August 1. Then, it's Dishonored's turn from August 16 - 31. We'll have a reminder post when the time comes.

One of the recurring complaints for Games with Gold has been its insistence on featuring stuff that many of us own and have owned for years. With Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero next month, at least we're getting something I imagine not a ton of folks have played yet.

EVO's best moments are often found off-screen

As someone who watches EVO but hasn't yet and will likely never attend the fighting game tournament in person, I adore Richard Li's videos -- they truly bring out the human element of the competition. It occasionally comes t...

Modified 3DS hardware created for Twitch Plays Pokémon X

It was slightly surprising to hear that the Twitch Plays Pokémon community is still active if for no other reason than I thought folks would have beaten all of the games by now. Not quite! There's still Pokémon ...

Ubisoft is sending someone to Mt. Everest to play Far Cry 4

I want to play Far Cry 4 and, yeah, scaling a mountain like Everest would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip -- but playing Far Cry 4 *on* Mt. Everest? Not for me, sadly. That said, someone out there -- the one lucky person chosen...

Crawl is back with a new release date and an 'IRS MAN' monster

I absolutely loved the way Powerhoof handled its delay of Crawl due to some untimely tax issues that needed to be resolved before the game was released. The studio wasn't sure how long it would take to get back on track, but...

Hardline 26: Do we even want another Last of Us? photo
Hardline 26: Do we even want another Last of Us?
by Jordan Devore

Electronic Arts has delayed not one but two of its major games originally planned for October 2014 -- Dragon Age: Inquisition is being held back until November, while Battlefield Hardline is now set for early 2015. In this week's episode of Hardline, Steven, Brett, and Bill joined me to discuss that decision, the Destiny beta, and Naughty Dog's comments about how not considering a sequel to The Last of Us "would be a disservice [to the studio and its fans]."

We purposefully went for a shorter run time this week in the hopes that the show would be more easily digestible for those of you watching on YouTube (as opposed to just listening). Actually, we tried to do that last episode too, but it ended up being well over 30 minutes anyway. Whoops.

We did it this time, though. Hope you enjoy!

For the audio-only episode, you can subscribe on iTunes and RSS or download directly.
