Inafune: A new 16-bit Mega Man game is 'a great idea' photo

Due to the ridiculously awesome nature of this news, I'm going to skip the pleasantries and jump right to it: Thanks to the success of Mega Man 9, a new Mega Man game presented in good ol' 16-bit fashion seems like a possibility.

"Reviving the 16-bit game style in the series seems like a great idea," says Keiji Inafune in response to a fan-submitted question. "We certainly would like to consider trying it out in future when there’s a chance."

Having spent the vast majority of my childhood playing a Super Nintendo -- and continuing to do so well into my adult life on a near-weekly basis -- these are the words I've been desperately waiting for Capcom to say ever since we got wind that Mega Man 9 would be a throwback.

I think I speak for just about all of us when I say, Capcom, make us a new game in the Mega Man X series.

That is indeed a great idea. Square Enix, Nintendo, are you listening?

Is it wrong that everything Inafune says gives me hope instead of cautious optimism?

Mega Man X was my favorite MM series, so seeing more in any shape or form would make me break out the wallet. I liked what they did with the PSP port, seeing something like that for HD consoles would be very nice.

I was wondering why they didn't pump out a "Mega Man X9," but I guess that will be happening soon...Or wait, did they only ever get up to 7? I don't know, the X series really blows after 3.

Because I was an SNES kid, I am terribly biased towards 16-bit stuff. Lovely.

I'm agreeing with The-Excel and Monodi. Mega Man X and Super Mario RPG are perhaps my favorite childhood games.

What i found really interesting from the Q&A RE: the old Robot Master Contests

"But we want to bring it back in near future if an opportunity arises. What I hope to do with the Robot Master Contest is to create Mega Man together with all the fans."

Imagine creating your own Robot Master from a robust Boss creation template. With elemental assignments to attacks. Think City of Heroes/Villians character creation for SNES MegaMan style enemies. Your boss would appear randomly in the games of people on your friend list at the end of corresponding elemental levels. Want. ability. to create. this!

I was very depressed today and then I seen this! I could use some more PEW-PEW in my veins... if they want to fulfill my childhood dreams anyway.

Though I must say, I'm only depressed because of my games-I-have-not-opened to bleeding-with-fingerprints game ratio. So I have some time to wait for this. If it does come out eventually, it will be a day one purchase for me, mainly because I know it won't be very pricey.

Long live Mega Man!

I like Mega-Mens. All of them. Even the ones people think are shitty. Nostalgia, especially where the Blue Bomber is concerned, can carry a shitty game all the way across the finish line, IMHO.

This news is very, very exciting!

MegaMan X4 was pretty good, to be fair. I loved the way it kept the same gameplay but upped the graphical quality, and it had some pretty amazing environments. It's a shame that most people only remember it for "AAWHAT ARE WE FIGHTING FFFFFOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRR"

Jordan Devore: Nothing wrong with X4 and X5. They aren't great games but I still found the enjoyable. You should at least watch some of the cutscenes from X4 to experience the horrible voice acting. But I won't even attempt to defend anything past X5.

MMX is my favorite of the series, but seriously, Capcom? The amount of bits your graphics have have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the quality of your game. Just stop this bullshitting and make a nice, pretty new HD sprites/vector art/whatever with old 2D Mega Man gameplay. It's not like you don't have the budget for it after how much you raked in with MM9.

While I never really played Mega Man when I was younger I would love to see more 16-bit style games get made. Maybe if a new 16-bit Mega Man game gets released and does well other publishers will follow suit?

Konami's been rocking the 16bit-ish style for the last ear or so of re-makesand retro revivals on WiiWare, Contra, Gradius and Castlevania all have some new entries 16bit style.

Also, Blaster Master for WiiWare kinda fits that bill, I gather.

Mega Man X just gets really repetitive after 3. I'll give you that 4 isn't the worst thing ever, but it's not really different enough to warrant a playthrough. The rest of the series gets way too heavy handed with story and anime references that it forgets what Mega Man X is even about and just...sucks, for lack of better words.

This is interesting news.

Also, Storm Eagle's theme never really stuck to me that much. At least not as much as Armored Armadillo's theme, now that's something I can't get out of my head.

Since MM9 came out I thought it would be great if the did MMX9 in 16bit SNES graphic-style and throw it back to the gameplay MMX1 had! No multiple armors, no rescuing stupid characters for crappy pseudo-habilities and no, please NO AXL!

Dammit, this story is making me want to pop in Mega Man X Collection again. I've got enough games to play as is! Damn you all to hell for being awesome, Mega Man!

Also, Tubatic, that, if was was technically feasible, would be an awesome idea. Though I fear many friendships would be destroyed because they kept being destroyed by more...phallic bosses.

I think the X series should be semi-rebooted and everything from 4 onwards should be written out of continuity.
