In the land of the Rising Sun, slim PSPs sell faster than black market babies

     DO WANT

Square-Enix and their detemination to take over the universe have struck again. Since the launch of the limited slim PSP bundled with Crisis Core on September 13th on Japan, 75,943 units have been sold. Add in the 250,702 units sold after the full launch of the handheld on September 20th, and numbers are looking pretty. Not bad for less than two weeks of sales.

Worldwide sales of the little black handheld are believed to be over 25 million, which is astonishing considering previous to E3 the general consensus seemed to be that the PSP was best used as a handsome paperweight. Seems like the slim might have been the push Sony needed. Now reprice those PS3's, and we might have a revolution on our hands.

[Via GamesIndustry.biz, thanks Donut!]

Update - Per the illustrious Dale North, during his recent trip to Japan for the Tokyo Game Show you couldn't blink an eye without seeing someone playing their Crisis Core PSP or staring at an advertisement for it. We're talking one CC PSP for each hand here, people.

Yeah, but you could put the FF7:Crisis Core logo on a paper bag filled with dog crap and they'd still buy it.

@ WiiSucks: Remember that Dtoid is uber cool, are always on the edge so they dont show any respect for those kinds of things. Ever. That would make dents to their "unique style".

But back on topic,

Japan is, thankfully, not the whole world. And anything branded Final Fantasy will sell. But again remember that the new PSP Slim has been hacked as well (actually the next day of release) and allow "illegal activity" within it.

For some reason, I love that image, lol

Anyways... the new slim PSPs have me interested in getting one... down the road. I even looked over the list of games that are out (or are coming in the near future) and was quite surprised at the number of games I was interested in. It was drastically higher than I was expecting. Still the short battery life is still a big turn off for me, but I guess thats what you get for the extra power/performance the system has

Now that they've been out for a little while, does anyone that has a new slim psp still think it feels cheap (umd drive, etc) and have there been any problems with those parts breaking?

Nothing could make me want a PSP (again). I sold mine to get my Xbox 360 and I couldn't be happier. Handheld gaming has not interested me since the GameBoy days. I prefer the video and aural presentation befitting of a proper console game. Best of luck to Sony on the endeavor, though.

the new psp slim is awesome. Great screen, half the loading times, lighter than a DS lite... I love it

After getting tired of the genre and rating rutt of the DS I bought a PSPslim and love it. They have games for kids and hardcores for the dads. Its like having a last gen console in your hands. The intergration with multimedia and my ps3 is awesome. The daxter bundle is a hot deal. Just because something is popular doesnt mean its the way to go, ie the ds. So its popular. 90% of the titles are kiddie, disney or wierd anime titles. Thats ok if thats your deal but I need more. PSP has some hotness MGS ops, Ratchet and Clank,Tekken, Syphon Filter, Silent Hill, FF crisis core, Star wars,-so I sold my ds lite on craigslist for 100 bucks and bought the daxter pack. I will use my wifes ds for the one or two games a yr that are worth playing.

If you guys are fans of FF7, then i suggest whole heartedly that when Crisis Core comes out you try it. Square has not made a game this good in awhile, it's truly an amazing game. It may even make sone of ya cry... I bet Colette would love it.

SUZU! <3 Forget about FF, I want to see a Nagasarete Airantou game. Let's go Squenix, make a harem game where I gain love points by giving Suzu all the mame daifuku on the island. I'd by a PSP(lite) just for that game. /not really

Colette, while I was there last time, I saw no black children being sold on the market, only young women for sushi bars. I believe you need to recheck your sources.

And everything BHZ said. And if they release that Crisis Core spec. ed. version here, I'll be taking the short bus ride to getting one.

That is all.

I saw an import of Sexy Parodius for $9 at the local electronics store... Urge to buy PSP... Rising... Hell, I might even trade the DS for it.

What's awesome about Japan and FF: PSPs sell through the roof because CC comes out. DS Lites will sell through the roof when FFIV comes out. If it's FF, they will come.

I wonder if the Dragon Quest 4 DS remake will bank as much as this. I've read that DQ has a larger fanbase in Japan than FF does.

DQ does have a larger base than FF. Anyone thinking that this small rift will cause the DS to topple is sadly mistaken.

The TGS is highly populated with PSP's because Sony is the only Japanese console maker at the show. Nintendo shuns TGS, so the DS' stay at home, and the PSP's get to come out. The timing of Crisis Core's release and the new Slim was a trifecta.

That said, I still have no interest in getting another PSP. I already had one. Gathered a lot of dust when it wasn't playing Lumines. It's sexy as hell looking, but there weren't any games that I wanted to play. Still really aren't other than maybe FFII. DS STILL has games I don't even have time for. And Zelda comes out next month too.

I may get a PSP light at some point, as it would be nice to have one for emu games and another for PSP games. Sure, PSP light was always gonna sell with FF slapped on it, like bad make up (but good game). Japanese love FF, and its this same philosophy that Sony have in mind for PS3. FFXIII may not make it to the market in time, though.

DS is still king with the better and more varied games. Its easy to see everything as what you say Gamesaregames. Perhaps you weren't looking in the right place for the best games, I don't know (some of the best stuff is on import).

I have both DS and PSP and enjoy the best of both. Both are worth owning. I don't see why it has to be one or the other (as both are fairly cheap now) but that's up to you all.

The psp slim looks awesome. It fixes my biggest issue with the DS. It lets me play on a TV set at home. It may have even made umd movies not seem like a total waste of time.

But I don't see my self getting one. I already have a DS and a PS3. I'd rather spend my cash on getting games instead of just buying new systems.

The PSP actually IS popular. It's just that the DS is MORE popular by a lot. I think it even has more million selling 3rd party games than the DS. That may have changed recently.

The cables to actually play it on TV aren't released here in the UK and don't look like they will be. Without a release date on that the best feature the new PSP has. It's really doomed the same death as the UMD movie collection in the UK. Really, theres fuck all to play on the thing that makes me even want to attempt a purchase.

They cant even give away UMD's at the moment!
